2 ORDINARY TIME The Preaching of St. John the Bap st by Pieter Bruegel the Elder A Tipping Point Richard Reece, Give Us This Day, June 2018 The birth of John the Bap st is, to the story of our salva on, what best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell might have called a pping point : a drama c moment... when everything can change all at once. Today s readings all of them prac cally shout, Pay a en on! A new thing is happening! The Lord has spoken, Isaiah prophesies, that a er many trials Israel may be gathered to him and its salva on may reach to the ends of the earth. Paul, a er recoun ng the old history of the Israelites, proclaims the new one: a savior, Jesus, has come, heralded by John. And the newborn John becomes a symbol for the moment when everything will change: his name John, not Zechariah represents a break with the past, and his father s acceptance unlocks the old man s lips that he may bless God. When John is grown, he will preach a bap sm of repentance, urging those who hear him to turn away from the past, to start over. John s des ny, and ours, is to be a light, to go before the Lord to prepare his way. Because through us the tender compassion of our God shines on those who sit in darkness. Can I be like John, a servant through whom God s glory shows? To be a light unto the na ons is probably more than I can do. But perhaps I do know someone who sits in darkness, who needs John s comfor ng message: You can start over. Turn toward the light. A new thing is happening! Richard Reece is a writer and re red magazine editor. He is former editor-in-chief of Catholic Digest magazine and of NC Catholics, the magazine for the Diocese of Raleigh. De La Tour, Le Nain, and 17 th -Century Pain ng We re going to begin now in the 17 th century, in Le Grand Siècle as it s called in French, in which French art and par cularly French pain ng a ained a very high interna onal level. Lesson 8. Claude and Poussin French Painters in Rome It was also the century that produced two major French ar sts who paradoxically, and completely unlike Georges de la Tour and the Le Nain brothers, spent all of their working professional life outside of France. Please register in advance at the front desk or by phone at x 314. Responsorial Psalm Park in Bogotà (2010) Our response to today s first reading is Psalm 139, a song of praise for the complete knowledge that God has about each person. The human heart is transparent to God s look; God knows the most secret and most unknown movements of our souls. Feeling the hand of God on himself fills the psalmist with serenity and abandonment. He no longer asks God to turn away his face but to lead him on the path of fidelity. The psalmist awakens to God; the one whom he thought he had to seek out is already there, present in him as his source of life, more present to him than he is to himself. We can pray this psalm to remind ourselves of the complete knowledge that Jesus has of us. For he is our Creator and Savior who restores the supernatural world and re-creates each of his disciples, making new creatures of them to his own image. Our response today is I praise you, for I am wonderfully made. (v.14) Bernade e Farrell has set Psalm 139 to music in O God, You Search Me, It can be found in Breaking Bread 2018 #438. (To hear a performance of this song of praise, google the tle and composer.) O God, you search me and you know me. All my thoughts lie open to your gaze. When I walk or lie down, you are before me, Ever the maker and keeper of my days. You know my res ng and my rising. You discern my purpose from afar, and with love everlas ng you besiege me: In ev'ry moment of life or death, you are. Before a word is on my tongue, Lord, you have known its meaning through and through. You are with me beyond my understanding: God of my present, my past and future too. Although your Spirit is upon me, s ll I search for shelter from your light. There is nowhere on earth I can escape you: Even the darkness is radiant in your sight. For you created me and shaped me, gave me life within my mother's womb. For the wonder of who I am, I praise you: Safe in your hands, all crea on is made new. Bernade e Farrell (b. 1957) is one of many musicians who compose contemporary Catholic liturgical music. Her music has enjoyed widespread success throughout the English-speaking world. Among her best-known composi ons are "Christ, Be Our Light", "Restless Is The Heart", "God, Beyond All Names" and "O God, You Search Me".

5 Vincent Lebbe LIVING OUR FAITH Apostle to the Chinese ( ) He is remembered on June 24. Vincent Lebbe was one of the persons who inspired the Second Vatican Council. He gave the Church the character of an organization truly and wholly open to all peoples. (Cardinal Leo Josef Suenens) In 1901, Vincent Lebbe, a Vincentian priest from Belgium, arrived in China. Even before his arrival, he was fired by a passionate love for the Chinese and a desire to be one with them. This set him apart from many fellow French missionaries who did not conceal their sense of superiority, remaining ignorant of the language, culture, and history of the Chinese. They could not see how such attitudes alienated them from the people. To Lebbe, this approach was incomprehensible. I myself am a Chinese with all my heart and strength, he wrote. Instead of traditional parish work, Lebbe propagated the Gospel by every means: public lectures, outreach to civic leaders, charitable organizations, schools, and the establishment of a Catholic press. The response was extraordinary. But he offended his superiors and Church authorities with his conviction that the Chinese Church must overcome its dependence on European culture and personnel. He was subjected to relentless harassment. Forced to depart China, Lebbe became a tireless advocate for his cause in Rome. Eventually he won an audience with Pope Pius XI, handing him a list of Chinese priests who would be suitable bishops. The French bishops regarded this as treason. But in 1926, the pope consecrated six of Lebbe s priests. Returning to China, Lebbe became a naturalized citizen. No one could force him to leave again. Upon his death on June 24, 1940, the government of China declared a day of mourning. Robert Ellsberg, Give Us This Day Share the Journey Continues - The Diocese of Venice continues to promote Share the Journey, a worldwide two-year initiative of Our Holy Father, Pope Francis. Fourth in the series What is the Economic Impact? 1. While refugees here five years or less have a median household income of $22,000, that figure more than triples in the following decades, growing far faster than other foreign-born groups. By the time a refugee has been in the U.S. at least 25 years, their median household income reaches $67,000-a full $14,000 more than the median U.S. income. New Economy 2. Refugees find work in the U.S. far earlier than in other countries and start businesses at an even quicker pace than the American-born. Google co-founder Sergey Brin came to America as a refugee. The father of Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, was a Syrian refugee. Sources: University of Notre Dame, MPI, Center for American Progress, Notable Names Database A Prayer for Refugees God of our Wandering Ancestors, Long have we known That your heart is with the refugee: That you were born into me In a family of refugees Fleeing violence in their homeland, Who then gathered up their hungry child And fled into alien country. Their cry, your cry, resounds through the ages: Will you let me in? Give us hearts that break open When our brothers and sisters turn to us with that same cry. Then surely all these things will follow: Ears will no longer turn deaf to their voices. Eyes will see a moment for grace instead of a threat. Tongues will not be silenced but will instead advocate. And hands will reach out working for peace in their homeland, working for jus ce in the lands where they seek safe haven. Lord, protect all refugees in their travels. May they find a friend in me And so make me worthy Of the refuge I have found in you. Amen. Catholic Relief Services

6 YOUTH CORNER St. John the Baptist John the Baptist was born through the intercession of God to Zachariah and to Elizabeth who was otherwise too old to bear children. According to Scripture, the angel Gabriel visited Elizabeth and Zachariah to tell them they would have a son and that they should name him John. Zachariah was skeptical, and for this he was rendered mute until the time his son was born and named John, in fulfillment of God's will. When Elizabeth was pregnant with John, Mary visited her, and John leapt in Elizabeth s womb. This revealed to Elizabeth that the child Mary carried was to be the Son of God. The Holy Children with a Shell, Bartolomé Estaban Murillo, c John began public ministry around 30 AD, and was known for attracting large crowds across the province of Judea and around the Jordan River. When Jesus came to him to be baptized, John recognized him and said, "It is I who need baptism from you." Jesus told John to baptize Him anyway, which he did, whereupon the heavens opened, and the Spirit of God was seen like a dove. The voice of God spoke, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Following his baptism of Christ, John's popularity grew so much that he alarmed King Herod. Herod ordered him arrested and imprisoned. John spoke with Herod on several occasions and condemned his marriage to his half-brother's wife. In revenge for John the Baptist's condemnation of her mother's scandalous marriage to Herod, his daughter asked for John's head. King Herod reluctantly obliged. John the Baptist died sometime between 33 and 36 AD. Madonna with Child, St. Elisabeth and the Infant St. John the Baptist, Francisco Bacchiacca, c John the Baptist's feast day is June 24. The anniversary of his death on August 29 is sometimes celebrated with a second feast. John the Baptist is the patron saint of Jordan, Puerto Rico, French Canada, and many other places. His Name Is John! Erik Rottmann, Arch Books Series, Concordia Publishing House, 2007 Filled with colorful illustrations and a rhyming text, this book introduces children ages 5 to 9 years to John the Baptist, from his miraculous conception to his fulfillment of living God's Word.
