2 EASTER TIME made with his friends, in order to be available for everybody. In Jesus, the future has already begun! In the Acts of the Apostles, his disciples are given a last bit of instruction. Don t keep trying to stare into the future. Don t be overly concerned about which hour he will come back. We must not stand idly staring up into the heavens and moaning about the past, about which we can do nothing, except to bury it deeply in God s hands and heart! The Lord will be glorified, and it follows that his disciples will also share in his glory. The Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ Giotto di Bondone, 1305 Carry a Piece of Heaven Fr. Thomas Rosica, OSB As Jesus disappeared, He didn t simply dissolve into thin air. On the day of his Ascension, one might conclude that Jesus removed Himself into a new form of divine exclusion. The case is exactly the opposite. In God, Jesus is here in a new and very specific way. Only in his physical separation from the historical scene can his spiritual union with all the world for all time be complete. Jesus left the world one day in order to be available to all people throughout all time. He had to dissolve bonds He had Let s get going and carry a piece of heaven into the world. This is the meaning of the Resurrection and the Ascension of our Lord, not one of divine abandonment of the human cause, but divine empowerment of the Gospel dream! May Christ s dying and rising move us to make God s glory dwell on earth. May our hope for the future inspire us in a respect for the present moment. May the desire for the heavenly realities not make us neglect our work on earth. Thomas Rosica, CSB, is a Canadian Catholic priest of the Congregation of St. Basil. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Canada s Catholic Salt and Light Television network. Into your hands O Lord, we commend the souls of our recently departed. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Books of Interest Cuéntame: Narra ve in the Ecclesial Present By Natalia Imperatori-Lee (Orbis, 2018) Interweaving church history from the margins, art, literature, popular religiosity, demographic analysis, and stories drawn from the sacredness of everyday life (lo co diano) with keen ecclesiological reflec on and insight, Natalia Imperatori-Lee points a way forward for a genuine dialogue about the nature and mission of the Church in the third millennium. Mary Catherine Hilkert, OP, University of Notre Dame If a people is known by the stories it tells, so too is a church. Since its incep on in the mid-1970s, La no/a theology has redefined no ons of personhood and rela onship, culture and interculturality, and no ons of the divine itself. However, a coherent, systema c Catholic ecclesiology has yet to be elaborated from a La no/a perspec ve. This book undertakes that systemiza on in a mul disciplinary way, drawing upon La n American and U.S. Hispanic literature as well as theological reflec on, to devise an ecclesiology shaped by narra ve. The author analyzes a variety of narra ves fic on, history, religious rituals, demographic studies to find viable star ng points for systema zing the story of the Church, which is ul mately what ecclesiology seeks to do. This book is available in the OLMC Library. Natalia Imperatori-Lee is associate professor of religious studies at Manha an College, NY, where she teaches in the areas of contemporary Catholicism, U.S. La no/a Theology, and gender studies. Free in the Pamphlet Rack Mee ng Mary in Scripture Published by Our Sunday Visitor Mary is referred to 137 times in the New Testament. She is in all the Gospels and in the Acts of the Apostles. For Catholics, devotion to Mary is part of our heritage and the life of our faith. The sacred Scriptures remind us that Mary s acceptance of God s activity in her life is exemplary and serves as a model for all of us. This pamphlet offers insight into Mary as a Jewish woman, a peasant woman, a woman of faith, the Mother of God, and as a model disciple. Reflection questions are incorporated throughout to help us meditate on how we can respond to God s call.

5 LIVING OUR FAITH The Works of Mercy (An occasional series in which Pope Francis speaks about the corporal and spiritual works of mercy) Burying the Dead An Act of Compassion and of Faith Pope Francis, General Audience, St. Peter s Square, November 30, 2016 The last corporal work of mercy calls us to bury the dead. This may seem a curious request, although, in certain regions of the world that are living under the scourge of war, with bombings day and night sowing fear and claiming innocent vic ms, sadly this work is mely. The Bible gives a fine example in this regard: that of the elderly Tobit, who, risking his life, would go out to bury the dead in spite of the king s prohibi on (cf. Tobit 1:17-19, 2:2-4). Today too, there are those who risk their lives to bury unfortunate vic ms of war. Thus, this corporal work of mercy is not far from our daily existence. It makes us ponder what happened on Good Friday, when the Virgin Mary, John, and several women were near Jesus cross. A er the death of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea a rich member of the Sanhedrin who had become a follower of Jesus came and offered his own tomb, newly hewn out of the rock, for Jesus. He personally went to Pilate and asked for Jesus body: a true work of mercy performed with great courage (cf. Ma hew 27:57-60). For Chris ans, burial is an act of compassion, but also an act of great faith. We bury the bodies of our loved ones, in the hope of their resurrec on (Cf. 1 Corinthians 15:11-34). This a rite that endures among, and is meaningful for, our people, and that has a special resonance in the month of November, which is dedicated in par cular to prayer for the departed. 6 YOUTH CORNER Mothers Day in the United States Based on Celebrations and Holidays Theme, kiddyhouse.com History of Mothers Day It was through the efforts of Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis that President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mothers Day in 1914, as a national observance to be held each year on the Second Sunday of May. In 1870, Julia Ward Howe was very distraught by the death and suffering of the Civil War. She called on all mothers to come together to protest the killings. Howe called for an international Mothers Day to celebrate peace and motherhood, and made an impassioned appeal to womanhood to rise up against war. She went on to generate a powerful plea that same year in Boston, MA, which was considered by many to be the original Mothers Day proclamation. As early as 1858, Ann Marie Reeves-Jarvis had tried to improve sanitation through what she called Mothers Friendship Day. In the years after the end of the Civil War, Ann was instrumental in saving the lives of thousands by teaching women in her Mothers Friendship Clubs the basics of nursing and sanitation. It was essentially Ann s daughter, Anna Jarvis, who eventually succeeded in the introduction of the Mothers Day celebrations that we know today. Her mother died in 1905, and two years later Anna Jarvis persuaded her mother s church in Grafton, West Virginia, to celebrate Mothers Day on the anniversary of her mother s death. She and others began writing letters to businessmen, ministers and politicians to get Mothers Day established. Anna handed out white carnations, her mother s favorite flower, at one of the first services organized to celebrate her mother s life. Symbol of Mothers Day The while carnation became the symbol of Mothers Day. It is now worn as an emblem of purity, strength, and endurance for motherhood. Its whiteness stands for purity. Its lasting qualities stand for faithfulness. Its fragrance stands for love. Its wide field of growth stands for charity. Its form/shape stands for beauty. Today, Mothers Day is a day honoring mothers. It is a day to acknowledge your mother s contribu on in your life and pay a tribute to her, o en with flowers and gi s. But of course, we should not need a special day once a year to do this. We can and should thank our loving, caring mothers every day, and do things for her every day, not just on Mothers Day. Things You Can Do to Honor Your Mother Do something she likes together. Spend a whole day with her. Give her a jar with several coupons of things you will do for her. Prepare dinner for her with lovely table se ngs and food. Take me to make a special card telling her why she is special and why you love her. Write a special poem for her. Make her a special breakfast in bed.
