2 THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION Confirmation is one of the Sacraments of initiation into the Church, together with Baptism and Eucharist. Confirmation completes the face of Baptism by a special outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which seal or confirm the baptized in union with Christ. Confirmation equips the confirmed for active participation in the worship and apostolic life of the church. (CCC 1284). THE CONFIRMATION RITE The Confirmation Rite is the ceremony by which a Bishop, or Priest delegated by the Bishop, confers the Sacrament of Confirmation on a baptized person. After invoking the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the Bishop extends his hands over the whole group of confirmands as a symbol of the coming of the Spirit. Then he traces a cross on the person s forehead with the blessed oil, called Chrism. At the same time, he calls the person by his name (either baptismal or Confirmation name) and says, Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. The sing of peace concludes the rite and demonstrates communion with the bishop and with all the faithful when he says, Peace be with you. (CCC ). 2

5 PRAYERS YOU NEED TO KNOW THE ANGELUS V. The angel spoke God s message to Mary R. and she conceived of the Holy Spirit V. I am the lowly servant of the Lord: R. let it be done to me according to your word. Hail Mary. V. And the Word became flesh R. and lived among us. Hail Mary. V. Pray for us, holy Mother of God, R. that we may become worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray Lord, fill our hearts with your grace: Once, through the message of an angel You revealed to us the incarnation of your Son; Now, through His suffering and death Lead us to the glory of His Resurrection. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. MEMORARE Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection Implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother. To you I come; before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, Despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen. ST. AUGUSTINE S PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy; Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy; Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy; Guard me, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen. GLORIA Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth. Lord God, Heavenly King, Almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father. Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: Receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, In the glory of God the Father. Amen. 5 AN ACT OF FAITH O my God, I firmly believe that you are one God in three divine persons: Father, son and Holy Spirit. I believe that your divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the holy Catholic Church teaches. Because you revealed them, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. Amen. AN ACT OF HOPE O my God, relying on your infinite goodness and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of your grace, and life everlasting through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen. AN ACT OF LOVE O my God, I love you above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because you are all-good and worthy of all my love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of you. I forgive all who have injured me, And I ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Amen. MORNING OFFERING O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day in union with the holy sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the Intentions of your Sacred Heart: the salvation of the souls, reparation for sin, the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our bishops And of all members of the Apostleship of Prayer, And in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father this month. Amen. GRACE BEFORE MEALS Bless us, O Lord, And these your gifts which we are about to receive from your bounty, Through Christ our Lord, Amen. GRACE AFTER MEALS We give thanks, O Almighty God for all your benefits, who lives and reigns now and forever. Amen. REGINA CAELIA Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia The Son you merited to bear, alleluia, Has risen as He said, alleluia. Pray to God for us, alleluia. V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia. R. For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia. Let us pray, God of life, you have given joy to the world by the resurrection of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Through the prayers of His mother, the Virgin Mary, Bring us to the happiness of eternal life. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

6 Things that must be completed to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation SERVICE PROJECTS One sure sign of increased maturity is increased responsibility. As people discover that you can be trusted to carry through on your promises, they will begin to count on your help in numerous ways. As you mature in faith, you will discover increased responsibilities in this area of your faith. The question is: How do you put your faith into practice? How often do you go out of your way to help others? Are you creative in finding ways to serve others, as Christ asks us? There are unlimited possibilities for projects of service, depending on how much time you have, where you live, what your interests are and your own ability. The following is a list of projects that would enable you to serve others, free of charge, either by yourself or with others. Look over the projects and check off those which you might consider doing during your preparation for Confirmation. Your teacher should approve any projects not on this list before you begin the project. ADDITIONAL CRETIVE PROJECTS ARE WELCOMED! As you actually take part in each project, be sure to fill in the Self-Accountability Sheet. You are asked to: PICK AT LEAST ONE PROJECT FROM EACH OF THE THREE AREAS GIVEN 1. Service/Ministry within our Parish Community Liturgical Ministry: reader, usher, singer, etc. Assist with parish activities: picnics, Vacation Bible School Assist with Maintenance Service, such as cleaning the Church on Parish Workdays Join our Parish Welcoming Committee 2.
