2 Of Palms and Palm Branches Sr. Barbara Reid, OP, Give Us This Day, March 2018 The Sixth Sunday of Lent, known as both Passion Sunday and Palm Sunday, is the beginning of Holy Week and is marked by a ritual at the beginning of Mass that consists of blessing palms, distribu ng them to the faithful, reading the Gospel account of Jesus entry into Jerusalem, and processing into the church while all hold palm branches alo. The Palm Sunday ceremony most likely originated in Jerusalem in the late 4 th century. The inspira on for it comes from the account in the Gospels of how Jesus made his entry into Jerusalem where he would suffer and die (Ma 21:1-9; Mark 11:1-10; Luke 19:28-40; John 12:12-19). In Mark s Gospel, Jesus sends two disciples into the village with instruc ons to bring him a colt, which he then sits upon and rides down from the Mount of Olives into Jerusalem. As he goes along, many people spread their cloaks on the road and others spread leafy branches they have cut from the field. There are some varia ons in the accounts of Ma hew and Luke: Ma hew says that some people cut branches from the trees (Ma 21:8) rather than from the field (Mark 11:8), and Luke omits this detail completely. It is the Fourth Evangelist who specifies that the branches were from palm trees (John 12:13). While many Bible commentaries interpret this story as the Triumphal Entry of the messianic king who has come to claim his capital city and his Temple, others propose that Jesus ac on was not that of a conquering hero but a PALM SUNDAY symbolic ac on or prophe c demonstra on that was meant to counter na onalis c hopes that Jesus would be a poli cal liberator. That the waving of palm fronds has na onalis c overtones can be seen from several biblical episodes set in Maccabean mes. People carried palm fronds to the Temple when it was rededicated by Judas Maccabeus in 164 BC (2 Macc 10:7). Likewise, in 142 BC when the Jews, led by Simon, retook possession of the Jerusalem citadel, they carried palm branches (1 Macc 13:51). The account of Jesus entry into Jerusalem and the books of Maccabees are not the only places in the Bible where palms are men oned. Date palms grow plen fully in oases such as Elim, one of the stops of the Israelites on their journey from Egypt (Exod 15:27; Num 33:9). Jericho, another oasis in the desert, was known as the city of palms (Deut 34:3; 2 Chron 28:15). Deborah used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the Israelites came up to her for judgment (Jgs 4:5). The psalmist describes how the righteous flourish like the palm tree (92:12). In the Song of Songs the beloved maiden is said to be stately as a palm tree (7:7-8). Solomon s temple was adorned with carvings of palm trees (1 Kgs 6:29, 32, 35). In the book of Revela on there is a vivid image of the redeemed: A er this I looked, and there was a great mul tude that no one could count, from every na on, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, Salva on belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! (7:9-10). It is likely that this was the text that led to the palm branch being used as the symbol of the martyr. The symbolism behind palms is rich, invi ng us to enter into the mysteries of God s universal love and signaling the surprising nature of Christ s kingship as well as the costly nature of discipleship. Barbara Reid, OP, is professor of New Testament and vice president and academic dean at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. Chrism Mass - The Chrism Mass, which takes place during Holy Week every year, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 27 at Epiphany Cathedral, 350 Tampa Ave. W., in Venice. During this Mass, the faithful of the Diocese join the Priests, Deacons and Bishop Frank J. Dewane for the blessing of the Holy Oils, which are used in the administration of the Sacraments at each parish throughout the year. Priests and Deacons celebrating 25 and 50 years of Ordination are recognized at this Mass. All are encouraged to attend in support of our clergy and to participate in this important Holy Week celebration.
5 LIVING OUR FAITH Walk Your Faith: Sarasota s Good Friday Pilgrimage Good Friday, March 30, will be 17th year that Sarasota County churches have participated in the Stations of the Cross. More than 800 pilgrims in 2017 brought Good Friday to the streets of downtown Sarasota. You are invited to Walk Your Faith in Holy Week by experiencing the Stations of the Cross in silent procession. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church will be participating with pastors, priests, church leaders, choirs, and youth groups from churches throughout Sarasota County. Stopping for worship and prayer at each of the 14 outdoor Stations will offer an opportunity for reflection on the different moments of Christ s Passion journey. A service booklet sharing the acts of worship for each Station will be distributed to all participating pilgrims. We will gather at 7:15 AM and begin at 7:30 AM in front of the Hollywood 20 Theater on Main Street. The final station is at the Church of the Redeemer, 222 S. Palm Ave., and will be reached about 8:30 AM, when all are invited to a Service of Morning Prayer (Matins) in the church. Buses will transport pilgrims from Redeemer Church to Hollywood 20 Theater beginning at 6:30 AM. For more information, contact Doris R. Brodeur, dbrodeur@olmc-osprey.org, Triduum: Looking Back, Looking Forward Fr. George M. Smiga, STD, Give Us This Day, March 2018 Easter is more than remembering Jesus rising from the dead. It celebrates what Jesus resurrec on has begun: the transforma on of all crea on. Chris ans believe that it is God s inten on to destroy the evil of our world and establish a kingdom in which all that exists will conform to God s love. The reason that Jesus resurrec on is so important is because it is the first step in God s plan. Because Jesus has been raised up, we believe that all who live in Christ both living and dead will be raised up to a new kind of life. On Easter, then, we do not simply look back on what happened to Jesus. We also look forward to the kingdom to be established when every evil will be eliminated, even death, and God will be all in all (1 Cor 15:28). This mystery Jesus resurrec on leading to our resurrec on and a new crea on is the center of our faith. We call it the Paschal Mystery, the great ac on God began when Jesus was raised from the dead. We celebrate the Paschal Mystery with a Triduum (a period of three days): Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. How did these three days come to be our Easter celebra on? A look to history is helpful. A er the resurrec on of Jesus, the early Church eagerly awaited his return to complete the Paschal Mystery. Because Jesus rose on a Sunday, that day of the week became the Lord s Day. Chris ans gathered each week on Sunday and soon began to celebrate a meal in memory of Jesus. That meal, which con nues today as our Eucharist, looks back on Jesus resurrec on but also looks forward to his return. Every Eucharist celebrates Easter. Every Eucharist an cipates the ul mate comple on of the Paschal Mystery when Jesus establishes the Kingdom of God. Echoing Paul s words from 1 Corinthians 11:26, the Eucharis c Acclama on of our present liturgy perfectly expresses what we believe: When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, un l you come again. Early Chris ans believed that Jesus would return soon, in a ma er of months. But months turned into years, and years into decades. Believers then iden fied one Sunday from all the Sundays of the year that would mark the annual commemora on of Jesus resurrec on. That Sunday was solemnized by a night Vigil at which Chris ans gathered for Eucharist and awaited Jesus eventual return. It became the perfect occasion to bap ze those who wished to become Chris an. Once the yearly Vigil was in place, the days before it were used to commemorate further aspects of Jesus final days. By the 4 th century the Church in Jerusalem was celebra ng Jesus crucifixion on the Friday before the Vigil with the venera on of a relic of the cross, and on Thursday the Last Supper with an evening Eucharist. These celebra ons were eventually taken up by all Chris ans to form the three days we now call the Sacred Triduum. But it is the Easter Vigil that is first, both historically and in order of importance. It is not a vigil before Easter Sunday but the great feast of Easter itself. It is our yearly reminder of what we do every Sunday: gather to share the Eucharist, remember Jesus death and resurrec on, and await his return to transform our world. George M. Smiga, STD, pastor of St. Noel Church in Willoughby Hills, Ohio, teaches at St. Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology and is author of The Gospel of John Set Free. 6 Teaching Children about Holy Week YOUTH CORNER The story of Holy Week is not exactly family-friendly, but that doesn t mean you can skip the part about Jesus journey to the cross when sharing your faith with your children. It s important for parents and grandparents to share the whole story of Holy Week. If children are at Mass on Palm Sunday, and then not again until Easter Sunday, they may miss out on some important stories of our faith. Palm Sunday Donating Coats Holy Week begins with a celebration. On Palm Sunday, Jesus followers cheer him as he enters Jerusalem, laying their cloaks on the ground for Jesus donkey to walk on. You can use this story as an opportunity to serve. After telling your children about Palm Sunday, you can go with them to their closets to select coats and clothes they no longer need. Donate the clothes and teach children how giving to others is a way of giving to Jesus (see Matthew 25:31-40). Holy Thursday Water and Washing You can create moments in the home similar to the foot washing at church on Holy Thursday. You can do this at bath time, while washing the dishes, or watching rain fall. As the water makes everything clean, Jesus makes us clean and new through the forgiveness of our sins. Holy Thursday A Family Meal Dinner on Holy Thursday can also be a teaching moment. Share with your children how when Jesus gathered his disciples for that special meal, he told them he was excited to be with them before things got difficult (see Luke 22:15). Tell your children how much you enjoy eating dinner together. Remind them that they can come to you when things are hard, and that you and Jesus will always be there for them. Good Friday Acknowledging Sadness Sharing the painful and sad story of Good Friday with your children can be challenging. Talk about the day Jesus died, but don t focus on what people did to Jesus. Instead, focus on what Jesus was doing for them blessing the people and asking God to forgive them. Work very hard to be honest without being graphic. It is a good time to remind children that sometimes we feel sad, and that is OK. God is with us even in our sadness. Easter Sunday New Life After sharing the difficult story of Holy Week, your children will be ready to celebrate Easter with a new understanding. It s important that you also share the Resurrection story so that children are learning the whole story, that this is a story of God s amazing love for us. (With thanks to Joe Iovino, United Methodist Communications) Seven Last Words of Jesus Father, forgive them, they know not what they do. (Luke 23:34) Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. (Luke 23:43) Woman, behold, your son. Behold, your mother. (John 19:26-27) My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Ma hew 27:46; Mark 15:34) I thirst. (John 19:28) It is finished. (John 19:30) Father, into your hands I commend my spirit. (Luke 23:46)
