2 ORDINARY TIME The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Michael O Brien (contemporary Canadian artist) The Woman Clothed with the Sun Sr. Marianne Race, CSJ The feast of the Assump on of Mary is celebrated on Wednesday of this week. Included is a reading from the Book of Revela on describing in magnificent language a woman clothed with the sun. Who is this woman, and how did this image come to be associated with this feast? The Book of Revela on belongs to the genre of apocalyp c literature. Its Jewish-Chris an author John has wri en in highly symbolic language for an audience under siege. This prophet relays visions that have come to him through a divine being for the purpose of consoling those under persecu on. Historical events are interpreted in such a way as to assure hearers that good will triumph over evil and to encourage them to live the covenant promises in order to enjoy eternal salva on. John s wri ng abounds in metaphors and exaggerated images that daunt a reader s ability to comprehend the message. In Wednesday s Lec onary passage John fuses images from the Hebrew Scriptures with ancient myths about the birth of certain gods. His first-century audience would know the story of the birth of the sun god Apollo whose mother, Leto, was carried off by the north wind to an island to rescue her and her child from the a ack of the serpent/dragon Python. The adult Apollo eventually killed Python. Other tradi ons have similar stories, resul ng in a universal symbol (archetype) of the heavenly mother and her divine child a acked by an evil monster who arose from the waters of chaos. It is the role of the child-become-adult to overcome the monster. John s descrip on of the woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars associates her with a high goddess or queen of heaven. The child, however, is des ned to rule all the na ons with an iron rod, a messianic reference (Ps 2:9). John has again mixed pagan imagery with Jewish tradi on. Who is this woman? A common understanding among scholars is that this woman represents Israel. Isaiah provides a portrait of Zion as a mother who gives birth to a na on (66:7-13). There are a number of references in Scripture in which Israel is described in feminine language (Isa 54:5-6; Jer 4:31; Mic 4:9-10; Zep 3:14-16). John takes these ancient tradi ons and reinterprets the woman as the people of Israel and the child as the Messiah. His message must have helped first-century believers understand their own social and historical situa on. They are the people of Israel once rescued from slavery in Egypt and now besieged by the dragon, Rome. They know the myth in which the dragon is defeated. They need encouragement to stay faithful to their beliefs and way of life in the midst of a violent society bent on their destruc on. It is easy to see how the woman clothed with the sun would later become associated with the feast of the Assump on and take on a new meaning. God first fulfills in Mary the same promises made to us. Even as she bore to the world the Messiah, so do we. God s promises of presence and ac on accompany Mary from her humble beginnings to her glorious Assump on. These assurances are our heritage as well: the promise that there is an end to suffering, that God s goodness will triumph over whatever evils challenge our society today, and that fidelity to inclusive love, mercy, and generosity is the path to eternal life. I began to discover a new freedom in the Cross: freedom to love the enemy; and in that freedom, the freedom (without hypocrisy) to will and to try to set him free. Though he had intended to remain only for the weekend, Daniels was so shocked by the system of segrega on that he decided to stay on. Lowndes County was a stronghold of the Ku Klux Klan. Though the popula on was mostly black, not a single African American was registered to vote. Daniels joined protests against segregated stores and facili es, worked to integrate the local churches, and tutored schoolchildren. All the while, he struggled to see his work as a form of ministry not just to the oppressed but also to their oppressors. Freedom, he believed, must come by way of the Cross. In August he spent six days in jail a er being arrested at a protest. When he was released on August 20, he and a white Catholic priest and two African American women tried to buy a soda at a nearby store. Their way was blocked by a white man, who leveled a shotgun at one of the women, Ruby Sales. Jonathan pushed her aside just in me to take a full blast to his chest. He died instantly. He is commemorated in the Episcopal Church calendar on August 14.
