2 LIVING OUR FAITH Our Lady of Mt. Carmel - December 8, 2013 Dear Friends, We are ready to light the second candle of the Advent season. The room gets a little lighter as we hear the story of St. John the Baptist calling the people to purify themselves for the great event to come. St. John is as authentic a messenger as any of the Old Testament Prophets. His appearance is in direct contrast to the popular culture of the Pharisees and the Sadducees whom he chides for their distracted lives and closed hearts. He calls the world to Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his path. He invites each of us to clear away all the obstacles in our lives and hearts that prevent the coming of the Lord into our homes this year. Our preparations begin in the spirit of St. John, by owning up to our sinfulness and standing in line in the spirit with those at the time of St. John. They waited to be cleansed of their sins by washing in the Jordan. We wait to be absolved of our sins through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Their forgiveness was temporary, only anticipating with St. John, the event to come. Ours is permanent, given through the events that have come to pass: The birth, death and resurrection of Christ. Christ has given us a very wonderful and personal way to meet him in reconciliation. The risen Christ, invisible to our mortal eyes becomes visible to us through the compassion of the ordained priest, who is called, through the rite of reconciliation, to assures us of God s unrelenting love, understanding and forgiveness. Today, just as then, the comfortable and popular culture moves away from such a radical response as reconciliation. Individualism and self-justification triumph in a secular society. The observance of Advent has been lost in the commercial anticipation of a secular winter holiday. Our traditional Christmas values and cheers are being replaced, not with hope and reconciliation but with self-indulgence, noisy parties and aspirations for material prosperity. The world is no longer a place where the Infant Christ, the Nativity and the Magi are sacred signs. Christians have to find Advent and Christmas, not in the streets, but in our homes and churches. We also have to pick up the cry of St. John the Baptist, proclaiming the gospel to our world which has forgotten or never heard the song of the Angels or seen the light of the Christmas crib. We can cast a true light on this season by our examples of Christian living, beginning with the purification of our lives and the removal of obstacles to the grace of Christmas. On Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM our community is gathering for the celebration of Reconciliation. It is a wonderful demonstration of solidarity, Christian humility and faith. I hope to see you there.
