Though a lot of a en on is given to shepherds, I wonder what is expected of the sheep and what responsibility is expected of us who profess to follow the Good Shepherd.

2 ODINARY TIME Let s Talk About Sheep Daniel P. Horan, OFM, Give Us This Day, July 2018 The prophet Jeremiah reminds us that one of God s key a ributes is jus ce. So central is this aspect of our understanding of divine ac on and inten on that jus ce is a fi ng divine name. God wants leaders to model themselves in the pa ern of divine jus ce. And God promises to raise up such leaders. Jesus regularly draws on this prophe c imagery, famously referring to himself as the Good Shepherd while calling out unjust and merciless religious leaders in his me for being bad or unjust shepherds. Though a lot of a en on is given to shepherds, I wonder what is expected of the sheep and what responsibility is expected of us who profess to follow the Good Shepherd. In other words, let s talk about sheep. Too o en we dismiss ourselves as just sheep, as unimportant followers of the more important shepherd. But rather than considering ourselves as merely dispensable lemmings, that is, just sheep, maybe we need to think of our voca on to be just sheep those called to exemplify the jus ce demonstrated by our one, true Shepherd. To overlook our call as followers of Christ is to act as sheep without a shepherd. But having been bap zed into the life, death, and resurrec on of Christ, we can walk confidently into the future, embracing our iden ty as images of the God of jus ce. In this way, we demonstrate that not only does God promise to raise up leaders, but God also promises to raise up just sheep. Daniel P. Series on the Prophets Part 3 Micah: New Hope (and Some Serious Puns) Irene Nowell, OSB, Give Us This Day, July 2018 The prophet Micah is a puzzlement. Tradi onally the prophet has been thought of as an eighth-century contemporary of Isaiah, prophesying in the country villages while Isaiah prophesied in the city of Jerusalem. More recent scholarship, however, places his book in the Persian period, two or more centuries later. The message of Micah, however, is valid for all me. A er an ini al accusa on and an announcement that the prophet will go barefoot and naked in order to get the a en on of the people, Micah launches into a series of puns. If the content were not so serious, the puns would be deligh ully amusing. It is as if the prophet were saying: Those who live in Flint, Michigan, strike fire. Residents of What Cheer, Iowa, rejoice. Folks in Peculiar, Missouri, are somehow odder than the rest of us. But Micah is not trying to entertain. He is warning the people that even their city names are a warning: Ci zens of Maroth (bi er) should not hope for good (Mic 1:12). People of Achzib (decep on) should not expect true news (1:14). Perhaps the most familiar passage from Micah is the trial scene (6:1-8). God summons the people to court and declares a case against them. The witnesses have been called: the mountains and the hills. The accusa on has already been laid out in a previous chapter: The wealthy have used their power to gather up all the arable land and to cheat the poor out of what li le they have. The Lord warns the rich that they themselves will lose their property (2:1-5). At the trial itself, however, God does not accuse the wealthy in anger but rather laments that he has lost their love. God cannot let go of these precious people! What response do the people give? They are s ll focused on material goods. They offer all their riches, even their firstborn sons. But that is not what God wants. God wants their hearts: do jus ce, love goodness, walk humbly with me (6:8). It is too easy to give God things; what God really wants is uncondi onal love.

(no. 23) May you come to realize what that word is, the message of Jesus that God wants to speak to the world by your life. Let yourself be transformed. Let yourself be renewed by the Spirit, so that this can happen, lest you fail in your precious mission. The Lord will bring it to fulfillment despite your mistakes, and missteps, provided that you do not abandon the path of love but remain ever open to his supernatural grace, which purifies and enlightens. Witnesses for Our Time Servant of God Jacques Hamel Priest ( ) He is remembered on July 26. Father Hamel gave his life for us, he gave his life to not deny Jesus. He gave his life in the same sacrifice of Jesus on the altar, and from there he accused the author of the persecu on: Go away Satan! Pope Francis Fr. Jacques Hamel was saying Mass in the parish of Saint- É enne-du-rouvray in Normandy when two men armed with knives charged toward the altar. Fr. Hamel barely had me to rebuke them with the words, Be gone, Satan! before they proceeded to slit his throat. The a ackers, who claimed allegiance to the Islamic State, were shot as they le the church. Fr. Hamel, who was eighty-five, died immediately. This event sent shock waves throughout France and beyond. Muslims across France a ended Mass to show their solidarity. Fr. Hamel, as it turned out, had been a close friend of the local Imam, with whom he had organized interfaith dialogue sessions. But otherwise he was a quite ordinary priest, who loved his flock, and had happily con nued his ministry ten years past the age of re rement. I will work un l my last breath, he had said. There were immediate calls for Fr. Hamel s canoniza on, and Pope Francis waived the usual five-year wai ng period to introduce his cause. During a memorial Mass at the Va can, the pope referred to him as a martyr part of a chain of martyrs. He par cularly noted that Fr. Hamel, in his last moments, had the clarity to iden fy and rebuke the spirit of Satan. He remarked, How good it would be if all religious confessions would say: To kill in the name of God is satanic. Share the Journey Continues The Diocese of Venice continues to promote Share the Journey, a worldwide two-year initiative of Our Holy Father. Last in the series Are Refugees a Burden? 1. 6 YOUTH CORNER A Message for Parents How To Find Refreshment in the Middle of Summer Sarah Bragg, Think back to what summer was like before you had kids. Do you remember the glory of it? The late start to the day. Creating your own schedule. Taking actual vacations? (Because let s be honest, a day at the beach with kids is not really a vacation.) Summers used to be about recharging. Taking time off from the daily grind in order to come back refreshed. I think the people who need refreshment the most are parents, yet it s sometimes most difficult for parents to find it. Instead, you find yourself just trying to hold on to your sanity as you try to figure out how to entertain your kids now that they re out of school. You become a constant referee in sibling warfare and get lost in a never-ending state of laundry (how do they wear so many clothes)? And if you hear the theme song to a Disney show one more time, you may lock yourself in a closet. As parents, you have less of most things time, money and ability. But just because you have less time, money and ability to find refreshment like you once did before kids doesn t mean that you shouldn t try. Summer comes and goes quickly. And much like a hurricane, your emotional, spiritual and relational state of being can be tossed around and left in a state of destruction by the time school starts again. That s why it s important to think about how to safeguard your soul for the storms of summer. Think about one thing you can do in the coming days and weeks left of summer to help refresh yourself. It s easy to talk about needing to be refreshed, but it s difficult to actually do something about it. Daily Think about what you enjoy doing that doesn t cost you anything. Maybe it s drinking a cup of coffee in the morning all by yourself. Or maybe it s having your favorite drink on the patio at night under the twinkle lights at night. Or maybe it s taking 15 minutes to sit outside to soak up the sun. It s important to do something every day that refreshes you. Weekly Think about what you enjoy doing that doesn t cost much. Maybe enlist the help of your spouse or friend or sitter for an hour or two. Maybe you could go to Target alone or to Starbucks. Or maybe it s taking a walk on a local trail or greenway. This shouldn t cost much. You would be surprised at how much $5 at Starbucks can bring a sense of refreshment. Monthly Think about what you enjoy doing that costs a little bit more time and money. Maybe you go to your favorite restaurant. Or maybe you even book a hotel for a night or a spa treatment. For us, date night doesn t happen weekly but instead monthly. Having that on the calendar gives me something to look forward to. And I always come back home feeling refreshed. Not only is it good for your emotional, relational and spiritual well being to take care of yourself, but it s good for your kids to see you care for yourself. You aren t the only busy people in your family. Your kids are busier than you were at their age. Model for them what it means to take care of yourself. Let them see you relax. Let them see you enjoy refreshment. Let them see you prioritize time away with your spouse so that they will learn to find ways to be refreshed.
