Rabbouni, please help me, but only if it is not too much to ask. Jesus doesn t hesitate to respond to Bar maeus s desire to see, but he does not work magic. The Healing of the Blind Man of Jericho by Nicholas Poussin, 1650 To See Again Jerome Kodell, OSB, Give Us This Day, October 2018 Bar maeus embarrasses us. Here we are, walking along the road with Jesus and our friends, and this blind man cries out for help, spoiling the mood. Be quiet, we say with disapproval, don t bother the teacher. But Bar maeus isn t just himself. He is also us. In the Synop c Gospels the journey to Jerusalem is presented as a spiritual drama, and at this bend in the road we are Bar maeus, crying out for help. It isn t popular to cry out, to embarrass other people with our infirmity. Our culture tells us we are all right as we are: I m okay, you re okay. If we aren t okay if we are in need we should help ourselves. It s uncool to cry out. But Bar maeus is not poli cally correct. He cries out. The New American Bible renders his request as, Master, I want to see. That doesn t catch the hesitancy and humility of the text. The old Douay-Rheims Bible did be er with, That I may see. Though Bar maeus cannot see, and maybe because of that, his ears are sharp. He can pick out the voice of Jesus amid all the other noises. Two other mes Jesus makes statements about seeing that sound almost iden cal but are quite different: Blessed are your eyes, because they see (Ma 13:16); Blessed are the eyes that see what you see (Luke 10:23). The second saying has an object, what you see, which is Jesus himself. But the first is about the grace simply to see, implying the way God sees, which is really seeing. Stephen Covey says it well, We see the world, not as it is, but as we are. The purpose of the ancient spiritual prac ce of lec o divina is not to read more intellectually but to learn to read divinely, not just a text but everything, to see things as they are in God s sight. Technically, what the blind man asks for is not just to see, but to see again, that I might recover my sight. This might add a nuance for us on our own way to Jerusalem. Why is the path so obscure now when at one me it seemed so clear? It won t be by more intense effort on our part that we will see again, but by the gi of Jesus. Maybe what we saw earlier was not really there, or it was there but our eyes were out of focus. There are incredible demands on our eyes and ears every day, and we see and hear many things. With Bar maeus we ask for the gi to penetrate to the authen c voice and see to the heart of what is really going on. We know Jesus wants to help us. We ask to be transformed. War and Witchcra in the Holy Roman Empire On May 23, 1618, a group of Protestants forced their way into Hradcany Palace in Prague looking for Catholic representa ves of the Holy Roman Emperor. They found the men they were looking for, and before the government officials knew what was happening, the Protestants pushed three of them out an open window. Amazingly, they all landed in a compost heap below and lived to tell the tale. This incident, the famous Defenestra on of Prague, launched the Thirty Years War. The Thirty Years War is one of the most complicated and confusing episodes in European history, but this lecture takes a bird s-eye view and focuses on some key characters and events. Lecture 8. Puritans, Kings, and Theology in Prac ce Queen Elizabeth assumed the throne of England in She wanted peace and loyalty, and this meant a Church of England that wouldn t offend anyone too badly. Under Elizabeth, Church of England doctrines were definitely Protestant, but worship and structure s ll looked fairly Catholic. Elizabeth had no children when she died in 1603, so she was succeeded by her distant cousin James I. Before becoming king of England, James had been King of Scotland, a place where the Reforma on had adopted stern Calvinist theology. James loathed Puritans, but to govern England, he had to make peace with them. His situa on is an example of trying to make theology work, which is the focus of this lecture. You can par cipate by volunteering to be a Table Host at the Thanksgiving Dinner. This 18 th annual, family-style-all-the-trimmings Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at First Bap st Church, 1661 Main Street, Sarasota. Table Hosts will need to arrive between 11:00 am and 11:15 am, and be available un l 1:00 pm. Comfortable, casual a re is appropriate. Seated at a table for eight, your role will be to welcome guests, assist with their nametags, introduc ons, and food service at the table. A free-will offering will be received from those who wish to give. Films can be a fine introduction to the saints. And sometimes the movie versions are as good as any biography for conveying the saint's special charism. According to James Martin, SJ, here are the ten best films and documentaries about holy men and women, listed in order of their release. 1. The Song of Bernadette (1943) Effectively conveys Bernadette Soubirous courage in the face of detractors and her refusal to deny her experiences, despite everyone else s doubts. 2. A Man for All Seasons (1966) Paul Scofield stars Sir Thomas More. Here is a portrait of the discerning saint, able both to find nuance in his faith and see when nuance needs to give way to an unambiguous response to injustice. 4. Roses in December (1982) This documentary is a moving testament to the witness of three religious sisters and a lay volunteer who were killed as a result of their work with the poor in El Salvador in December of Merton: A Film Biography (1984) This film is a low-key introduction to Trappist monk Thomas Merton, told with still photographs and interviews with those who knew Merton before and after he entered the monastery. 6. Thérèse (1986) This is a series of vignettes, in French with subtitles, which lead the viewer through the life of Thérèse Martin. It doesn t shrink from showing how difficult life was for Thérèse in the convent at Lisieux, but it also shows the quiet joy that attends the contemplative life. 7. Romero (1989) (He was canonized on October 14 this year.) One of the great strengths of this movie about the martyred archbishop of San Salvador is its depiction of a conversion. Archbishop Oscar Romero moves from a bishop willing to kowtow to the wealthy to a man converted into a prophet for the oppressed. 8. Blackrobe (1991) This film is about the lives of several 17th-century Jesuit martyrs, including St. Jean de Brébeuf and St. Isaac Jogues, who worked among the Hurons and Iroquois in the New World. 9. St. Anthony: Miracle Worker of Padua (2003) In Italian with subtitles, this is the first feature-length film about the 12 th -century saint best known for helping you find your keys. The movie successfully conveys the saint s conversion, the appeal of the simple life, and the miraculous deeds reported in his lifetime. 10. The Saint of 9/11 (2006) Mychal Judge, O.F.M., a beloved fire chaplain in New York City, was killed on Sept. 11, 2001, while ministering to the firefighters in the north tower. This documentary is a clear-eyed look at Father Judge s life, showing how his faith enabled him to deal with his alcoholism and accept his homosexuality, reminding us that sanctity always makes its home in humanity.
