2 ORDINARY TIME to me. So o en I whine and grumble to God, saying I want to live differently, more fully. But the truth is I really prefer the comfort of my own cap vity to the discomfort that comes with the risk of stepping into real transforma on. The Israelites Gathering Manna in the Desert, Nicolas Poussin, 1637 Enough Is More than Enough Mary DeTurris Poust, Give Us This Day, August 2018 No good deed goes unpunished. That s certainly how it seems in today s first reading, as the Israelites grumble against Moses for leading them out of the land of their cap vity. They would rather be cap ve with bellies full than free and hungry, or so they say from their place of despera on. Unfortunately, that makes perfect sense God does not let the whining go unanswered the Israelites or ours. He sends them manna from heaven, a daily por on, just enough. It required a daily act of faith, trus ng that God would provide again and again. And God did. In similar fashion, when we pray the Our Father, we say, Give us this day our daily bread. We don t ask for bread in abundance; we ask for just enough. And Jesus comes to us in the form of bread so powerful that even a single crumb would sa sfy. God s way requires a paradigm shi. We do not need to stockpile manna in the pantry alongside the canned soup and boxed pasta. We need only enough for one day, this day. All we have to do is ask and receive our daily bread, Jesus himself, which is more than we can ever imagine, more than enough. Mary DeTurris Poust is the director of communica ons for the Diocese of Albany, New York, and the author of six books on Catholic spirituality.

REGIONAL SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING As Christian adults, we have a moral and legal responsibility and are entrusted by God with the spiritual, emotional and physical well-being of minors and vulnerable adults. As they participate in activities within or sponsored by our diocese, it is our commitment to provide an environment which is safe and nurturing. In accordance with the Diocese of Venice policy to offer continued Safe Environment Awareness to all employees and volunteers, the following parishes will hold Regional Safe Environment Awareness training sessions. All diocesan employees...clergy, religious, laity, and those volunteers who have routine contact with children or vulnerable adults, MUST BE TRAINED in Safe Environment Awareness issues. No one should attend Safe Environment Training until their fingerprints have cleared. Continued employment/volunteer status requires that you attend one of these sessions. Due to the sensitive nature of this training, no children are permitted to attend. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel will be hosting safe environment training at 6:00 PM Thursday, August 7th, and 9:30 AM August 9th. 5 Series on the Prophets Part 4 Habakkuk: The Book of Anguished Ques ons and Difficult Answers Harry P. Nasu, Give Us This Day, August 2018 Alone among the prophe c books, Habakkuk opens not with an oracle from God but with a series of ques ons the prophet addresses to God (1:2-4). These are formidable ques ons, deeply felt by the prophet and shared by all who do not understand what they see in the world around them. How long will God be silent in the face of violence? Why does God not do something about the way the wicked pervert jus ce by tormen ng the righteous? Such ques ons are not, of course, just requests for informa on on Habakkuk s part. Rather, like similar ques ons found in the lament psalms, they are part of an impassioned complaint that demands divine ac on to remedy what is ul mately a theologically scandalous situa on. While such complaints are not always answered in the psalms, here God does respond to Habakkuk s ques ons but in a way that raises even more ques ons. God addresses the violence to which the prophet has objected at the beginning of the book by promising to bring the fearsome Babylonians in judgment upon the en re na on (cf. 1:5-11). God knows that such ac ons are unexpected and even unbelievable (1:5). Surely, as bad as Israel might be, the Babylonians are even less righteous, filled with greed for conquest and pride in their own power. LIVING OUR FAITH As a result, in this Saturday s first reading, Habakkuk con nues his ques oning of God: Why, then, do you gaze on the faithless in silence while the wicked man devours one more just than himself? (1:13). Shall he, then, keep on brandishing his sword to slay peoples without mercy? (1:17). To the prophet, this is clearly at odds with the character of the immortal God whose eyes are too pure to look upon evil (1:13). Saturday s reading goes on to describe how Habakkuk insists on an answer to his complaint and assumes the role of a watchman who looks for God s response. Once again, God does answer, this me furnishing the prophet with a vision to be wri en down and shared with others. At its fulfillment, the na ons will taunt the Babylonians who have commi ed so many crimes against them (2:6-20). Habakkuk reveals the nature of God s ac vity to the reader in the hymn now found in the third and final chapter of the book. This hymn paints a terrifying picture of a God whose righteous wrath and overwhelming power leaves the physical world, its poli cal en es, and even the prophet himself trembling and begging for mercy. S ll, no precise meframe is given for the comple on of this divine work. So both Habakkuk and the reader must do what is perhaps the hardest thing of all: to wait, in confidence, and even in joy, despite the clear evidence of one s own eyes that it is the wicked who are ascendant in this world (3:16-19). It is in such sincerely expectant wai ng that the righteous live by their faith in God s promises (2:4) and show their trust that God is actually in control. In our lives, as in the book of Habakkuk, such radical faith and trust tend to emerge only out of a series of anguished ques ons that can -- some mes lead to a life-changing glimpse of God s hidden power. Harry P. Nasu is professor of theology at Fordham University, Bronx, New York. Witnesses for Our Time Ruth Pfau Medical Missionary ( ) She is remembered on August 9. Leading a life commi ed to service does protect the soul from wounds. These are the workings of God. Ruth Pfau was born in Leipzig in A er surviving Allied bombing during the war, she escaped East Germany to study medicine in Mainz. Inspired by the example of a concentra on camp survivor who had devoted her life to promo ng forgiveness, she became a Catholic and then, in 1957, joined the Society of Daughters of the Heart of Mary, a missionary order. When you receive such a calling, she observed, you cannot turn it down, for it is not you who has made the choice. God has chosen you for himself. In 1960, while passing through Pakistan on her way to India, she visited a leper colony in Karachi. She was struck by the sight of a young man who crawled on hands and feet into this dispensary, ac ng as if this was quite normal. At once she was inspired to make a key decision to remain in Pakistan and to minister to those suffering from leprosy. Over the next thirty-five years, through a network of centers, she treated over 50,000 pa ents. When, in 1996, the World Health Organiza on declared that leprosy in Pakistan was under control, she moved on to other disabili es, including vic ms of land mines from neighboring Afghanistan. Not all of us can prevent a war, she said, but most of us can help ease sufferings of the body and the soul. Upon her death on August 10, 2017, she was hailed in Pakistan as a na onal hero and granted a state funeral.

6 YOUTH CORNER Celebrating Bread For five consecutive weeks in July and August, the Gospel reading is from Chapter 6 of John the Bread of Life discourse. To help you celebrate bread, we are highlighting two books one for adult bakers and one for children bakers. Celebrating Breads: Recipes, Tales, and Traditions by Betsy Oppenneer, illustrated by John Burgoyne. (Simon & Schuster, 2003, 368 pp.) With recipes for more than 75 savory and sweet breads, Oppenneer's book offers home bakers accessible, homey recipes with wonderful histories about the celebrations associated with each entry. The author, a culinary teacher and consultant, lists the basics, such as ingredients, equipment and the steps to making bread (whether by hand, heavy-duty mixer, food processor or bread machine). From there, she organizes her book according to geographic region (Africa, The Americas, British Isles, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, etc.). Her choices sometimes surprise: under Morocco, she places the Yom Kippur celebratory dish, Sephardi Bread, which is filled with a mixture of coriander seeds and almonds. For a wedding celebration, Oppenneer recommends Irish Soda Bread ("bread was broken over the bride as she entered her new home and became the woman of the house"). This solid book's stories are as warm and pleasing as fresh-baked bread. Baking Bread with Children by Lee Cohen, illustrated by Marije Rowling (Hawthorn Press, 2008, 224 pages) Baking Bread with Children is an invitation to share the magic of baking bread with children of all ages. It includes everything you need to get started: the basics of bread for beginners; a variety of delicious recipes; and a rich store of multicultural stories, songs, and blessings to enliven the whole experience. Christian Music In the Breaking of the Bread Bob Hurd and Michael Downey Based on Luke 24:13-35, 1987, Breaking Bread 2018, #325 In the breaking of the bread We have known Him; we have been fed. Jesus the stranger, Jesus the Lord, Be our companion, be our hope. Once I was helpless, sad and confused Darkness surrounded me, courage removed And then I saw him by my side Carry my burden; open my eyes. There is no sorrow, pain or woe, There is no suffering he did not know, He did not waver; he did not bend. He is the victor; he is my friend. Bread for the journey, strength for our years, Manna of ages of struggle and tears Cup of salvation, fruit of the land, Bless and receive now, the work of our hands. Bread of the promise, people of hope, Wine of compassion, life for the world Gathered at table, joined as one body. Sealed in the spirit, sent by the Word. There is a YouTube performance of this song at
