2 LIVING OUR FAITH Dear Friends, Last week you were very generous to the Carmelite Mission collection and on behalf of the Carmelite Order I want to say a PROFOUND THANK YOU. The collection amounted to more than $7200. This will help our province support Carmelite missionaries, both nuns and priests, in some of the most troubled regions of the world including countries in Africa, as well as Indonesia, East Timor, Philippines, Peru, El Salvador, and Vietnam. Some of our friars are secretly living and teaching the Gospel in Communist China and Cambodia. There are also several houses of cloistered Carmelite sisters living and praying for you in some of these troubled spots. St. Therese of Lisieux (the Little Flower) requested to be allowed to leave her cloistered convent in France and live in Vietnam. She was refused because of her poor health. So she dedicated her life to prayer for the missionaries whom she longed to join. Today she is not only our Carmelite sister and a Doctor of the Church, but the patroness of missionaries around the world. Supporting Victims of Typhoon Haiyan - Bishop Frank J. Dewane expresses his gratitude for the generosity shown for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and Vietnam. As of this time, the Diocese of Venice has received more than $602, The money received has been sent to Catholic Relief Services which has been responding shelter, emergency household supplies, water, sanitation, hygiene and clearing debris. Thank you for your support of our Brothers and Sisters in need in the Philippines and Vietnam who are working to rebuild their lives. The Diocese of Venice continues to accept donations for Typhoon Haiyan Relief. Celebration of Marriage Anniversaries - Bishop Frank J. Dewane will celebrate Mass for married couples celebrating milestone anniversaries (25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 50+ years). The Masses will be celebrated on Saturday, February 15, at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice at 11:00AM. You can make reservations at the front office at any time. Flu precautions - With the flu season in full swing, all Diocese of Venice parishes/missions/chapels are being asked to take extra precautions to help mitigate the spread and effects of the flu. Regarding the Precious Blood, at this point individuals have the choice as to whether or not they are comfortable receiving the Precious Blood. Ministers of Holy Communion should be especially mindful of the need to practice good hygiene. All Ministers of Holy Communion should purify their hands in the sacristy before distributing communion and again after Mass. The Bishop has asked me to inform all parishioners that they are excused from attending Mass on a Sunday if you are feeling ill. This is both an act of conscience on your part discerning how serious your illness is, and an act of charity to those who you might infect if you come. All homebound faithful in Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte counties are able to view the Mass at 10:00AM Sunday mornings on the ION Television Network. Blessings, Fr. 4 LIVING OUR FAITH ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE TO IMMOKALEE MEETING FOR DRIVERS, HELPERS AND ALL WISHING TO VOLUNTEER The Annual Food Drive to Immokalee meeting will be on February 5, 2014 at 6:30PM in Café Carmel. A light buffet will be served while we plan the driving and helpers schedule for the coming year. Thank you all for being part of this much needed and appreciated ministry. If you are not able to attend and would like to sign up to drive a particular month or have any questions please call Jo Kilgallon at We would appreciate it if you would RSVP to Jo Kilgallon so we can plan the buffet. If you have not been a driver or helper and would like to become one, please attend the meeting. EUCHARISTIC MINISTER MEETING Our annual meeting for all active Eucharist Ministers is scheduled for Monday February 17th at 1PM and/or Monday February 24th at 5PM. Anyone interested in becoming a Eucharistic Minister is also welcome and encouraged to attend. Due to the many changes, attendance is required for all those who wish to continue to be scheduled to serve. Books of Interest Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World (Random House, 2003) The book is a biographical work by American writer Tracy Kidder that traces the life of physician and anthropologist Paul Farmer with particular focus on his work fighting tuberculosis in Haiti, Peru, and Russia. Kidder first met Dr. Paul Farmer in Haiti in At the time, Kidder was researching a story about American soldiers sent to reinstate Haiti's democratically elected government led by president Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Kidder again met Farmer on his flight back to Miami from Haiti and began to learn small pieces of Farmer's life. Farmer was born in Massachusetts and grew up as one of six children in a poor household in Florida, going on to attend Duke and Harvard, where he earned his M.D and Ph.D. The book details Farmer's inspiring life and accomplishments, including Farmer's work with the health and social justice organization Partners in Health, especially in Haiti, Peru, and Russia. Who is My Neighbor? On the White Earth reservation in northern Minnesota, the Ojibwe people grow and produce traditional native foods such as maple syrup, wild rice, hominy, wild fruits and herbal teas. Native Harvest, the marketing program for White Earth, provides jobs for tribal members and promotes traditional foods. Income generated from sales helps to fund the White Earth Land Recovery Program. In addition to raising funds to buy back original lands, the White Earth programs also work to preserve cultural practices, encourage sound land stewardship and promote sustainable development of their community. These beautiful shawls are easy to make and greatly appreciated by the receiver. Work on them at home and at your own pace. If you have not yet participated in our Shawl Ministry, please come and find out more about this beautiful and rewarding program. If you know someone who is ill, homebound, having surgery, in a nursing home or assisted living, has lost a loved one recently, or anyone who could use a warm loving embrace, please let us know. The origins of Elizabeth Lange are uncertain. Most likely she was an emancipated Haitian slave who came to the United States in 1791 and settled in Baltimore. Observing that there was no public education available for black children in the city, Elizabeth opened a school in her own home. Later, with the support of the Sulpician Fathers, she established an academy for black girls. Since no religious congregations at the time accepted black women, Elizabeth founded her own congregation the Oblate Sisters of Providence. Eventually the Sisters opened an orphanage and a home for elderly widows, and they nursed the sick during an outbreak of cholera. This was the beginning of a legacy that has thrived in the United States, Cuba, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Africa. Paul (originally called Saul) was a Pharisee living in Jerusalem. On his way to Damascus to continue his mission of stamping out converts to the new Jewish sect of Christians, he experienced a vision of Jesus. From then on, he proclaimed the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ wherever he went. Paul also wrote a large part of the New Testament. This series retraces the apostle's famed journey of faith, primarily through present-day Israel, Syria, Turkey, and Greece. Paul walked roads built by the Romans, where there was constant danger of bandits. Neither was travel by sea safe or comfortable. Because there were no cabins for travelers, they had to find a place on the deck exposed to sun, winds, and rain. Paul s trade as a tentmaker probably held him in good stead, as he could fashion shelter for himself and his companions on deck.
