2 ORDINARY TIME Because He Knows Our Names Joseph G. Donders, Give Us This Day, September 2018 This world does not respect people because they are people. It respects people because they are influen al, because they are important. The people who are not important who respects the people who are not important? Who speaks to them, who cares for them? That is why all over the world so many children run around half-dressed and half-fed. This world lacks interest in people, in its people. Jesus said: Nobody among you should be called master, or teacher, or father. When they asked him who was the most important, he called a small, smelly, unwashed street boy over and said to them: This one. This Jesus, our universal king, showed us that our whole a tude should change, that our world should change in a revolu onary way, that we should respect all people for the simple fact that they happen to be God s people. That we should respect all people, because they are his sheep, the lean ones and the fat ones. That we should respect all people, because Jesus knows their names. That is his power, that is his kingdom, knowing their names. He is not interested in their cars, in the quality of their clothes, in their degrees, in their prizes and awards, in their grades and insignias, in their func ons and training and success. He knows their names. He knows them, and he wishes them all well, and all they need. And that is how we should behave, and that is why the world should change, in the East, in the West, in the North, and in the South. That is how he enables us to see the world as it should be, an oikoumene, a humanly inhabited world, where there is a place and me for everybody. A world in which people will not only be with each other, but for each other. Joseph G. Donders ( ), a member of the Missionaries of Africa, spent fi y-six years in Italy, Kenya, the United States, and the Netherlands. He taught philosophy and theology in Esch (Netherlands), Nairobi, and at Washington Theological Union in Washington, DC. Into your hands, O Lord, we commend the souls of our recently departed. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace: Reverend William O Malley, O.Carm

It is our responsibility to do all we can to promote the belief that every life, in all its stages, regardless of age or condi on, is truly worth living. During the Vigil Mass on September 29th and Sunday, September 30th, Parishes throughout the Diocese of Venice will conduct a special second collec on to augment the lifeaffirming work of the Diocesan Respect Life Office. 4 ADULT FAITH ENRICHMENT Wonders of the Na onal Parks: A Geology of North America with Geologist Ford Cochran of Na onal Geographic A Great Courses DVD Series Thursday, September 27, 10:30 AM 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM 2:30 PM Rooms 4 and 6 Lecture 11. The Colorado Rocky Mountains The Colorado Rocky Mountains owe their existence to subduction of young, warm ocean crust far away, along the Pacific Coast. The key to traversing such a vast distance was a shallow subduction. This is apparently what allowed a plate moving in from the Pacific Ocean to push up billion-year-old blocks of basement crust, located 800 miles inland from the Pacific Coast. Colorado s magnificent mountain range shows the long reach of plate tectonics, as well as the soaring peaks that can be created almost a thousand miles away from the initial point of collision. Lecture 12. Montana s Glacier and the Canadian Rockies A thrust block of ancient sedimentary rock slid dozens of miles before coming to rest atop Glacier National Park. The glaciers that buried much of northern North America beneath rivers of ice shaped and sculpted this stratigraphic wayfarer, leaving the spectacular mountains, valleys, and lakes we visit and witness in the park today. Although only shrinking vestiges of the glaciers remain, the Northern Rockies landscape they shaped will persist, even if Glacier National Park might lose the last of its glaciers. Meanwhile, the world of active glaciers, while vanishing from Glacier National Park continues to the north, in the national parks of the Canadian Rockies. Stewardship: A Response of Faith Our Lady of Light Parish, Fort Myers October 3, 2018, 8:30 am 3:00 pm This event will focus on the best practices of sharing the principles of ownership, responsibility, accountability and the rewards of adopting stewardship as a way of life. Sessions will be in English and Spanish. Keynote presenter: Deacon Don McArdle Other presenters include: Allan Caballero, Rev. Phillip Schweda, Michael Morse, Grace Veloz, Roger Navarro, Carla L. Repollet, Jim Kelley, Jose De Jesus. Mass will be celebrated by Most Reverend Frank J. Dewane. Cost: $10 includes breakfast and lunch To register, go to Books of Interest The Showings of Julian of Norwich: A New Transla on Mirabai Starr, Hampton Roads Publishers, 2013 A fresh and contemporary transla on of one of the best-loved and influen al mys cal texts of all me, The Showings of Julian of Norwich brings the message and spirituality of this 14 th -century mys c to 21 st -century readers. Julian of Norwich, a contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, was an English anchoress in East Anglia. At the age of 30, suffering from a severe illness and believing she was on her deathbed, Julian had a series of intense visions of Jesus, which she recorded and then expanded on later in her life. Her message for today's readers is simply this: She reveals the feminine face of the Divine and reminds us to see God there. All our failings are an opportunity to learn and grow; that they should be honored, but not dwelled upon. God's love has nothing to do with love and retribu on and everything to do with love and compassion. In spite of all appearances, all is well. This book is available for loan from our parish library.

Turn, Turn, Turn Ecclesiastes: Turntable Truth Alice Camille, Give Us This Day, September 2018 Some mes it takes awhile for a composi on to become a classic. Ecclesiastes was around for a few millennia before Pete Seeger made Ecclesiastes 3 There is an appointed me for everything... one of the most recognizable Bible passages in the world. Seeger wrote the folk song Turn! Turn! Turn! in the late 1950s. The Byrds took it to the top of the charts in Funny thing is, the word turn doesn t appear in the Scripture passage. Yet the no on that life is a pendulum, ceaselessly rocking, is there. Life can go either way and in fact will go both ways, before it s over. Each of us will be happy and sad, strong and sick, winners and losers, before we re through. We ll celebrate and endure; know grand days and terrifying ones. We ll be glad to be alive. And wish we hadn t been born. Seeger was modest about the song s success. He never claimed more than 55 percent of the royal es 50 percent for the melody, and 5 percent for the line he added at the end of the song: I swear it s not too late. Those six words converted an ancient wisdom text into a contemporary plea, spinning dusty philosophy into a poignant call to ac vism. Turn, indeed! The song doesn t stop turning. Dozens of professional singers have recorded it. Want to kill an a ernoon on YouTube? I confess I did. You can hear Ecclesiastes 3 performed on solo ukulele or synthesizer. Church choirs turn it into a hymn, and a rabbi s rendi on makes it interfaith. David Crosby did a tribute with it a er Seeger s death. Judy Collins offers it like angel s breath, and Johnny Cash delivers it from the gut. The Seekers explore its peace-anthem quality. Dolly Parton alternates the line for everything there is a season with a reason which is how it s o en interpreted, anyway. Nina Simone finds the blues, while Susan Werner gives it classical treatment with piano and cello. An ironic ar st performs it under the tle Turn Cubed. Muppets lip-synch it. The movie Forrest Gump used it as backdrop for the Vietnam era. An Australian elec on campaign co-opted the message by playing the Byrds version under the logo Change! Change! Change! YouTube even sports a La n version en tled Vertere, rendering the song accompanied by sorry to say images of cats. From Scripture to Byrds to cats? Qoheleth, the source writer for this material, would have been amazed. Unlike Seeger, Ecclesiastes author wasn t a pacifist making a social statement. He was more like the modern spiritual seeker: one who s sat in too many pews and heard too many faith claims that don t square with experience. Qoheleth insists that human suffering is too hard and real to overlook in favor of the religious fantasy that good people will be inoculated against all harm. Repea ng creeds won t make us happy or keep us safe. While religion shines a flashlight on some mysteries, it leaves others just as baffling. Qoheleth observes that honesty is the best policy, in faith as elsewhere. If life turns on anything, he declares, it s on the truth of human experience. Such truth is too dearly bought to surrender for the amulet of a comfortable dogma. The children of Qoheleth are s ll among us, asking hear elt ques ons. They deserve though ul engagement. I swear, it s not too late. Alice Camille is the author of For Everything There Is a Season, and other tles at

6 YOUTH CORNER Feast of the Archangels Michaelmas - September 29 On September 29, we celebrate the feast of three archangels: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. In some countries, this day is called Michaelmas. St. Michael The archangel Michael is also known as "the prince of the heavenly host." He is usually pictured as a strong warrior, dressed in armor and wearing sandals. From the Book of Revelation we learn of the battle in heaven, with St. Michael and his angels combatting Lucifer and the other fallen angels. St. Michael is the patron of artists, bakers, endangered children, those who are dying, police officers, and those in need of protection. St. Gabriel St. Gabriel's name means "God is my strength". Gabriel is most known as the angel chosen by God to be the messenger of the Annunciation, to announce to mankind the mystery of the Incarnation. Gabriel s salutation to Mary, Hail Mary, full of grace, has become a constant and familiar prayer. Gabriel is the patron of ambassadors, broadcasting, messengers, postal workers, and stamp collectors. St. Raphael We know about Raphael from the book of Tobit. His mission as a wonderful healer and fellow traveler with the youthful Tobias has caused him to be invoked for journeys and at critical moments in life. Raphael is also the angel who stirred the waters at the healing sheep pool in Bethesda. His name means "God has healed". Raphael is the patron of the blind, counselors, those with eye problems, healers, nurses, travelers, and young people leaving home for the first time. Angel Food Blackberry Trifle Blackberries are traditional for celebrating the feast of St. Michael. Here is a trifle recipe that is great with or without real blackberries. Blackberry jam substitutes for the real berries and is a lovely compliment to the sweet lemon cream and light angel food cake which reminds us of the other archangels we celebrate today. Ingredients 1 angel food cake, chopped up into bite-sized pieces 2 (8 oz.) tubs Cool Whip or equivalent whipped cream 2 lemons 1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk Fresh or frozen blackberries or blackberry jam or preserves Instructions Zest lemons to measure 1 T. of zest. Next, juice lemons to measure 1/4 c. In a bowl, whisk together sweetened condensed milk, lemon zest, & juice. Fold in 1-1/2 c. of Cool Whip. Set lemon cream aside. Put 1/3 of the cake bits in the bottom of a tall glass container. Spoon 1/3 of the lemon cream on top along with scoops of plain cream. Add blackberries, sprinkling a few here and there or enough to make a solid layer depending on your fondness for blackberries. If you are using the jam instead, drop spoonfuls of it on top of the cake before the cream layer. Repeat twice to make 3 layers finishing with a layer of Cool Whip. Top with more blackberries.
