2 Christmastide who spoke of Jesus mission and the sorrow that would pierce Mary s heart. Their holiness did not shelter them from sorrow and pain. They showed up again at the temple a dozen years later to celebrate Passover, along with others from their extended family who traveled with them. And as they began their return they realized their son was le behind so they showed up in the holy city again to find him learning from the Jewish elders. Their holiness did not protect them from the panic of losing a child or the confusion over what he was learning and what it might mean. The Holy and Human Family Cackie Upchurch, Give Us This Day, December 2018 At Mass on the Feast of the Holy Family one year, I sat next to a young couple with a number of children. I remarked to the mother that she had a beau ful family. She responded along the lines of, I don t know how beau ful we are, or how holy, but we re here! That just seemed to capture perfectly what this celebra on can mean for us. Sadly, many associate holiness with some kind of perfec on in piety, and so we might assume that the family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph embodied that. Surely there were no humdrum days of boredom, no resentments allowed to fester, no struggles to make ends meet, and no impa ence in family dynamics. But the truth is that our primary source of informa on about their life offers us very li le real informa on about those dynamics. We do know that Mary and Joseph showed up, just as the young mother in my parish, where they expected God to be present. They showed up with their infant son at the temple for his purifica on. There they met Anna, the elderly and faithful widow who recognized the child as the one to bring about redemp on. They also met Simeon, the devout man We can imagine they showed up also in the town square of Nazareth to sell or trade the goods Joseph and Jesus may have fashioned with their carpentry skills. They showed up for regular Sabbath meals and for water at the town s well. Their holiness did not release them from the normal rou nes of life. Mary showed up at a wedding in Cana and, in spite of Jesus reluctance, she urged him to take responsibility for the celebra on and for the supply of wine, urging him to begin to reveal himself as the Son of God. Holiness did not let them avoid community needs. And Mary showed up at the cross, at the crucifixion of her son. Holiness did not prevent her from seeing her son condemned or spare her the deep sorrow of losing a child, nor did it shield him from witnessing the anguish of his grieving mother. Family life has always been a bit of a mess and a bit of a miracle. I ve never known a family that meets the ideal of perfec on we imagine from a distance. There always seems to be some level of dysfunc on, some rupture that needs repair, some craziness that requires lessons in coping and persis ng. But there s also some level of grace that can be found in our homes or our memories of growing up. The key may just be showing up and looking for the holiness of the moments. Although Christmas Day has become the primary celebra on of the Incarna on, the celebra on includes other aspects of God s divinity becoming united to our humanity in Jesus. In the early church, the main celebra on of this season was the Epiphany and the focus was on God s revela on of the divine nature in Jesus. Although Christmas gradually became the primary liturgical focus instead of Epiphany, the whole Christmas season reminds us that our concern is not just on Jesus the baby in the manger. By including the feasts of the martyr Stephen, the massacred Holy Innocents, the Epiphany and Jesus s bap sm, we realize that Christ s incarna on always includes not only acceptance but also rejec on and persecu on.
