2 ORDINARY TIME Newness of Life Excerpt from John W. Martens, The Word on the Street (Liturgical Press, 2016) God is the author of life. As the psalmist hymns, The heavens are yours, the earth also is yours; / the world and all that is in it you have founded them. God s authorship of life, however, does not contradict the natural life processes, which occur at both a micro and macro level, whether in evolu onary developments, the Big Bang, or the emergence of new individual beings. Catholics accept the scien fic underpinnings of life, yet understand that the crea ve processes that came into existence billions of years ago and began to evolve into the species we have today are the result of the Creator from whom the origins of life stem. Throughout the Old Testament, God s crea ve capaci es were understood to undergird the gi of human life, even though women and men in an quity were aware of the natural processes of how children came into existence. But they also believed that God could intervene in the natural processes of life. One example is found in the story of Elisha and the wealthy woman of Shunem, who cared for Elisha when he passed through their city. Elisha wanted to thank her for her hospitality for him and his servant Gehazi and said, Since you have taken all this trouble for us, what may be done for you? She did not ask for anything. In fact, it was Gehazi who pointed out that her husband was old and she did not yet have a son. Elisha promised her that next year you shall embrace a son. The Shunammite woman could hardly believe Elisha s words, saying, No, my lord, O man of God; do not deceive your servant. As the story con nues, though, we find that not only did God intercede to give her a son, but that this son died while s ll a child. Elisha, however, went to the dead child and through God s intercession brought him back to life (2 Kgs 4:17-37). As we see in this story, God s ability to create new life is a given, as is God s ability to restore life, since death does not impact the power of the living God. But what are we to make of the gi of our lives and how are we to live to ensure that we live with God forever? Jesus tells us that a life worth living is a life dedicated to the living God. For Jesus this is placed in the language of discipleship, of taking up the cross to be worthy of Jesus friendship and companionship. Not only the language of taking up the cross is a hard saying, but so is Jesus demand that discipleship takes precedence even over one s birth family. Jesus makes the surprising claim that anyone who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. In place of the birth family, Jesus subs tutes love of his disciples, the li le ones, and all those in need, as a new family. For Jesus says that those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. In loving God and the people of God, comprising all of those in need, we find our life in its fullness and newness. It was when the Shunammite woman cared for Elisha without thought of reward that the reward in the form of new life was offered to her. Some think that talk of reward sullies the purity of the religious life. Jesus asks us to care for those in need, without thinking what we might gain from them, but he does not shy away from speaking of a reward. That reward is new life with God, both in this world and in the world to come. Q. How does it feel to know that God wants you to have life for eternity? Q. How do you imagine eternal life? Q. What does it mean to walk in newness of life today?

4 LIVING OUR FAITH Witnesses for Our Time Elie Wiesel Nobel Laureate and Witness ( ) He is remembered on July 4. There may be mes when we are powerless to prevent injus ce, but there must never be a me when we fail to protest. Elie Wiesel was born in the village of Sighet in Transylvania. At fi een, he and his family were deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz, where his mother and younger sister died. He and his father were later transferred to Buchenwald, where his father was beaten to death shortly before the camp s libera on in April Following the war, Wiesel moved to Paris, where he studied literature and philosophy, and found work as a journalist. An interview with the renowned Catholic novelist François Mauriac, who urged him to tell his own story, proved a turning point in his life. The result was his searing memoir, Night, one of the great moral documents of the twen eth century. Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, he wrote. Never shall I forget that smoke.... Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever. He lived on to bear witness, to remember the dead, and to denounce ongoing viola ons of human rights. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and numerous other honors. But he carried an intolerable burden: Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. He was determined that the world never forget what he was condemned to remember. Elie Wiesel died on July 2, Independence Day Celebration This Is My Song This is My Song (#622 in Breaking Bread 2017) is a 1934 hymn written by Lloyd Stone ( ) using the Finlandia Hymn melody composed by Jean Sibelius ( ). It often appears in hymnals with substituted and additional verses by various composers, including Georgia Harkness ( ). It is sometimes called A Song of Peace, which is taken from the second line of the song. This is my song, O God of all the nations, A song of peace for lands afar and mine. This is my home, the country where my heart is; Here are my hopes, my dreams, my sacred shrine. But other hearts in other lands are beating, With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine. My country s skies are bluer than the ocean, And sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine. But other lands have sunlight too, and clover, And skies are everywhere as blue as mine. O hear my song, O God of all the nations, A song of peace for their land and for mine. For an uplifting and inspirational performance of This Is My Song, go to THE POPE'S INTENTION FOR JULY Lapsed Christians There s nothing ordinary about it That our brothers and sisters who have strayed from the faith, through our prayer and witness to the Gospel, may rediscover the merciful closeness of the Lord and the beauty of the Christian life.

5 LIVING OUR FAITH Our Patron Saint Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order. The first Carmelites were Christian hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the late 12 th and early-to-mid-13th century. They built in the midst of their hermitages a chapel, which they dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, whom they conceived of in chivalric terms as the "Lady of the Place." Our Lady of Mount Carmel was adopted in the 19th century as the patron saint of Chile. Since the 15th century, popular devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel has centered on the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, also known as the Brown Scapular, a sacramental associated with promises of Mary's special aid for the salvation of the devoted wearer. Traditionally, Mary is said to have given the Scapular to an early Carmelite named Saint Simon Stock. We celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on July 16th. Note: You can purchase a Brown Scapular at the front desk for $5. Celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel! Join us Sunday, July 16th, at 3:30 PM in Mt. Carmel Hall for a delicious baked ziti dinner. Hors d oeuvres, Caesar salad and dessert included. BYOB Sign-up sheets at the front desk. $5.00 per person to reserve a space. Free in the Pamphlet Rack On Care for Our Common Home (Laudato Si ) Pope Francis (Our Daily Visitor, 2015) The Church is likewise conscious of the responsibility which all of us have for our world, for the whole of creation, which we must love and protect. Our Sunday Visitor's new pamphlet, in response to Pope Francis' release of his encyclical Laudato Si', outlines the encyclical s main points, breaking it down so Catholics can understand it, and takes an unbiased look at what Pope Francis is calling us as a Church to do. Laudato Si (Praise Be!) takes its name from St. Francis of Assisi s famous Canticle of the Creatures, which begins: Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with colored flowers and herbs. The encyclical is developed along the idea of an integral ecology that addresses the fundamental relationships each of us has with God, oneself, our fellow human beings, and with our planet. A Prayer Affirming Life God, you are the Lord and Creator of life, You have blessed men and women With the privilege Of bringing new life into the world. You have imparted in our hearts the desire to nurture and protect life at all its stages. We accept these gifts as a sacred trust. Through the power of the Holy Spirit Help us to affirm the value of life. Grant us the wisdom and courage to speak out and defend human life. Give us compassion So that we may lovingly counsel Those who would reject the gift of life, Which is the reflection Of your image and likeness. Amen.

6 YOUTH CORNER Hi! Happy Fourth of July weekend! I hope you're gathered around a big picnic table with family and friends this holiday. Speaking of being gathered around the table, we just celebrated the feast of Corpus Christi (the Body of the Lord in the Eucharist). Jesus chose to give us this gift of himself in the context of a festive, family meal. Remembering the feast of Corpus Christi and getting ready for the Fourth of July, reminded me of an article, "Family: Feast of Love" I just read by Teresa Pirola. She says that a family meal is more than just a feed. "It's a time when we, as family members of whatever age or state in life, deepen our love for each other. We eat together not just to nourish our bodies, but to nourish our relationship as a family. We "feed" each other by spending time together, listening to one another, praying "thanks" for our blessings and sharing in the preparation of a meal." She goes on to say, "A family meal doesn't have to be elaborate. It doesn't have to be perfect or done a certain way. It just has to be a sincere attempt to say: I love you, we belong, we believe. Above all, family meals need to be a priority. Not just for families with young children, but for all of us. And not just on special occasions, but on the ordinary days as well. As I read Teresa's words about family meals, I asked myself the question, What makes the difference between a family feed and a family meal? For me, the simple act of inviting God to our table and our conversation, by saying a prayer together before the meal, is the difference. Teresa agreed, "Grace before meals is one of the simplest ways for a family to pray together. Usually it is a short prayer giving thanks for the meal. However, saying grace does more than thank God; it invites God to be present during your meal." In this way, our every day meals can begin to become more like the Table of the Lord and a foretaste of the heavenly banquet! Perhaps next time we sit down to a meal, we can each ask ourselves are we feeding our faces or feeding our souls? Help us to continue a good work begun long ago. Independence Day Prayer God, source of all freedom, This day is bright with the memory of those who declared that life and liberty are your gift to every human being. Make our vision clear and our will strong: that only in human solidarity will we find liberty, and justice only in the honor that belongs to every life on earth. Turn our hearts toward the family of nations: to understand the ways of others, to offer friendship, and to find safety only in the common good of all. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. - Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers
