The Last Supper Juan de Juanes oil on panel-1560 REFLECTION O Sacred Banquet Thousands of books have been written on the theology of the Eucharist. Theologians have struggled for centuries to put into words the overwhelming mystery of God s self-giving in the sacrament of Jesus body and blood. That struggle continues. Back in grade school we had a teacher who had a deep devotion to the Eucharist. She encouraged us to memorize a prayer from our rich tradition. I am eternally indebted to her that challenge-- and to St Thomas Aquinas for the prayer: One of the great doctors of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas maintained that the Eucharist has three major components: memory of the past, a present grace, and hope of eternal life. In the above prayer we experience all of these: we remember what Jesus did at the Last Supper in giving us his body and blood and then dying on the cross; we celebrate at the altar God s love and life (grace) that nourish us to go forth in compassion and service; and we look forward to the day when, with the communion of saints, we will participate in the heavenly banquet. On this feast of the Body and Blood of Christ we cry out our Amen! So be it!. In affirming our faith in the Eucharist we are also committing ourselves to serving the poor, showing compassion to the suffering, forgiving those who have injured us, and expressing our gratitude for all God s gifts. A Very Special Day.. Our own Janine Marrone, OLMC life advocacy coordinator, and her counterpart, Kathie Majerchin, respect life coordinator from San Pedro parish, deliver Holy Communion to a local assisted living facility and lead the rosary there twice weekly. Several months ago, one of the new residents expressed a desire to convert to Catholicism. Through Our Lady of Lourdes parish, this transpired within just a few months, and that very resident was baptized and made her first Holy Communion last week. Kathie and Janine were privileged to be the Godmothers and sponsors of the process. As Godmothers, their role is to aid the spiritual journey of their Godchild. As Janine explains: As part of our baptismal vows, we are all called to be prophets, priests and kings. Seldom do we get a chance to be all three unless we present ourselves within God s will to just be present, and lo and behold, within God s will, we are blessed because we are somehow doing God s will and not our own. It was a very special day for both Kathie and me. I am sharing this message as a request that we all reflect on our vow to be Priest, Prophet and King as part of the Church, the Body of Christ. LIVING OUR FAITH "Borrowing from something Pope Francis said recently, he reminds us that as Catholics, we can't watch from the sidelines and like Pontius Pilate wash our hands of what we see. We need to get engaged. Through the grace of God and through the Holy Spirit, we have to act on what we see and at least on this occasion, we were afforded that blessing and opportunity. 5 WISDOM OF OUR FAITH Witnesses for Our Time Hans Urs von Balthasar Theologian and Priest ( ) He is remembered on June 26. In the Trinitarian dogma God is one, good, true, and beautiful because he is essentially Love, and Love supposes the one, the others, and their unity. Hans Urs von Balthasar, a Swiss theologian, never held an academic post. Alone among the great theologians of his generation, he was not invited to participate in Vatican II. Yet in his massive output, he played an enormous role in shifting the axis of Catholic theology. He was influenced by his reading of the Church Fathers, and later by the Swiss Reformed theologian, Karl Barth. A third great influence came from his encounters with doctor and mystic Adrienne von Speyr, whom he regarded as his theological partner and teacher. His most significant work was an enormous trilogy of many volumes, tracing God s relation to creation in the converging lines of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. He called his work a kneeling theology, indicating its relation to contemplative prayer as opposed to a merely academic or sitting theology. In 1988, Pope John Paul II asked him to become a cardinal. In this deeply personal book, Father Ronald Rolheiser delves into the history and meaning of this sacred tradition, drawing upon the insights of various Scripture scholars, theologians, and Church teachings. With personal warmth and great insight, he reflects on his own particular Roman Catholic upbringing and the centrality that the Eucharist has within that tradition. At the same time, he looks at other denominations traditions around the Eucharist. Our One Great Act of Fidelity is an investigation into the ways people secure their faith and belief and discover true intimacy with God and each other. Ultimately, however, it is a spiritual and a personal statement of how Ronald Rolheiser understands the Eucharist and why he celebrates it every day. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI is a specialist in the field of spirituality and is currently President of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas. Father Rolheiser is the author of The Holy Longing, The Restless Heart, Forgotten Among the Lilies, The Shattered Lantern, and Against an Infinite Horizon. The America issue for May 26 June 2, 2014 features his article called We Praise You, O God! Scripture in Contemporary Liturgical Music. This is an excerpt of the article: As Roman Catholics observe the 50th anniversary of the promulgation of the Second Vatican Council s Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, it seems an appropriate time to consider ways contemporary liturgical music supports the word proclaimed and preached. Contemporary liturgical composers and lyricists have done a great service to the church by cultivating easy access to Sacred Scripture for all the Christian faithful (No. 22). They have sowed the word in the hearts, minds and memories of the faithful by uniting scripturally based texts with memorable melodies.

6 WISDOM OF OUR FAITH Sacred Art Defenders of the Eucharist Peter Paul Rubens ( ), Flemish Part of a series of tapestries in Descalzas Reales, Madrid Oil on canvas, 1625, tapestry cartoon, Ringling Museum in Sarasota. A cartoon is a full-scale preparatory design for a work in a different medium. Defenders of the Eucharist is a mirror composition painted on canvas in preparation for its rendering as a tapestry. This painting (cartoon) shows a procession of seven saints who were considered to be defenders of the doctrine of transubstantiation, an integral tenet of the Catholic Church. From the right the figures represent: 1) St. Jerome, noted for his translation of the Bible from Hebrew into Latin; 2) St. Norbert, a German archbishop who preached against dissenters who attacked the Christian sacraments and official clergy; 3) St. Thomas Aquinas, whose writings became the basis for much of the doctrine of the Catholic Church; 4) St. Clare, who repulsed the Saracens at Assisi by confronting them holding the Host in her hands; 5) St. Gregory the Great, who established the form of the Roman liturgy; 6) St. Ambrose, who was instrumental in crushing Arianism, a doctrine concerning the relationship of God the Father to Christ which was in direct opposition to orthodox teaching about the Trinity; and 7) St. Augustine, perhaps the Church's most celebrated and influential theologian. The Holy Spirit hovers protectively over the saints in the very center of the composition emitting golden light that illuminates the procession. In the center of the bottom of the composition are a burning lamp, open books, and writing supplies, all in reference to the writings of the Church Fathers. Peter Paul Rubens was one of the greatest artists of the 17th century. His canvases can be said to define the scope and style of high baroque painting through their energy, earthy humanity, and inventiveness. A devoutly religious man, a man of learning, and a connoisseur of art and antiquities, he was also a man of the world who succeeded not only as an artist but also as a respected diplomat in the service of Isabella and Albrecht of the Spanish Netherlands. His genius found expression in his designs for the Triumph of the Eucharist tapestries, which he and his assistants completed between 1625 and KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Father Bill Receives Inaugural Award The Knights of Columbus Council presented Father Bill O Malley with their inaugural Knight of the Year award for his work as Chaplain of the council.
