2 CHRISTMASTIDE Adora on of the Magi, Jacob Jordaens Rise Up; Your Light Has Come! Michael Simone, America, December 15, 2017 Two feasts of the Christmas season celebrate Christ s revela on to the whole world. Today s feast commemorates the physical revela on of Christ, the moment when Gen les recognized the incarnate Messiah. Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. (Ma. 2:2) Tomorrow we celebrate a spiritual revela on of Christ. The feast of the Bap sm of the Lord marks the moment when Jews and Gen les together recognized the divine sonship of Jesus. These two feasts mark the return to Ordinary Time, that period of the liturgical year when the church reflects on its con nuing mission to reveal Christ to the world in body and spirit. The story we hear as today s Gospel highlights the great vision of Isaiah 60 in the a en on he gives to the magi and their gi s. In Isaiah s prophecy God s mercy to Israel becomes an act of divine mercy to the whole world. This prophecy comes from a me when the Jewish people had returned from exile but before they had rebuilt Jerusalem. Just as God had summoned the na ons to chas se Zion, God has summoned them again to restore the city. People from every corner of the earth will come bearing gi s and repara ons for the Temple, the city and its people. As they stream toward Jerusalem, they encounter for the first me the divine illumina on that Israel had always known. God s mercy to Israel thus becomes a gi for everyone. In Ma hew s hands, this prophecy foreshadows the Chris an community s inclusion of the Gen les. Jesus is the new Zion, the new place in which God has taken up residence on earth. The magi s gi s, which represent, among other things, earthly wealth, religious insight and mortality, are the repara ons humanity offers to God through the magi. The joy they found at the end of their journey is one of the first effects of the divine illumina on now available to everyone. This twofold act of divine mercy con nues today. The Chris an community is the restored Israel. Like the returned exiles of the first reading, Christ s disciples o en first come to him in great need. Whether we are cradle Catholics or recent converts, Christ s tangible presence in our lives is a mercy we cannot do without. In the liturgy, the sacraments, the Scriptures, our fellow Chris ans and sacred mes and places, we can encounter physical reminders of the incarnate Son. Like the magi, we can respond with our best gi s our industry, our devo on, our very lives. We disciples are Christ s tangible presence in the world. That same child whose light brought such joy to the magi now, through us, offers his mercy to every person. Through us, every day, Christ feeds mul tudes; he heals, teaches and guides countless people. Through individual volunteers and major ins tu ons, through simple acts of kindness or worldwide coordinated efforts, the world can encounter, through the Chris an community, the enduring, tangible presence of Christ. Awake to Our Blessedness Ronald Rolheiser, OMI, Give Us This Day, January 2018 The event of Jesus bap sm is wonderfully described in the Gospels: Jesus comes to the Jordan River to be bap zed by John the Bap st. As Jesus reemerges and his head breaks the waters, the heavens open and God s voice is heard: You are my blessed one; in you I am well pleased. We need to be alert to the underlying image here of Jesus physically breaking the waters. Much like when a child is born it breaks the waters of its mother s womb, Jesus bap sm is an image of birth: as his head breaks the water he is being born into a new consciousness, the consciousness of knowing his own Because of this awareness Jesus can look at every situa on and see it as blessed: Blessed are you when you are poor, when you mourn, when you are hungry, when people hate you, when you are abused, and when you are persecuted. How can he say such an astonishing thing? Because he has been blessed, he sees others through that prism. The blessing at his bap sm forever colors his eyesight. Most of us were asleep to our own bap sm. But just as surely as those words of blessing were spoken over Jesus, they were also spoken over us and they should become the prism through which we see. Known as Three Kings Day throughout the world, Dia de los Reyes falls 12 days after the birth of Jesus Christ and is considered the day of the Epiphany. This Twelfth Night holiday is often celebrated with a feast and, in some countries, actually the day when kids get to open presents. Typically, the family meal also includes Rosca de Reyes the traditional Kings Bread. Baked round to represent a King s crown, the Rosca de Reyes is a staple of the holiday. Hidden within the sweet bread is a Baby Jesus figurine. The boy or girl who finds the toy in his or her slice must then prepare tamales for everyone on the Day of the Candles, which is celebrated on February 2. In some countries, children leave their shoes right outside their doors so the Three Kings will leave their gifts inside; the bigger presents are placed around them. Many families leave a box of grass (or hay) and water for The Three King s camels to eat. This practice is similar to the tradition of leaving out cookies and milk for Santa Claus. Camels are known for being a bit sloppy, leaving a trail of hay behind them that children can follow to their gifts! While Latinos all celebrate a little differently, this traditional holiday is very popular from Argentina to Puerto Rico.
