2 ORDINARY TIME Second Reading: I Corinthians 12:4-11 Gi s of healing by the one Spirit; to another, mighty deeds; to another, prophecy... Receiving a gi is always a lovely moment. It doesn t ma er if it s a flower or a box of chocolates, a book, or a pair of pajamas. It s just great to get something, to be treated like you ma er! God sends a present to the early Church, which Paul quickly unwraps. But it s more than just a gi for Paul: it s a box full of gi s for everyone in the room! And what a collec on of wonders: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, mighty deeds, prophecy, discernment, speaking in tongues, and interpre ng what this language of the angels means. Paul insists that everyone in the room gets something from the box. The Wedding at Cana, William Hole, 1906 Wedding Catastrophe, Averted Alice Camille, Exploring the Sunday Readings, v 28 n 4, January 2019 First Reading: Isaiah 62:1-5 You shall be called My Delight, and your land Espoused. Isn t it great to be loved? To belong as someone s child, to be chosen as the beloved, or to be named the special friend out of a world of possible alterna ves? It s like ge ng top billing at the box office or having your song climb to #1. Discovering that we re lovable is the champagne of life. So put this in your fluted glass: God loves you. God chooses you. God wants you, more than anything. God wants your happiness, God desires your freedom, God seeks your eternal companionship. If you ve ever been desolate or forsaken by others, that won t happen with God. God is the one whose love you can count on. God has been in the business of loving you since before you were in your mother s womb. And if you don t know what that kind of total devo on is like, get ready to find out. Q. Whose love has taught you about the kind of commitment that lasts? Q. Whose tenderness has invited you to become a real lover yourself? Q. What s in the box for us? Are we using the gi that s been given? Q. Are we afraid to take it out of the box and to find out who we become if we let it escape? Gospel Reading: John 2:1-11 The mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. Every wedding party experiences its own crisis. I knew a woman who flew to Alaska to marry her fiancé. She brought her packed gown to a cleaner for a late-hour press. The cleaner s shop was closed on her wedding day, when she went to pick up the dress. Yikes! No dress! Meanwhile the florist, fearful the flowers would not stay fresh, put them in a freezer overnight. They turned black. Then the couple s ride to the church failed to appear. Finally, as they arrived belatedly to the church, the guitarist started to play the opening song, and broke a string. No ma er: they got married anyway. A shortage of wine at a wedding in Cana was a social disaster in a culture that expected days of partying at the marrying families expense. Jesus fixed it. The fix was so fast, not all of the well-lubricated guests even no ced. But the headwaiter no ced. This second batch of wine was be er than the first. It was amazing, in fact! Why was it served so late? Because in the kingdom, the last is always first. Q. How has Jesus supplied your lack in me of need?

4 ADULT FAITH ENRICHMENT RCIA A Journey in Faith Are you, or is someone you know, thinking about belonging to a Catholic Christian faith community? You may have been baptized but no longer attend church. Or, you may participate in parish activities with a family member without having been baptized or confirmed. RCIA welcomes people from all backgrounds. Principles of Catholic Social Teaching Led by Fr. Fred Tillotson, O. Carm., S.T.L., M.A. Tuesdays, January 8, 15, and 22 10:30 AM 12:00 PM, Rooms 4 and 6 Highlights several of the key themes and principles that are at the heart of our Catholic social tradition: the life and dignity of the human person; the call to family, community, and participation; rights and responsibilities; concern for the poor and vulnerable; the dignity of work and the rights of workers; solidarity; and, care for God s creation. Refers to papal, conciliar, and episcopal documents that articulate Catholic social teaching. Please register in advance by calling ext What is RCIA? The letters RCIA are an acronym for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the process in which people are welcomed into the Catholic Christian community and introduced to a Catholic way of life. Through the RCIA process, people gradually learn what it means to be Catholic not just by hearing it, but also by experiencing Catholic life and worship within the OLMC parish community. How do I learn more about RCIA? If you are interested or you someone who is interested, please speak with our pastor, Fr. Fred Tillotson, O.Carm., or Doris R. Brodeur, Adult Faith Enrichment Coordinator, at x314. An Excerpt from the Statement of the Catholic Bishops of Florida on the 46th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade January 22, 2019 So great is the value of a human life, and so inalienable the right to life of an innocent child growing in the mother s womb, that no alleged right to one s own body can jus fy a decision to terminate that life, which is an end in itself and which can never be considered the property of another human being. - Pope Francis, Amoris Lae a, no. 83 We join together today renewing our cry for an end to everything which denies the sacredness of life, including the unacceptable judicial decision in Roe v. Wade and the interpreta on of Florida s privacy clause favoring abor on. We ask God to help us to protect unborn children and their families, and to grant wisdom and courage for those in elected office. May our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we may recognize that devaluing the most innocent and vulnerable life leads to a coarseness and callousness towards one another and all life. The complete le er can be found on the bulle n board.

6 YOUTH CORNER Communicating with Youth and Young Adults Youth (ages 12-18) and young adults (ages 19-39) communicate with each other in very different ways from 10 and 20 years ago: texting, Facebook, tweets, Facetime, etc. While digital communication does not replace faceto-face interactions, facility with newer modes of communication is crucial in communicating with youth and young adults. The Internet, in particular, serves as a valuable information source and opportunity to dialogue where distance and time do not allow a face-to-face connection to take place. Here are three examples of websites focused on youth and young adults. Busted Halo is a unique media resource that uses a relevant voice to help young people understand the Catholic faith, put it into practice in their everyday lives, and share it with others. Through articles, video, podcasts, radio, and social media, Busted Halo aspires to help young Catholics embrace their faith more fully. Each of us sports a Halo that is either dented, scratched, tarnished in some way Busted. God loves us despite this and continually calls us to polish our halos up to a nice golden shine. Busted Halo is a ministry of the Paulist Fathers. TO GO FORTH To Go Forth is a blog of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development (JPHD). The blog takes its inspiration from Pope Francis challenge to go forth to the peripheries to share the Good News and stand in solidarity with those suffering poverty and injustice. JPHD promotes awareness of Catholic social teaching and opportunities to live the Baptismal call to love God and neighbor. Efforts include the anti-poverty mission of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, as well as advocacy in support of poor and vulnerable persons and communities, in the U.S. and abroad. As a Eucharist-centered movement within the Roman Catholic Church, Life Teen leads teenagers and their families into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. With the Blessed Virgin Mary as intercessor and guide, Life Teen seeks to unleash the fullness of the Sacramental power present within the young Church. Life Teen was launched in 1985 as a parish-based youth ministry in Mesa, AZ focused on the Mass and gathering teens together at a Life Night. Life Teen continues to be focused on bringing teens to Christ in the Eucharist and gathering them to be formed in the Roman Catholic faith.
