2 ADVENT O! Columba Stewart, OSB, Give Us This Day, December 2017 The Chris an imagina on feeds on symbol and mystery. We talk about the Word of God, but what we really mean is the power of biblical words to conjure an image or story so vivid that it can change lives. The prophets knew that their mission was not to describe their own experience of God but to catch the a en on of their hearers. Some mes they yelled, some mes they comforted, some mes they dreamed. They always used images, knowing that the human heart is like a flint: strike it just right and you can start a fire. Isaiah was the master of the perfectly aimed strike at the heart. We listen to Isaiah throughout Advent, running the gamut from chas sement to comfort, piling up imagery throughout all 66 chapters. There is so much of it that many biblical scholars think there were at least two authors. He (they) never flinched from suffering but could always see beyond it. He took in the whole story of Israel s trials and glimpsed a future redemp on. It is no surprise that early Chris ans recognized in Isaiah a key to reading the rest of the Hebrew Bible. What Shakespeare was to the English language, Isaiah became for the liturgy, filling it with indelible word pictures and hope. Isaiah rules Advent, especially so in its final week and the countdown to the Na vity. During those days both Evening Prayer and the Eucharist feature a set of poe c verses cra ed in the earliest centuries of the Western Church, verses drawn from Isaiah s key symbols for God s salvific work. Known as the O An phons from the opening word in each La n text, they invoke an image, briefly expand on it, and end with the invoca on come and... The series is a catechism in miniature, opening with crea on (O Wisdom) and working toward its fulfillment in Christ. Day by day we sing of the key moments in Israel s love affair with God: their recogni on of the Lord who had chosen them (O Adonai/ Lord, Leader of the House of Israel), the blessing of kingship (O Root of Jesse, O Key of David), and the hope of a new anointed one, a ruler for all peoples, whose glory would rise like the dawn (O Morning Star, O King of the Na ons). This would be no earthly king, but God-with-us (O Emmanuel). The familiar hymn O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, as beau ful as it may be, is no match for the original music composed for the La n text (this is besides pu ng the last image first and messing up the sequence). When sung according to the tradi onal melody, the opening invoca on of O is a crooning set -up for the highlighted image. It was the medieval version of the way Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan would start a song with a nonverbal swoop of notes, se ng the tone for what was to come. The melodies are haun ngly beau ful, plain ve in their longing and tender in adora on. The O An phons also work as medita ve devo ons, a lec o divina as packed and savory as a bouillon cube. Linger over the image of the day. Ponder its meaning both for our common faith and for your own life. Pray a hear elt wish that Christ will indeed come again, he who is Emmanuel, God-with-us. Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers Immokalee Food Drive We had a wonderful collection for the Immokalee Food Drive. Thanks to your generosity, a great amount of food and a generous monetary donation of $ were delivered. The next collection will be held on the 13th & 14th of January. Grocery bags will be distributed at all Masses on the 6th and 7th of January. The Center of Hope Monthly Collection of Personal Hygiene Items Next weekend, December 23 and 24 (Fourth Sunday of Advent), OLMC will collect personal hygiene items to be distributed by The Center of Hope of South County. There will be a covered box at the desk to receive any cash (or check) donations. OLMC RUMMAGE SALE Mark your calendars and save your treasures for the upcoming OLMC rummage sale. The sale is February 23rd & 24th at Mt. Carmel Parish Hall. We are accepting gently used items for the sale now during parish business hours. The essence of the story is the same, but the author has added some imaginary cultural elements to emphasize that God s love knows no bounds and no borders. Jesus came to tell the whole world that his Father's love is for all children on earth whether from the Americas, Asia, Africa, Europe, or Oceania.
