This key passage in today s reading from Deuteronomy is known as the Shema. It was prayed by prac cing Jews three mes a day. The commandment to love one s neighbor is taken from the book of Levi cus (19:18). Both commandments would have been well known to faithful Jews of the me. What is dis nc ve in Jesus teaching is the linkage of these two commandments, insis ng that love of God and love of neighbor are, as it were, two sides of the same coin. The inseparability of the two commandments is found elsewhere, achieving its most profound form in the Johannine tradi on, where we are told anyone who says I love God but hates his brother is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen (1 John 4:20). It is easy to miss the radical character of this double commandment. What we encounter here is not merely a moral impera ve: if one loves God one ought to love one s neighbor. No, here Jesus makes a more basic claim: one cannot love God and not love one s neighbor, since the love of God is realized, in large part, precisely in one s love of neighbor. This double commandment binds together the life of worship and our daily conduct toward others, and it shines a harsh light on any false piety divorced from our care for others. (Liturgical Press) Comfor ng the Sorrowful James Mar n, SJ, Give Us This Day, November 2018 November is a month when many Catholics think about the dead. Does that sound morbid? It needn t be. Recalling the life of a beloved family member, long me friend, or trusted mentor can be consoling, especially if that person has led a rich and full life. But for most people thinking about the dead evokes sadness, par cularly if the death was recent or un mely. That awareness should remind us of the need not only to pray for the dead, but also to pray for those who survive them. Comfor ng the sorrowful is one of the tradi onal spiritual works of mercy. Part of that comfort includes praying for the person who is grieving. But there are other ways to help as well. O en we may want to help someone who has lost a loved one but feel paralyzed by the fear of saying the wrong thing. We may have heard stories of otherwise well-meaning people who want to comfort and say things like, It s all for the best. Or, He s in a be er place. Or, I know just how you feel. Which some mes makes people feel worse. The most comfor ng thing we can do for someone grieving a loss may be to be physically present and simply listen to them. In general, you needn t worry too much about saying the right or wrong thing. Just try to consider the situa on, speak from your heart, and do your best. The story/ reflec ons are accompanied by artwork created by an immigrant youth and her brother, along with prayers wri en by Jesuit Father Leo O Donovan. Sco Rose helps immigrant children as a Catholic deacon and volunteer a orney with Esperanza Center. He is also the CEO of a non-profit community mental health organiza on. Leo J. O Donovan, SJ, is Director of Mission for Jesuit Refugee Service/USA and former president of Georgetown University, Washington, DC (1989 to 2001). ) Here are some things you can do to help a child who has lost a loved one (or beloved pet): When talking about death, use simple, clear words.

How kids cope with the loss depends on things like their age, how close they felt to the person who died, and the support they receive. (These guidelines extend to the loss of a pet, as well.) Here are some things you can do to help a child who has lost a loved one (or beloved pet): When talking about death, use simple, clear words. To break the news that someone has died, approach your child in a caring way. Use words that are simple and direct. For example, "I have some sad news to tell you. Grandma died today." Pause to give your child a moment to take in your words. Listen and comfort. Every child reacts differently to learning that a loved one has died. Some kids cry. Some ask questions. Others seem not to react at all. That's OK. Stay with your child to offer hugs or reassurance. Tell your child what to expect. If the death of a loved one means changes in your child's life, head off any worries or fears by explaining what will happen. For example, "Aunt Sara will pick you up from school like Grandma used to." Talk about funerals and rituals. Allow children to join in rituals like viewings, funerals, or memorial services. Tell your child ahead of time what will happen. For example, "Lots of people who loved Grandma will be there. We will sing, pray, and talk about Grandma's life. People might cry and hug. People will say things like, 'I'm sorry for your loss,' or, 'My condolences.' We can say, 'Thank you,' or, 'Thanks for coming.' You can stay near me and hold my hand if you want." Give your child a role. Having a small, active role can help kids master an unfamiliar and emotional situation such as a funeral or memorial service. For example, you might invite your child to read a poem, pick a song to be played, gather some photos to display, or make something. Let kids decide if they want to take part, and how. Give your child time to heal from the loss. Grief is a process that happens over time. Be sure to have ongoing conversations to see how your child is feeling and doing. Healing doesn't mean forgetting about the loved one. It means remembering the person with love, and letting loving memories stir good feelings that support us as we go on to enjoy life.
