2 ORDINARY TIME Jesus Walks on Water by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, The Important Question Nick Wagner, Give Us This Day, August 2017 Nobody is where they are supposed to be in today s readings. In omitted passages at the beginning and end of the first reading, the Lord twice asks, Why are you here, Elijah? Elijah knew where the Lord wanted him to be doing the Lord s work in Damascus but he was afraid for his life (19:14-15). Jesus disciples were supposed to be on the other side, but the winds were slowing them down and tossing them about. At the first opportunity, Peter abandoned ship. He no longer had the strength or courage to go to the other side. He was less afraid of drowning than going where he d been sent. The powers of the world often threaten and forestall us. It can be difficult to go where the Lord sends us when the wind is against us. Nevertheless, the call could not be clearer. The Church must step outside herself, says Pope Francis. To go where? To the outskirts of existence. And yet, we delay. We are afraid to go outside ourselves. When we are fainthearted and hesitant, Jesus says, Do not be afraid. Because there is work to do. We have to face our fears and go to the other side where we will find, as the disciples did, all those in need of healing (Matt 14:35). We have to ask, are we on board? If not, what are we going to do about it? Nick Wagner, a writer in San José, California, is the founder and director of TeamRCIA.com a free resource to help parish teams form Christians for life. You can contact him at nick@teamrcia.com. Feast of the Assumption of Mary The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Michael O Brien (contemporary Canadian artist) An Act of God Mary Stommes, editor of Give Us This Day Our daughter was baptized on the Feast of the Assumption, in the Church of the Assumption. Holy the day, holy the place, holy this new child of God. At least that s how I now see it. But three decades ago, at the time of the blessed event, my sense of holy was more down-to-earth as in, holy buckets! It takes an act of God to get two sleepdeprived parents, a rambunctious two-year-old, and an infant ready for church. The Church, it turns out, wondered if we were truly ready. You have asked to have your child baptized... Fr. Leo read from the rite. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking? That the question didn t make us laugh or cry or faint on the spot this too was an act of God. Or maybe the result of our Blessed Mother s intercession. What if at the Annunciation the angel Gabriel said to Mary, You have been asked to become the Mother of God. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking? The question might have sent her heading for the hills and not those that led to her cousin Elizabeth s house in Judah. This is to say that at the time of the Annunciation, Mary didn t clearly understand that the child in her womb would suffer and die on the cross three decades later. She didn t clearly understand that he would rise from the dead. And she could never have imagined that God would one day bring her body and soul into heavenly glory, there to be with her Son for all eternity. Do we ever clearly understand the enormity of what it means to be Christ-bearers? Of course not. But all that God desires in any given moment is our humble yes. Holy that word. Holy the Love it unfurls.

4 Storytelling Through Photography ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT On Wednesday, September 20, we will resume our monthly photography classes with a new title and focus, Storytelling through Photography. Everyone is welcome to join us, whether you have been part of the group in the past or not. Note that we will meet on the 3 rd WEDNESDAY of each month, 10:30 AM 12:00 PM. This year our classes will include a DVD series of National Geographic photographers. Monthly topics will include light and color, landscapes and nature, people in their environment, and birds and animals. Our assignments will be slightly different this year, with more emphasis on creating photo essays that tell stories that matter to each of you. No prior photography experience is required. A simple camera and a desire to share your stories in images will do. For more information, contact Doris R. Brodeur at OLMC, dbrodeur@olmc-osprey.org, Books of Interest No Crystal Stair: Womanist Spirituality by Diana L. Hayes (Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books, 2016) No Crystal Stair: Womanist Spirituality by womanist theologian Diana L. Hayes is a compilation of ten of Hayes essays on and about spirituality, drafted from her perspective as a womanist and published between 1992 and Hayes writes very personally from her own experience. What is womanist spirituality? In the words of Diana L. Hayes, womanist spirituality is the encounter of black women and Jesus spelled out in song, poetry, novels, and memoirs that speak of the everlasting struggle as they continue to move themselves and their people one step closer to the Promised Land. (p. xxvi) The term womanist comes from poet and author Alice Walker who sought a descriptive term for audacious, courageous, bold and daring black women that did not restrict them with definitions already developed by others who had not shared their experiences, for example, (mostly white) feminist theologians and (mostly male) black theologians. Womanist theology seeks to bring the presence and activity of black women to the forefront, rather than the background, of the church s awareness and dialogue. (p. 107) In identifying herself as womanist, Hayes gives us insight into the common experiences of black women in the United States. We begin to see God, life, situations, tragedies, etc. through the lens of black women with Hayes education, background, and economic circumstances. For example, the experience of many black women who were caught in the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina was very different from that reported in the media, by mostly white middle-class journalists. The stories of Eve, Mary, and Mary Magdalene, for example, are told very differently from the perspective of women than from that written by the four evangelists. And they are written from a womanist perspective differently than from that of white European and North American feminists. Reading Hayes work can encourage us to name our own experiences and may give us the confidence to interpret Scripture and build a spirituality that is our own -- not unique to us, of course, but held in common with others of similar background and culture. May we all begin to tell our own stories of our encounters with God on our respective journeys. International Dining is back and better than ever! Everyone is welcome. Join us as we travel to France for our next International Dinner. Please BYOB. $10.00 gets you a seat and a c est magnifique dinner. We provide everything, from the place setting right on down to a delicious dessert. We are looking forward to seeing you on August 25th in the Parish Hall. Doors open at 5:30 PM, dinner served at 6:00PM.

5 SOCIAL JUSTICE EXECUTION PRAYER VIGIL 5:00 PM AUGUST 23, 2017 National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty - The faithful are invited to join Bishop Frank J. Dewane in signing a national pledge to end the use of the death penalty. The Catholic Mobilizing Network's National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty was announced in Washington, D.C. As Chair of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, Bishop Dewane was one of the first signatories who have committed to advocate, educate and pray for the end to the use of the death penalty. This pledge gains greater urgency as the State of Florida plans to resume executions beginning in late August after an 18-month hiatus. For more information on the national pledge, please visit: pledge. There is great value in gathering in worship with other believers, and it is an essential part of Christian living. Please join us as we conduct a prayer vigil on Wednesday August 23, 2017 at 5;00 PM in our church. This is the first execution in Florida since January These vigils gather our community together, not only for the person being executed, but for the victims of that crime, for all victims of all crimes, for their families; anyone ever affected by violence, for bullying and especially for those who kill in the name of justice. the Governor, the Attorney General, the guards, the doctors administering the drugs and the spectators. We also pray for conversion of non-believers. We pray for the abolishment of the death penalty as well, but as you can see, our scope is far wider than one person being executed. We also pray the Rosary, light candles, pray and petition God to end violence everywhere. Please come and see what we do. You might be as moved as our participants are. Our Lady off Mt Carmel is one of the very few churches that hold these. We need to understand that for us to ask God for forgiveness, we also need to forgive. August 14. Saturday, September 16, 2017 For more information please see the bulletin board, or contact Fran Marshall, Witnesses for Our Time St. Maximilian Kolbe Franciscan Martyr ( ) His feast day is I would like to use myself completely up in the service of the Immaculata, and to disappear without leaving a trace, as the winds carry my ashes to the far corners of the world. On July 30, 1941, a prisoner escaped from Auschwitz, the notorious Nazi camp in Poland. In retaliation, the commandant lined up inmates of Cell Block Fourteen and ordered that ten of them be selected for death. When one of the ten cried out that he would never see his family again, another prisoner stepped forward and volunteered to take his place. When the commandant asked who he was, he replied, I am a Catholic priest. His offer was accepted, and so Fr. Maximilian Kolbe assumed his place among the condemned. Kolbe and the other prisoners were locked in a death bunker with nothing to consume but their own urine. He passed the time leading his companions in prayer, preparing them for death, and keeping vigil with them as they gradually succumbed. When, after two weeks, Kolbe and three others were still alive, the Nazis dispatched them with injections of carbolic acid. In 1982 Pope John Paul II, who as bishop of Krakow had often prayed at the scene of Kolbe s death, presided over his canonization in Rome. Present for the ceremony was the man whose life Kolbe had saved. The pope called Kolbe a true martyr and saint for our times whose heroic charity proved victorious over the architects of death.

6 YOUTH CORNER Hi! This is Margaret with a yummy way to remember August 15th, the Assumption of Mary. I'd like to think that every good story has a surprise twist and a happy ending. The biography of Mary of Nazareth is no exception. Here we see a woman especially prepared for a singular mission. The surprise twist is that she is asked by God to become the Mother of Jesus. The final chapter of her life is just as interesting as the beginning! She was truly successful in her unique role and she received a special welcome home. Like the prophet Elijah, Mary is "taken up to heaven" or, to put it another way, "assumed into heaven." Perhaps this is too complicated for the little ones we love and care for... but we can still celebrate in a way they can understand. The following activity and recipe makes a heavenly summer dessert that we can all appreciate! It will also work for the feast of the Ascension. Ingredients: Berry Blue Jell-O, Cool Whip and parfait glasses Directions: Prepare the Berry Blue Jell-O according the the directions on the package. Layer spoonful of Berry Blue Jell-O and Cool Whip in narrow glasses to create the sky and clouds. Be sure to alternate where you place the Cool Whip clouds so that you get a nice staggered effect. Enjoy! Please Mark Your Calendars with the following important dates! Registration for Religious Education begins next weekend, August 19-20; classes will start September 18th. Annual St. Francis Pet Blessing is scheduled for October 1st at 4:00 PM in the Parish Hall. Kids are invited to come early for the "Francis Fest". The kids activities begin at 3:00 p.m. and all are invited to stay for the blessing at 4:00 PM whether or not they have a pet present. Sunday, October 29th we are planning an All Saints Party at the Parish Hall from 3-4 p.m. Come in your saintly costume for a chance to win a prize. All the kids of the parish are invited. (must be accompanied by a parent or guardian)
