All of us. Period. Jesus Commissioning the Twelve Apostles, Ghirlandaio, 1481 The Crux of the Call Heidi Cerneka, Give Us This Day, July 2018 Jesus sent out his apostles to expel unclean spirits. We can have a whole discussion about what some of the unclean spirits might be today. However, that is not the crux of his message, I believe. Jesus did not tell his apostles to walk only during the day (and we know Bible stories about robbers, murderers, and foreigners being a acked because they are not welcomed in strange lands, so we cannot suggest that there was no risk in their me). Jesus did not tell his apostles to go armed for protec on, or to take their bank cards in case they needed to stay at an inn, or needed money. He said, Take nothing for your journey. Trust was his Are we all called to leave everything behind but the clothes on our backs, with not even an extra pair of shoes? (What if it rains?) Probably not. But I hear Jesus saying, Get out of your comfort zone and be a neighbor. Get involved with your neighbors, and your brothers and sisters. I believe that each of us can do that we need to listen in prayer and to our community members and loved ones to know what God is calling us to do. Rather, God draws us to himself, taking into account the complex fabric of interpersonal rela onships present in a human community. God wanted to enter into the life and history of a people. Sacred Sauntering and Holy Lollygagging Sr. Genevieve Glen, OSB, Sauntering Through Scripture There you have it: the cloud of suspicion that has hung over sauntering and lollygagging for years, and not just among the parents of teenagers. But it s me to cry foul when they become the criteria by which we define and judge the human spirit according to the two great commandments: Be produc ve! Be useful! Jesus, unburdened by weekly organizers with handy to-do lists, did both. Although totally devoted to the staggering goal of redeeming a bent and broken world, he wasted me apprecia ng the gorgeous field anemones, watching what it took to bake bread or plant a field, hanging out with tax collectors, lepers, pros tutes and Pharisees. And, because a great storyteller doesn t start from scratch, he listened to tales (and gossip) about all sorts of ordinary things: a fight over an inheritance, someone s prodigal International Dinner-Italian Night child, a local widow pestering a judge into giving her what she wanted. All the while he was discovering, savoring, and cherishing the world as humans experience it. We ve all done some of that, haven t we? Childless myself, I treasure the memory of holding a friend s five-month-old in my lap while his mom cleaned house. He was going nowhere, and neither was I, so we just sat together watching sunbeams, laughing at the family dog, rearranging salt and pepper shakers, and drinking in the goodness of life. Another me, in early morning, I stood dumbstruck by an en re sky on fire as the sun rose through clouds while me went on strike. I have no idea what the second coming of Christ in clouds of glory will really look like, but I ll never forget the preview. These are only two of many brief, unplanned, mini-vaca ons that have taught me about discovering, savoring, and cherishing my world in company with a child, or my God. It s summer. Do yourself a favor. Put away the day planners, schedules and to-do lists. Ignore the disapproving voices in your head. Take a vaca on. Vaca on comes from the La n vacare, meaning to empty out, to be idle. Old spiritual writers spoke of vacare Deo, making space for God. It suggests just hanging out together rather than following a prepared prayer strategy. Forget the goal of ge ng through the Bible in a year and just go sauntering with God in the enchan ng, instruc ve, transforma ve landscapes and stories of Scripture, with the Spirit in the lead. Go any me. No advance planning required! Find a spot you like? Just lollygag around in it for a while. Stay as long as you like there s no checkout me. Hundreds of years later, a group of European monks who had a special devotion to Mother Mary began to live on Mount Carmel. They were called friars of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel.

6 YOUTH CORNER Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel July 16 Mount Carmel is a mountain overlooking the plain of Galilee. It became famous when the prophet Elijah, who lived many years before Jesus, was born. Chapter 18 of the Bible's First Book of Kings tells how Elijah stood up to the 450 prophets of the false god Baal. Through his prayers, God gave Elijah the power to perform a miracle to prove that Elijah's God was the true God. This happened on Mount Carmel. Hundreds of years later, a group of European monks who had a special devotion to Mother Mary began to live on Mount Carmel. They were called friars of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. This was the start of the Carmelite Order, which was approved by Pope Honorius III. Simon Stock, an Englishman, became the superior of the Carmelites. He helped the Order to grow following the example of the Dominicans and Franciscans. When they began to suffer harassment for their faith, they turned to Mary for help. On July 16, 1251, Mary appeared to St. Simon and gave him the brown scapular. She promised her protection to all those who would wear the blessed habit. Many miracles proved her words. St. Pope Pius X said that people could have the same blessings if they would wear the scapular medal. This medal has a picture of Our Lady of the Scapular on one side and the Sacred Heart on the other. See In honor of the great Spanish Carmelite saints, St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, we will celebrate Mary s feast day this year with a traditional Spanish paella.
