We are offered the opportunity to share the bread of wayfarers as we journey. Already we have the possibility of being nourished by the presence of the risen Christ. Step Back, and Come Back Fr. Michael Casey, Give Us This Day, August 2018 Many people dri away from religious prac ce because they are bored. I suppose that most of us feel that way some mes. In this situa on today s reading from Proverbs is a good tonic. When we embrace the spiritual pursuit we are invited to a sumptuous feast. Though we are plain people without much understanding of lo y truths, the offer is open to all. We are called to leave behind the foolishness of the past and make our way toward a more abundant life, although we cannot really understand in detail what awaits us at the end of the journey. Yet not everything is postponed un l the next life. Even If we find ourselves dri ing away from spiritual engagement, even if we are already feeling alienated from the spiritual world, the direc on can be reversed if we try to come back to the prac ce of personal prayer. To step back from our many important ac vi es on a regular basis is to make room for God. It can be as simple as you like. Words that mean something to us are important, but the meaning of prayer transcends the words we use. What counts is that we are reac va ng a rela onship that is life giving. A er that anything can happen. Michael Casey, a Cistercian monk of Tarrawarra Abbey in Australia, is a well-known retreat master and lecturer, and the author of many books on spirituality, including Seventy-Four Tools for Good Living and The Road to Eternal Life. Session Date Topic Photography as a Spiritual Practice resumes on Wednesday September 19, 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, in Rooms 3 and 5. Everyone is welcome. No prior photography experience is necessary. The focus is on receiving and sharing images, and not on technical camera work. We will meet on the 3 rd Wednesday of each month (with the excep on of November, which will be the 4 th Wednesday). Each month we will feature a video of a Na onal Geographic photographer, presen ng his or her work on specific themes. There will be monthly assignments that will be shared with the group during the subsequent month. He lives in Ireland and speaks throughout the world. On Monday, August 13th, several vehicles full of food were driven to Immokalee. In addition, the drivers took $ in cash and gift certificates. All of this is due to the continual generosity of our parishioners and to those who work so hard to gather the donations. We are most grateful to all those who helped to load the vehicles and the drivers who delivered your gifts. The next collection will be held on the 8th & 9th of September. Witnesses for Our Time Carla Pie e Maryknoll Sister ( ) She is remembered on August 23. I have cried so much since arriving here. I am red from mourning not red of it but red from it so I ask the Lord of the Bea tudes to open me to the comfort He always sends. Carla Pie e entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1958 at the age of nineteen. She was described at the me as friendly, outgoing, jovial, big-hearted and generous. She spent fi een years working in a Chilean slum called La Bandera. There she was joined by Maryknoll Sister Ita Ford, who would become her close companion. Together they endured the brutal military coup in 1973 and the repression that followed. In 1980 a fateful me they both volunteered for a new assignment in El Salvador, arriving the day of Oscar Romero s assassina on. Carla and Ita accepted an assignment in the department of Chalatenango, where harsh military repression had caused a flood of refugees. It was hard to do pastoral work under such circumstances. They were le to improvise, mostly, as Carla said, just accompanying the poor old beat-up people. Much of their work, she said, was simply driving people places. Nevertheless, they were so regularly exposed to scenes of horror that Carla found herself praying for a heart of stone in place of her heart of flesh. On August 23, Carla and Ita were called to transport a prisoner who was being released from jail. Se ng out at night they were caught in a heavy downpour. When their jeep overturned in a flash flood, Carla pushed Ita to safety. Her ba ered body was found the next day. Prayer to Honor the Assumption of Mary Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives you praise, for all life and all holiness come from you. In the plan of your wisdom she who bore the Christ in her womb, was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven. May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love and praise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
