2 LENT Jesus and Nicodemus by Crijn Hendricksz, 17 th century Nicodemus A Betwixt-and-Between Disciple Fr. vănthanh Nguyễn, SVD, Give Us This Day, March 2018 Nicodemus is one of the most intriguing characters in the Gospel of John. He appears in three places: in the beginning, conversing with Jesus under the cover of darkness (3:1-21); a bit later, defending Jesus before the Sanhedrin (7:40-52); and at the end, preparing Jesus body for burial (19:39-42). We catch these glimpses of Nicodemus throughout the Lenten season: this week on Sunday (3:14-21) and Saturday (7:40-53), and on Good Friday (19:39-42). Far from being easy to describe, Nicodemus has been characterized as inquisi ve, intellectual, indecisive, secre ve, fearful, unpercep ve, courageous, risk-taking, and complex. There is no clear consensus on the nature of his character. Though Nicodemus remains an enigma c figure, we know that he is a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews (3:1), which implies that he is probably a chief rabbi or top theologian. Since he is a member of the Sanhedrin (7:50), which is the supreme governing body of Israel, he has influence. Furthermore, Nicodemus is very wealthy. He provided about one hundred pounds (19:39) of myrrh and aloes to prepare Jesus body for burial enough for a royal burial. With such a prominent religious, social, and economic status, Nicodemus would have been recognized as an honorable person of his day. The ul mate ques on for us is: How does Nicodemus fit the Johannine portrait of a disciple or believer? We are told that he first comes to Jesus at night (3:2). Perhaps he is s ll afraid to openly iden fy himself with Jesus. Furthermore, since he could not move beyond the acceptance of Jesus as a teacher and a wonder-worker, Nicodemus could not conceive Jesus metaphorical meaning of being born from above. Thinking only from below, Nicodemus asks, How can this happen? He then disappears into the darkness from which he came. Nicodemus reappears again in John 7 at a Sanhedrin gathering. Though he shows signs of courage by speaking out on behalf of Jesus cause and is sympathe c to Jesus, he recoils and remains silent when his colleagues challenge his posi on. Nicodemus reappears for the final me at Jesus burial (19:39-42). Here, though he takes some risk in burying Jesus and shows progress by his courageous and generous ac on, there are hints that he is s ll essen ally hiding under the cloak of secrecy and darkness. Nicodemus may be described as a betwixt-and-between disciple, one who is neither here nor there, hot nor cold, light nor dark. While he seeks Jesus out, is sympathe c to him, and is generous, he remains elusive, ambiguous, indecisive, and uncommi ed. The author of Revela on describes such Chris ans as lukewarm (Rev 3:16). Like Nicodemus, we are called to consistently and boldly give tes mony of faith no ma er what the cost might be. Let us not hide under the cover of darkness any longer but come into the light. Fr. vănthanh Nguyễn, SVD, is professor of New Testament Studies and holder of the Bishop Francis X. Ford, MM, Chair of Catholic Missiology at Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, Illinois. Christian Spirituality Salesian Spirituality St. Francis de Sales St. Jane Frances de Chantal A DVD series presented by Fr. Anthony Ciorra, Ph.D., Sacred Heart University Facilitated by Doris R. Brodeur, Ph.D. Thursday, March 15, 1:00 pm 2:30 pm Wednesday, March 14, 12:00 PM 1:30 PM in the Club Room of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish Hall. We will be discussing Love Let Go: Radical Generosity for the Real World by Laura Truax and Amalya Campbell, Bring a lunch. Beverages, cookies, and fruit will be provided. Please register in advance by contac ng Doris R. Brodeur, dbrodeur@mit.edu, x 314. Rooms 4 and 6 Lesson 8. Salesian Spirituality St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane Frances de Chantal ushered a gentleness, kindness, and compassion into 17 th -century France. The impulse that they both shared towards a focus on love was extraordinary in that many of their contemporaries had Jansenis c leanings toward a more severe and rigid spirituality. The fact that they were very different in background and temperament also accounts for a blending and balancing in their vision of the world and their images of God that we find in their wri ngs. Join us for this insight into Salesian spirituality. The Works of Mercy (An occasional series in which Pope Francis speaks about the corporal and spiritual works of mercy) Visiting the Sick Sharing Pope Francis, General Audience, St. Peter s Square, November 9, 2016 With this work of mercy, the Lord invites us to do an act of great humanity: sharing. Let us remember this word: sharing. Those who are sick o en feel alone. We cannot hide the fact that, especially in our days, in sickness one experiences greater loneliness than at other mes in life. A visit can make a person who is sick feel less alone, and a li le companionship is great medicine! A smile, a caress, a handshake are simple gestures, but they are very important for those who feel abandoned. How many people dedicate themselves to vising the sick in hospitals or in their homes! It is priceless volunteer work. When it is done in the Lord s name, moreover, it also becomes an eloquent and effec ve expression of mercy. Let us not leave the sick alone! Let us not prevent them from finding consola on, or ourselves from being enriched by our closeness to those who suffer. Hospitals are true cathedrals of suffering where, however, the power of suppor ve and compassionate charity is also made evident.

5 LIVING OUR FAITH You are invited to Walk Your Faith in Holy Week by experiencing the Stations of the Cross in silent procession. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church will be participating with pastors, priests, church leaders, choirs, and youth groups from churches throughout Sarasota County. Stopping for worship and prayer at each of the 14 outdoor Stations will offer an opportunity for reflection on the different moments of Christ s Passion journey. A service booklet sharing the acts of worship for each Station will be distributed to all participating pilgrims. Walk Your Faith: Sarasota s Good Friday Pilgrimage Good Friday, March 30, will be 17th year that Sarasota County churches have participated in the Stations of the Cross. More than 800 pilgrims in 2017 brought Good Friday to the streets of downtown Sarasota. Witnesses for Our Time St. Louise de Marillac Cofounder, Daughters of Charity ( ) Her feast day is March 15. [A Daughter of Charity] is well aware that we are leaving God for God if we leave one of our spiritual exercises for the service of the poor. Louise de Marillac married a wealthy cour er in the household of the French queen. She was a happy wife and mother. But when her husband died she vowed she would devote the rest of her life to the service of God. A er some years searching for her voca on, she was introduced to Fr. Vincent de Paul, who became her spiritual director and with whom she went on to form one of the great partnerships in the history of religious life. We will gather at 7:15 AM and begin at 7:30 AM in front of the Hollywood 20 Theater on Main Street. The final station is at the Church of the Redeemer, 222 S. Palm Ave., and will be reached about 8:30 AM, when all are invited to a Service of Morning Prayer (Matins) in the church. Buses will transport pilgrims from Redeemer Church to Hollywood 20 Theater beginning at 6:30 AM. For more information, contact Doris R. Brodeur, dbrodeur@olmc-osprey.org, Monsieur Vincent, as he was called, was widely known for the extraordinary range of his charitable projects. These included a circle of aristocra c ladies who joined him to work in the Parisian slums among the sick and des tute. Louise commi ed herself to this work. But soon they formed the no on of a community of women completely commi ed to loving service among the poor. Thus were born the Daughters of Charity. Rome s recogni on of a congrega on of women living outside an enclosed convent and engaged in apostolic work in the world was a novel achievement. In their spiritual forma on the Sisters were constantly reminded that the poor were their masters in whom they should find the face of Christ. Thus, they should never hesitate to leave off other spiritual obliga ons should they be summoned by those in need. Louise died on March 15, By the me of her canoniza on in 1934, the Daughters of Charity numbered more than 50,000 worldwide. Lenten Friday Bread and Soup Suppers Our final Friday Lenten Soup Supper will take place immediately following the 5:30 PM Stations of the Cross service conducted by Deacon Tom on March 16th. There will be a wide variety of meatless soups. A wonderful assortment of breads and soft drinks will accompany the soups. Please join us. Please sign up at the front desk if you wish to bring your favorite meatless soup. Mark your calendar! Sunday March 18th, 3:30 PM St. Joseph & St. Patrick Celebration Mount Carmel Hall Annual BBQ & Potluck Sign up at the front desk and let us know what you are bringing; a side dish, a salad or a delicious dessert. We provide the rest.

6 YOUTH CORNER Springtime and Lent The word Lent comes from another word Lente, which means springtime. That makes sense because Lent and Easter always happen during springtime. As I was thinking about Lent and springtime, I realized that many of the things I like to do in the springtime are similar to the kinds of things you and I can do during Lent as we prepare for Easter. In the springtime, I like to OPEN UP. I put screens in my windows so I can open up my windows and let fresh spring air fill my home. For Lent, a great thing to do is OPEN UP our Bibles and read them more. When we read our Bibles, God speaks a fresh word to us and fills our hearts with His presence. In the springtime, I like to CLEAR OUT- especially the clutter in my closets. I go through my closets and take out the things I don t really need: heavy coats, old shoes- things that will just be in the way. For Lent, it is good to CLEAR OUT the things in our lives that we don t really need things that get in the way of following Jesus. For example, maybe you watch TV or play video games a lot. Why not put them away for a while and use that extra time to pray. In the springtime, I always need to SWEEP UP. I try to find and clean up all the dirt in my home that has been hiding all winterlike under my rugs, dirt that no one else sees, but dirt that I know is there. For Lent, it is good to ask ourselves, Have I made any mistakes or messes that I need to SWEEP UP? Do I need to apologize to someone for something I said or did? Do I need to ask God to forgive me? In the springtime, I love to PLANT SEEDS. I plant seeds in my garden pots and water them as I wait and watch them grow into something beautiful. For Lent, it is good for us to PLANT SEEDS- a different kind of seeds. We can plant seeds of love in the hearts of others when we are kind, or helpful, or when we tell someone about Jesus. For Lent, think of something you can do that will become something beautiful for someone else, and do it in the name of Jesus, the one who did something really beautiful for you. Dear Jesus, We love you. Help us to Open Up our Bibles, Clear Out our clutter, Sweep Up our messes, and Plant Seeds of love. Amen. With thanks to Martha O'Dell, Sermons4Kids.com Prayer For Peace In The Democratic Republic Of The Congo And South Sudan Pope Francis recently reflected on the suffering caused by violent conflict in the two countries: "Our heavenly Father always listens to his children who cry to him in sorrow and anguish, who 'heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.' (Psalm 147:3) I make a heartfelt appeal so that we also listen to this cry and, each one of us in his/her own conscience before God, ask ourselves, 'What can I do for peace?'" As part of Pope Francis' Share the Journey initiative and our own Lenten sacrifices, let us pray for peace, and through our almsgiving, support the work of Catholic Relief Services in these two countries Heavenly Father, you tell of a time when the lion and lamb lie down together, and swords will be turned into plowshares, a time when all divisions will be healed. Be with the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan in their hour of suffering. May your Spirit of Love comfort them and kindle in their hearts a hope for true peace, mercy and reconciliation. Be with those leaders who hold the future of these countries in their hands. Open their minds and hearts to your Spirit of Peace so that they may work to build societies that respect the rights of all. Ever Living God, may our heartfelt prayer and fasting help bring peace and justice to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and to all the world. We ask this through Christ Our Lord, Amen.
