2 LENT Joseph, Righteous Man and Mary s Spouse Ronald D. Witherup, PSS, Give Us This Day, March 2018 St. Joseph, whose feast we celebrate this week, is patron saint of the universal Church. Surprisingly, the New Testament does not men on him o en. The Gospel of Ma hew, however, features Joseph in the story of Jesus concep on that we hear on his feast day (Ma 1:16, 18-24). The a en ve reader may note some curious details as the tale unfolds. Joseph, from the house of David, is betrothed to a young virgin named Mary. When she is found to be with child miraculously by the Holy Spirit, as the Gospel says the text reads: Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly (Ma 1:19). Note the language. Why is Joseph called her husband and why does he resolve to divorce her quietly? How can that be? They are not yet married, as is clear from the verb betrothed in verse 18! This is not a ques on of the Greek verbs used in this passage; they are translated correctly. For an explana on, we must recall Jewish marriage prac ces in the me of Jesus. In Judaism in the first century, as far as can be determined, girls were usually engaged around the onset of puberty (age 12 13). Parents arranged marriages, and a formal contract was required. Once formally engaged, the couple were considered married even though they did not live together un l the formal marriage ceremony had taken place. Essen ally, they already became husband and wife. So binding was this engagement that a writ of divorce was required if the fiancé wanted to dismiss his fiancée for reasons permi ed in the law. In this case, Joseph decides to divorce her quietly in order to save her (and perhaps himself?) the embarrassment of bearing a child that is not his. A er being reassured by the angel s message of the child s true origin, Joseph accepts Mary as his wife. From the viewpoint of faith, of course, we know the reason for this unusual story. The peculiar circumstances of Jesus concep on and birth are due to the ac on of the Holy Spirit in accordance with God s will, already hinted at in the genealogy (1:1-17). God uses these two obscure, humble servants as vehicles for his favorable ac on of sending humanity his own Son, Jesus, whose very name implies salva on (v. 21). Unlike Luke s parallel passage of Jesus concep on, in which Joseph is completely absent (Luke 1:26-38), Ma hew highlights Joseph s dignified behavior in obedience to God s will, to which the Catechism of the Catholic Church also draws a en on ( 437). Joseph is labeled righteous for his kindness toward Mary in not wan ng to humiliate her for an unforeseen pregnancy. Righteousness living an upright ethical life before God and humanity is a major theme in Ma hew. It is the value that most characterizes those who wish to enter the kingdom of God (25:37, 46). Moreover, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus calls his disciples to a greater righteousness (5:20), surpassing normal expecta ons of ethical duty. Joseph, then, like Abraham before him (Romans 4), is an eminent model of this righteousness to which we in the Church are all called. Fr. Ronald D. In an age when many s ll adhered to an inward-looking spirituality tainted by Jansenism, Vincent brought the focus to the larger world in need of redemp on through the prac ce of Chris an charity. St. Louise de Marillac became a companion to St. Vincent. They complemented each other with two very different personali es and skill sets. Together, they founded the Daughters of Charity, a radical break with previous forms of religious life for women. Elizabeth Ann Seton brought the spirit and way of life of Vincent and Louise to America. She founded the sisters of Charity. Join us for this insight into Vincen an spirituality. This is the final lesson of this series. Immokalee Food Drive We had a wonderful collection for the Immokalee Food Drive. Thanks to your generosity, a great amount of food and $ were delivered to Immokalee on Monday March 12. The next collection will be held on the 14th & 15th of April. 5 LIVING OUR FAITH You are invited to Walk Your Faith in Holy Week by experiencing the Stations of the Cross in silent procession. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church will be participating with pastors, priests, church leaders, choirs, and youth groups from churches throughout Sarasota County. Stopping for worship and prayer at each of the 14 outdoor Stations will offer an opportunity for reflection on the different moments of Christ s Passion journey. A service booklet sharing the acts of worship for each Station will be distributed to all participating pilgrims. Walk Your Faith: Sarasota s Good Friday Pilgrimage Good Friday, March 30, will be 17th year that Sarasota County churches have participated in the Stations of the Cross. More than 800 pilgrims in 2017 brought Good Friday to the streets of downtown Sarasota. We will gather at 7:15 AM and begin at 7:30 AM in front of the Hollywood 20 Theater on Main Street. The final station is at the Church of the Redeemer, 222 S. Palm Ave., and will be reached about 8:30 AM, when all are invited to a Service of Morning Prayer (Matins) in the church. Buses will transport pilgrims from Redeemer Church to Hollywood 20 Theater beginning at 6:30 AM. For more information, contact Doris R. A lovely lunch was provided and donations were collected for the Venice Area Pregnancy Care Center. The Center of Hope Monthly Collection of Personal Hygiene Items Next weekend, March 24 and 25, OLMC will collect personal hygiene items to be distributed by The Center of Hope of South County. 6 YOUTH CORNER Healthy Ssss-snacks for St. Patrick's Day Legend credits St. Patrick with banishing snakes from the island of Ireland, chasing them into the sea. Regardless of whether or not this legend is true, St. Patrick is the patron saint against snakes, fear of snakes, and snake bites, making this an appropriate snack in honor of his feast day! Cucumber Snakes Ingredients: Cucumbers, Olives, Red Pepper, Hummus or Ranch Dip, optional Directions: Slice and arrange the cucumber slices as shown, then add an olive slice for the eye, a red pepper tongue, and a snake pit of hummus or dip. "He was a terror to any snake that came in his path, whether it was the cold, slimy reptile sliding along the ground or the more dangerous snake that oppresses men through false teachings. And he drove the snakes out of the minds of men, snakes of superstition and brutality and cruelty." ~ Arthur Brisbane Flag of Ireland Vegetable Tray There are a number of various vegetables you can use to make the Flag of Ireland. This tray uses celery, cauliflower with ranch dressing, and baby carrots. You can also use cucumbers or snap peas for green, and cheese for white. It is an easy way to tie in some healthy snacks on this great feast day! St. Patrick, Patron of Ireland, pray for us!
