2 LENT The Echo of God s Voice Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, DD, Give Us This Day, March 2018 Two temples were cleansed when Jesus so vividly expressed righteous indigna on at the state of affairs on the Temple Mount. Of course the courtyard leading to the Holy of Holies the sacred space that is s ll honored as the Temple of the Mount by Jews, Muslims, and Chris ans was cleansed of marketers who were distrac ng from the essen al atmosphere of holiness. The soul yearns for that serenity of place that Jesus restored. The peaceful silence of a Church visit s rs the mind and li s the heart to God. But Scripture scholars remind us that Jesus drama c ac ons cleansed a second temple. This involved the hearts of ancient-day scalpers the ones charging extra and taking advantage of the poor who approached the Temple to make their offering. I have never liked the loud scalpers standing outside sports arenas, but this case is worse. The least able to pay were over a barrel. With rather strong ac on, Jesus cleansed the hearts of those greedy merchants so that the echo of God s voice (their consciences) might prevail. That echo of God s voice in our hearts fits into today s first reading from Exodus, describing the handing down of the Ten Commandments to Moses. The stone tablets held laws already wri en on the hearts of all. Good proof might be the Egyp an women who rescued baby Moses from the reeds earlier in the book of Exodus (2:1-10). Long before the Ten Commandments were proclaimed, these women heard the echo of God s voice in their hearts, and it moved them to save an innocent child. As Lenten pilgrims yearning for conversion, we too long to hear this echo. A quiet visit to a holy place might be just what we need to cleanse the temple of our hearts. The Most Reverend Joseph E. Although scholars have paid a en on to the Desert Mothers, general lay audiences have only had access to wri ngs by the Desert Fathers. Unlike most of the scholarly books on the market, this book popularizes the wri ngs and the thinking of the Desert Mothers of the early Church, and applies them to contemporary life. Desert Wisdom: Sayings from the Desert Fathers Henri J. M. Nouwen invites us to search deeply for the wellsprings that nourish true ministry in this classic. Interweaving the solitude, silence, and prayer of the 5 th -century Egyp an Desert Fathers and Mothers with our contemporary search for an authen c spirituality, The Way of the Heart not only leads us to a fuller encounter with God, but to a more crea ve ministry with our fellow human beings. Le ers from the Desert Carlo Carre o (Orbis Books, 1972) BS483.5.C At the age of 44, a er a prominent career as a Catholic ac vist, Carlo Carre o was summoned by a voice that said: "Leave everything, come with me into the desert. I don't want your ac on any longer, I want your prayer, your love." Carre o responded by leaving for North Africa, where he joined the Li le Brothers and embraced the example of Charles de Foucauld. Among the fruits of his response was Le ers from the Desert, the first and most popular of his many books. Simply, it reminds us that in the evening of our lives we will be judged by love.

5 LIVING OUR FAITH Ministry Opportunity We are in the process of re-vitalizing our ministry of Arimatheans. The Arimatheans consists of a group of caring parishioners who wish to support their brothers and sisters in Christ, who have experienced the loss of a loved one, by a ending the funeral as representa ves of our faith community. We at Our Lady of Mount Carmel have regular instances where there are very few or no family members to a end the funeral liturgy. We seek a commi ed group of parishioners who would answer this call to represent our faith community at the funeral liturgies of the deceased. This ministry is open to everyone in the parish, including our seasonal friends. Someone will call each Arimathean, invi ng them to a end an upcoming funeral. If you are available, simply a end. If you can give of your me to be part of this important ministry, or if you have ques ons, please stop at the table in the entryway a er Mass on March 10 and 11 to talk to a current Arimathean and sign up for future involvement. Love, William Dear William, I would heal children. I ve never been able to understand why children suffer. It s a mystery to me. I don t have an explanation. I ask myself about this, and I pray about your question. Why do children suffer? My heart asks the question. Jesus wept, and by weeping, he understood our tragedies. I try to understand, too. Yes, if I could perform a miracle, I would heal every child. Your drawing makes me think: there is a big, dark cross, and a rainbow and the sunshine behind it. I like that. My answer to the pain of children is silence, or perhaps a word that rises from my tears. I m not afraid to cry. You shouldn t be either.
