2 LENT The Crucifixion Seen from the Cross, James Tissot, 1890 Triduum: Redeemed by the Mystery Rachel Linner, Give Us This Day, April 2019 For many years I have spent Good Friday a ernoon at Boston s Holy Cross Cathedral Noon Prayer, the Seven Last Words, and the celebra on of the Passion of the Lord. Because I inevitably cry, I value the anonymity of the cathedral. Even more, I love being at the cathedral that day because in segregated, parochial Boston it is one of the few places where there is a palpable sense of the universality of the Church. We gather, people of every race and na on, every tongue and tribe, rich and poor, able-bodied, blind and lame, religious and lay. Everything that defines the texture of our daily lives is subsumed in the slow and somber procession to venerate the wood of the Cross on which hung the salva on of the world. The dis nc ve Chris an charism is a belief in u er equality: every person is deemed worthy of Christ s sacrifice on Calvary. None of us, bap zed or not, are le unredeemed by the mystery we celebrate during this holy Triduum, from the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday to Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday. Jesus story is ours and ours is his, so everything that happens in these three days has or will happen to us. The poignancy of a last meal, whether food and drink around a table or ice chips at the bedside of a dying loved one. The piercing humility of being served by a teacher, of being forgiven by someone we betrayed or denied. The ravaging fear and vulnerability when everything that bestows security and dignity is ripped away. The mor fica on of being mocked and humiliated and the impossibility of answering spurious charges. Like Jesus, we will die. Maybe at the hand of another, in war, crime, or terror. Maybe from fire or flood. Maybe as a result of unjust policies shaped by people we will never see. Most of us will die from disease, disability, or the diminishments of age. We will lose control of our bodily func ons. We will be unable to take food or drink. We will say it is finished, and we will release our spirit. We will endure the silence of the grave because Jesus, too, was buried and descended to hell, to free our ancestors from the chains of death. And, like Jesus, we will rise from the dead. When I leave church on Good Friday, exhausted by the intensity of the day, I am always disoriented to find myself in an urban neighborhood, with people going about their ordinary life. It takes awhile for the dissonance to dissolve, for my a en on to shi from Golgotha to Boston. I wonder if it was like that for the people who stayed with Jesus un l his death. I think about those urban crowds when, outside of Holy Week, I become distracted at Mass. I want to say to them and to myself pay a en on. Something important, something life changing, is happening here. At this very moment, Christ is being crucified and being raised from the dead, giving his body and blood for you and me, for all people. But here s the thing: Christ does this whether we pay a en on or not. We can be oblivious to this act of supreme generosity, or we can pay a en on to it. And if we do, there is no telling how God s power might transform our lives. Rachelle Linner, a freelance writer and reviewer, has a master of theological studies from Weston Jesuit School of Theology. Chrism Mass - The Chrism Mass, which takes place during Holy Week every year, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 16 at Epiphany Cathedral, 350 Tampa Ave. W., Venice. During this Mass, the faithful of the Diocese join the Priests, Deacons and Bishop Frank J. Dewane for the blessing of the Holy Oils which are used in the administra on of the Sacraments at each parish throughout the year. Priests and Deacons celebra ng 25 and 50 years of Ordina on are recognized at this Mass. All are encouraged to a end in support of our clergy and to par cipate in this important Holy Week celebra on. Our pastor, Fr. Fred will be recognized for the celebra on of his Golden Jubilee of Ordina on.

4 ADULT FAITH ENRICHMENT Photography as a Spiritual Practice Morning Shoeshine, Chile, D. R. Brodeur Psalms of Lament Today, our response to the reading from Isaiah is Psalm 22 a psalm of lament. We pray, My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? (v. 2) One third of all the psalms are laments. Psalms of lament remind us that God is on our side, willing and able to provide for us in our distress. We remember mes of protec on from the past. Laments allow us to establish solidarity with those who are oppressed. They can help strengthen us in our commitment to jus ce and peace. Some are individual; some are communal. Laments generally follow a pa ern: We address God directly. We take our complaint straight to the top! My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Ps. 22:2) Hear, O God, the voice of my complaint. (Ps. 64:1) Have mercy on me, O God (Ps. 51:3) Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to my neck. (Ps. 69:2) We describe our complaint. It might be a descrip on of suffering, a reason why God should do something, a promise or vow. Laments express every possible distress we can imagine: we are sick, our friends have turned against us, enemies seek to trap us, we know we are guilty, we are down in the dumps. Whatever our complaint, there s a lament for us! We tell God what we want and o en how we want God to do it. We ask God to rescue us, to come quickly to help us, to heal us, to grant us jus ce, to rain down hot coals on our enemies and let death surprise them. We give God reasons to help us by poin ng out what God has done in the past. Moment, Gesture, and Place Wednesday, April 17, 10:30 AM 12:00 PM, Rooms 3 and 5 The featured Na onal Geographic photographer in April is William Albert Allard. Professional photographers o en travel the world to produce photographic essays, but anyone can tell a story with pictures without buying a plane cket to a faraway place. You can tell a story about the neighborhood you live in or your own backyard. In this lecture, we will hear about ways in which photographs can capture moments, gestures, and the essence of a place that contribute to the telling of a story. For more informa on, contact Doris R. Brodeur at OLMC, dbrodeur@olmcosprey.org, ext We say, I m guilty, so have mercy on me (Ps. 51) or, I m innocent, so vindicate me! (Ps.17) If you get me out of this, I ll say the rosary every day! or I ll fast three mes a week! We express our hope. Laments almost always end in confidence and thanksgiving. One of the individual psalms of lament that we pray o en during Lent is Psalm 51. Praying Psalm 51 means, first of all, acknowledging our involvement in every kind of human failing: from offense (a willful rebellion), to guilt (a distor on of right existence), and sin (a devia on from one s proper purpose in life). These are not simply evil ac ons that belong to the past. They are instead a present reality that is before us always. Unlike some other psalms, Psalm 51 allows no protests of innocence or claims of extenua ng circumstances. This is rather a passionate appeal to God s mercy, goodness and compassion. While our viola ons of God s commands o en involve crimes against our neighbors, it is the way they disrupt our rela onship with God that makes them truly sinful. As a result, our only hope is to acknowledge our offenses and plead with God to wipe them out. The song Open My Eyes by Jesse Manibusan is based on Psalm 51. Psalm 90 is a communal lament that describes only in general terms the cause of the community s distress. A er confidently invoking God (v. 1), the psalm turns to a complaint contras ng God s eternity with the brevity of human life (v. 2-6) and sees in human suffering the punishment for sin (v. 7-12). The psalm concludes with a plea for God s interven on (v ). You turn man back to dust, saying, Return, O children of men. For a thousand years in your sight are as yesterday, now that it is past, or as a watch of the night. (v. 3-4) Janet Sullivan Whitaker has set Psalm 90 to music in In Every Age.

5 Books of Interest LIVING OUR FAITH The Following of Jesus: A Reply to The Imita on of Christ by Leonardo Boff (Orbis Books, 2019) The Jesus presented in The Following of Jesus is the one who speaks to crowds, to the poor, to sinners; he offers a project of total inner and outer transforma on of all reality to make way for the Reign of God, star ng with the poor. Leonardo Boff The Imita on of Christ, Thomas à Kempis s devo onal classic of the 15 th century, is one of the most popular spiritual manuals of all me, second only to the Bible. While removing Christ en rely Witness for Our Time Corrie ten Boom Rescuer and Witness ( ) She is remembered on April 15. This is what the past is for! Every experience God gives us, every person He puts in our lives is the perfect prepara on for the future that only He can see. Corrie ten Boom lived in Haarlem, Holland, with her older sister Betsie and their widowed father. They were devout Chris ans who measured their quiet lives by the plain values of the Gospel. With the Nazi occupa on of Holland, that faith was put to a terrible test. While the occupa on brought hardship for everyone, for Jews it meant something infinitely worse. Corrie prayed that some way from his historical context, it defined the path of Chris an discipleship in terms of imita ng the spiritual a tudes of Christ. Without rejec ng Thomas s spiritual insights, Leonardo Boff sets out to complement The Imita on of Christ with a message that speaks to our own me. While situa ng the way of Jesus in the wider story of the cosmos, he connects Jesus s radical response to the structures of his day with the contemporary challenges of discipleship. In The Following of Jesus, Boff in effect summarizes his own life me of reflec on on the Chris an message. Leonardo Boff, a Brazilian theologian, is the author of over sixty books, including Francis of Rome & Francis of Assisi; Chris anity in a Nutshell; Jesus Christ Liberator; Come, Holy Spirit; and Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor (all Orbis). In 2001, he received the pres gious Right Livelihood Award. This book is available in the OLMC Parish Library. would open for her to be of help. The opportunity came quickly when, one night, a Jewish woman knocked on her door, having heard that the ten Booms might offer shelter. Immediately Corrie invited her in. Others began to arrive. Corrie sought help from members of the underground who provided stolen ra on cards and constructed an ingenious hiding space in an upstairs bedroom. But eventually, their luck ran out. They were seized by the Gestapo. Their father died ten days later. Corrie and Betsie were sent to Ravensbruck concentra on camp. Betsie convinced Corrie that God was with them in the camp and that they had a mission to bear witness there to God s love. We must tell people what we have learned here, she said. We must tell them that there is no pit so deep that he is not deeper s ll. Betsie died the next day. Corrie, however, by a mysterious fluke, found herself released. Returning home to wait out the war, she lived on for nearly forty years, traveling the world to bear witness to God s love. She died on April 15, Walk your Faith: Sarasota s Good Friday Pilgrimage Good Friday, April 19, will be the 18th year that Sarasota County churches have participated in the Stations of the Cross. More than 900 pilgrims in 2018 brought Good Friday to the streets of downtown Sarasota. You are invited to Walk Your Faith this Holy Week by experiencing the Stations of the Cross in silent procession. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church will be participating with pastors, priests, church leaders, choirs and youth groups from churches throughout Sarasota county. Stopping for worship and prayer at each of the 14 outdoor Stations will offer an opportunity for reflection on the different moments of Christ s Passion journey. A service booklet sharing the acts of worship for each Station will be distributed to all participating pilgrims. We will gather at 7:15 AM in front of the Hollywood 20 Theater on Main Street. The final station is at the Church of the Redeemer, 222 S. Palm Avenue, and will be reached about 8:30 AM, when all are invited to a Service of Morning Prayer (Matins) in the church. Buses will transport pilgrims from Redeemer Church to Hollywood 20 Theater beginning at 6:30 AM. For more information, contact Doris R. Brodeur, dbrodeur@olmc-osprey.org, x 314.

6 YOUTH CORNER Keeping Holy Week with Children Based on Dina Strong, Peeking through the Palms, (All Saints Press, 2019) Palm Sunday Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! (Mark 11:9) Palms were trees that grew all around Jerusalem. God s people used palm branches to honor kings or to celebrate feasts. In one feast, they would shout, Hosanna! which means Save us, Lord! And Jesus did. Tuesday of Holy Week The spirit of the Lord is upon me. (Luke 4:18) Today Bishop Dewane will bless three special oils and set them aside in honor of Jesus, the Christ. The word Christ means one who has been anointed. Long ago, people were anointed with oil running onto their head. But Jesus tells us that his anointing is different. God has chosen Jesus and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. And you have been given that same Holy Spirit in baptism. (The three special oils will be carried to the altar at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church on Thursday evening.) Holy Thursday He poured water into a basin. (John 13:5) Jesus knelt in front of his friends and washed their feet. In Jesus day, this was one way to make a guest feel especially welcome. How do we make people feel welcome to our homes? Today, take turns with your family making each one of you feel especially welcome. Good Friday Jesus knew that his hour had come. (John 13:1) Today is the day we remember how God made the whole world new, through Jesus. Go for a walk today with a family member or friend. Aloud or silently, thank God for seven beautiful things you see in God s great new world. Holy Saturday I remember you through the watches of the night. (Psalm 63:7) Tonight we remember the whole story of God s People and Jesus in the Easter Vigil. We will light candles together to remember: Jesus is our Light and we are his lights for the world.
