2 ORDINARY TIME the good, because all life came from God. It is forbidden, says the Talmud, to taste of this world without a blessing. But that is not news, is it? Not to anyone who has broken bread and li ed the cup at this altar, where we give thanks for the life, and death, and life of Jesus Christ. We do not bless the good parts here and curse the rest. No, whenever we gather for Eucharist, for thanksgiving, what we toast is the whole of our Lord s life, the defeats along with the victories, the gentle birth alongside the violent crucifixion, the sleepless night in Gethsemane alongside the empty tomb on Easter morning. Because in retrospect, in faith, we believe that it is all a single tapestry and the removal of a single thread diminishes the whole crea on. A Tapestry of Thanksgiving Barbara Brown Taylor, Give Us This Day, November 2018 Three thousand years ago the Jews formulated blessings berakoth for every circumstance of their lives. Come weal or woe, they had a blessing. If it were good news, then Blessed be he who is good and does good. If it were bad news, then Blessed be the judge of truth. As far as they were concerned, humankind had a duty to pronounce a blessing on the bad in life as well as Our challenge this Thanksgiving is to see our own lives the same way, to learn how to give thanks at this altar not only for the mixed blessings of Christ s life but also for our own, to say thank you for the whole mess, the things we welcome as well as the things we would risk our souls to escape. Barbara Brown Taylor is a bestselling author, professor, and Episcopal priest. Congratulations to Anne and Garth Henning on the elevation of their son, Richard Garth Henning, to the Episcopacy as Auxiliary Bishop of Rockville, NY. Please make a note. Thanksgiving Day Mass, Thursday, November 22nd will be celebrated at 9:30 AM. This will replace our usual 8:00 AM daily Mass.

4 Websites Worth Browsing ADULT FAITH ENRICHMENT JustFaith Ministries was birthed in the effort to invite and prepare people of faith for the life-changing and world-changing call of the Gospel to help heal the world and, in so doing, experience a deeper faith, a more fulfilling life, and a community of care and vitality. Mission JustFaith Ministries is a nonprofit organiza on that forms, informs, and transforms people of faith by offering programs and resources that sustain them in their compassionate commitment to build a more just and peaceful world. Vision JustFaith Ministries envisions a vast community of faithful people, transformed by the Spirit, and leading extraordinary lives of compassion. Since 2001, over 50,000 people have completed a JustFaith Ministries program. Transforma on JustFaith Ministries programs create an environment that invites personal transforma on. We change people and those people change the world. History One of the most fundamental insights of the Gospel, reinforced by the experience of human beings all over the planet, is that the fully human, fully alive person is someone who loves widely. To be whole, says Jesus, is to care not only about the most immediate rela onships family and friends, for example but to love beyond those with the same last name, same zip code, same flag, or same skin color. Wisdom and holiness, says our faith tradi on, is discovered in an ac ve love that embraces all, especially those who have been exploited, impoverished, and abandoned. God s love and God s world were meant to be shared by all! The programs of JustFaith Ministries (JFM), which started with the original JustFaith process and now include an array of offerings, including Engaging Spirituality, GoodNewsPeople, Jus cewalking and the JustMa ers modules, were all cra ed with the intent of providing people a substan al opportunity to explore the link between their faith in God and their care of their neighbor. In many ways, JFM is an invita on to wrestle with Ma hew 25 ( Whatever you do to the least, you do to me ), surrounded by fellow travelers, a commitment to prayer, compelling learning tools, and opportuni es to form rela onships with sisters and brothers whose lives have known struggle and suffering. Jack Jeezreel, Founder of Just Faith Ministries A GUIDED TOUR THROUGH CATHOLIC MORAL TRADITIONS Fr. Fred Tillotson, O.Carm., S.T.L., M.A. Tuesday, November 20 10:30 AM 12:00 PM, Rooms 4 and 6 In this final session, we will con nue to trace the historical development of the Church s teachings on morality from biblical and patris c mes through the Middle Ages to the thought of Va can II. We will define right and wrong, sin and death, laws and freedom, conscience and free will, and address contemporary issues in light of Catholic moral tradi ons. Community Outreach Ministry: The Center of Hope Next weekend, November 24 and 25, OLMC will collect personal hygiene items to be distributed by The Center of Hope of South County. There will also be a covered box at the desk to receive any cash (or check) dona ons. Please note that we are collec ng personal hygiene items only. Food dona ons con nue to be collected for Immokalee on the 2 nd Sunday of each month. Collec ons for the Center of Hope will be on the 4 th Sunday of each month. Used clothing and shoes should be brought directly to the Center in Venice, and NOT to the church. 5 Gratitude 101 Bishop Robert F. Morneau, Give Us This Day, November 2018 Our God is a gi -giver. We are recipients of God s incredible benevolence. Bearing this in mind, the ancient psalmist raised a fundamental ques on that never goes away: How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? (Psalm 116:12). Struggling with this challenging ques on, St. John Paul II wrote: Can I ever repay my gra tude to the sea whose quiet waves come out to seek me as I am led astray, day a er day? and to the sun, for not spurning me, its journey done, and for keeping evening and dawn not far apart? Ques ons that spring from a grateful heart. Try as we might, we can never make sufficient repayment for the gi s of God great and small. The best we can do is to develop a spirit of gra tude that overflows in generosity to others. Some people learn gra tude too late, Flannery O Connor writes in one of her short stories, and some never learn it at all. Blessed is the child who, while not yet ten, is trained to write notes of thank you for gi s given. Gra tude is a discipline, demanding explicit effort and constancy. If our educa on has not included Gra tude LIVING OUR FAITH 101, we have been short-changed. One way to acknowledge God s gi s is in words, whether wri en or spoken. But more is required: We must nurture and share the gi s given, become the gi. This is the point of every Eucharist, our central moment of thanksgiving. We gather as a community to express our gra tude for the mysteries of crea on, redemp on, and sanc fica on. In the Eucharist we break open the Scriptures and come to know Jesus as we break the bread. We then share what we have received in Word and Sacrament. Gra tude 101 over and over. When Mass was celebrated in La n, the liturgy ended with the celebrant exclaiming: Ite, Missa est (Go, the Mass is ended). The congrega on responded: Deo gra as (Thanks be to God). Those two li le words Deo gra as are inscribed on Dorothy Day s headstone. And they should be ta ooed on our heart, so that our stony, hard heart will be removed and our inner spirit will be transformed (Ezekiel 36:24-28). Thanksgiving is not reserved for the celebra on of the Paschal Mystery, or for one day out of the year. Thanks be to God for the fresh morning muffin, the smile from a stranger, the unexpected note from a friend and, yes, even the hardships of life that challenge us to embrace our cross as Jesus and Mary did. Indeed, our suffering can be a great blessing. Perhaps as we celebrate Thanksgiving once again, we might offer this prayer un l our request is granted: Lord, give me a heart of generosity, that I may emulate Thee, a heart of compassion, that I may cry with Thee, a heart of hospitality, that I may welcome Thee, and, yes, a GRATEFUL HEART, that I may thank Thee. Robert F. Morneau is the auxiliary bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Thanksgiving Dinner Deacon Tom and Patti Grant, and Fr. Fred will be hosting our Thanksgiving Dinner again this year. The dinner will be held in Mt. Carmel Hall on Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd. Doors open at 1:00 PM for all those folks who might otherwise be spending Thanksgiving alone. Sunday, November 18th is the last day to sign up at the desk. Share your good fortune on Turkey Day Please share your good fortune and your good food! We need prepared traditional Thanksgiving dishes for the Mount Carmel Hall Thanksgiving Dinner being held for those who might otherwise be alone. There is a sign up sheet at the reception desk with suggested traditional Thanksgiving dishes. Please pick your favorite dish from the list and bring it to the Hall between 11:00 AM and 12:30 PM.

6 YOUTH CORNER 5 Ways to Teach Kids Thanksgiving Gratitude Based on Here are 5 Thanksgiving ideas for kids focused on the real meaning of Thanksgiving that you might try over the next few weeks. Make a Thankfulness Jar Have each family member fill in a slip of paper for each of the things they are grateful for this year. Reading these notes would make for a great beginning or end to the big Thanksgiving feast. To make this more of a group craft, you could have your child cut and fold the paper or decorate the jar. Source: therealisticmama.com Volunteer for and visit those in need There are countless people across the country who are less fortunate and who won t get to visit family nor put a hot meal on their table this year. Instill the meaning of gratitude by volunteering your time at a community center or local soup kitchen. Or find an older person in your community who is alone and deliver them a turkey or even just pay them a friendly visit. You ll be so happy you did and your kids will never forget the experience. Forego one luxury for a week Maybe the best way to encourage Thanksgiving gratitude for our everyday blessings is to go without a luxury for a few days, e.g., a smartphone or computer. Skip the after-school cartoons or wait a week to dig into the tub of ice cream in the freezer. You and your family will be even more appreciative of these little luxuries after the week is up! Encourage your kids to help around the house Encourage them to share more in household chores. Thanksgiving can be a great time for encouraging this kind of involvement. Have your children help with setting the table or taking guests coats. Even the smallest gestures can help you instill the principle that it feels good to help others. Involve your kids in the big Thanksgiving meal In addition to getting your children to help out with household chores, have your children play a key role in the preparation of the big Thanksgiving meal. Have them snap the beans, mix the cornbread, or stuff the turkey with your family s favorite stuffing. When kids get involved like this and feel a sense of ownership, the occasion becomes more meaningful for them. And again, the next time you put a meal on the table in front of them, they will have a greater sense of what went into it. Happy Thanksgiving! THE GIVING TREE The Giving Tree Ministry provides OLMC parishioners an opportunity to share their blessings at Christmas time. Once again your generosity is needed for homeless and migrant families. There are special needs again this year for strollers with baskets and Pack n Plays (a bed and playpen combination). These items are a tremendous help for the working families who travel with their jobs. They are available at Walmart and other discount big box stores. They arrive boxed and may be a problem to bring to Church. If so, the Knights of Columbus will be glad to pick them up at your home. Please call Susan Kelley at to arrange for a pick up. The Christmas Giving Tree will be placed in the narthex beginning Saturday, November 24th. The last day to place gifts under the tree will be Sunday, December 16th. Our gifts for the Giving Tree will support the Guadalupe Catholic Social Services of Immokalee.
