2 ORDINARY TIME Artist Unknown Persistent Creativity John Shea, Give Us This Day, August 2017 Jesus characterizes the Canaanite woman as having great faith. We often think of faith as belief in God. Great faith is often construed as believing in God even in situations of suffering. In suffering situations there is the temptation to feel we have been abandoned by God. Great faith asserts God is present even when obvious signs of that presence are missing. Holy people always acknowledge and pray to God. However, this is not the great faith of the Canaanite woman. Her faith is that she is a tiger. There is a situation that needs healing, and she is the single-minded servant of that possibility. If she has to twist the arm of a Jewish Messiah and remind him that although there may be many ethnic groups and religions there is only one God, then so be it. Faith is not only a relentless commitment to the betterment of people and situations. It is also the creative ability to find a way to that betterment. When we understand great faith as the persistent creativity to bring about the good, the ranks of the saints swell with a different crowd of people. There is a research doctor with his eyeball glued to the microscope, a community organizer in the back of the hall urging voices not used to talking, a teacher finding a way into a closed mind, a banker figuring out how to get a loan to a woman on the edge of qualification, a salesperson dedicated to the customer, etc. In fact, great faith belongs to all of us when we remind each other of the deeper truth of who we are, and compassion flows from us into situations where it is deeply needed. John Shea is a theologian, author, and storyteller who lectures nationally and internationally on storytelling in world religions, faith-based health care, and contemporary spirituality. Witnesses for Our Time Sr. Mary Luke Tobin Sister of Lore o ( ) She is remembered on August 24. If people don t have hope, I believe, then the work of the church is not done. If we don t have hope, then our faith is of li le help or comfort. In 1964, Sr. Mary Luke Tobin, Superior General of the Sisters of Lore o in Nerinx, Kentucky, found herself on a ship to Rome. As the newly elected president of the Conference of Major Superiors of Women Religious (later known as the Leadership Conference of Women Religious), she had set out to observe and learn what she could about the ongoing Va can Council. While en route, she learned that she had been appointed as an official observer of the Council one of only fi een women auditors afforded this status. In receiving her creden als, she was told she was there only to listen, not to talk, but she should feel free to a end any session of interest to women. Naturally, she interpreted this as a mandate to a end all sessions. As it turned out, through the interven on of theologian Bernard Haring, Tobin did have an opportunity to speak. She was invited, along with two other women, to serve on the preparatory commissions on the Church in the Modern World as well as the document on the laity. It was, as she later said, an opening, although just a ny crack in the door, to a recogni on of the vast indifference toward women and the ignoring of their poten al within the whole body of the church. She went on to play an enormous role in the renewal of religious life in the post-council era. A staunch advocate for the role of women in the Church, she also worked relessly for peace and social jus ce. Go out on a limb, she said. That s where the fruit is. She died on August 24, 2006.

4 ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT RCIA A Journey in Faith Are you, or is someone you know, thinking about belonging to a Catholic Christian faith community? You may have been baptized but no longer attend church. Or, you may participate in parish activities with a family member without having been baptized or confirmed. RCIA welcomes people from all backgrounds. What is RCIA? The letters RCIA are an acronym for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the process in which people are welcomed into the Catholic Christian community and introduced to a Catholic way of life. Through the RCIA process, people gradually learn what it means to be Catholic not just by hearing it, but also by experiencing Catholic life and worship within the OLMC parish community. How do I learn more about RCIA? If you are interested or you someone who is interested, please speak with our pastor, Fr. Fred Tillotson, O.Carm., or Doris R. Brodeur, Adult Faith Development Coordinator, at OLMC Book Club The OLMC Book Club welcomes you to a new season that begins on Wednesday, September 13 at noon. We meet on the 2 nd Wednesday of each month in Mt. Carmel Hall for a brown-bag lunch, followed by lively discussions of the selected books. Here s our line-up for the fall. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene? She is currently Director of Communications for the Diocese of Albany, New York. She is a frequent contributor to Give Us This Day. She is the creator of the blog, Not Strictly Spiritual, which focuses on the spiritual journey and discovering the divine in the everyday. Although she doesn t get to post as often as she d like these days, it is still the place where she goes to hash out some of her own spiritual struggles and new recipes. In additional to her posts, the site includes descriptions of her books, public speaking engagements, food, travel, and two menu tabs called Cravings and Everyday Divine (based on the titles of two of her books). Community Outreach Ministry: The Center of Hope Monthly Collection of Personal Hygiene Items Next weekend, August 26 and 27, OLMC will collect personal hygiene items to be distributed by The Center of Hope of South County. There will also be a covered box to receive any cash (or check) donations. The posters in the foyer have pockets with slips of paper with specific needs of The Center for this month. The lists usually include razors, deodorant, shampoo, bath soap, combs, etc. Saturday, September 16, 2017 For more information please see the bulletin board, or contact Fran Marshall, There is great value in gathering in worship with other believers, and it is an essential part of Christian living. Please join us as we conduct a prayer vigil on Wednesday August 23, 2017 at 5:00 PM in our church. This is the first execution in Florida since January These vigils gather our community together, not only for the person being executed, but for the victims of that crime, for all victims of all crimes, for their families; anyone ever affected by violence, for bullying and especially for those who kill in the name of justice. the Governor, the Attorney General, the guards, the doctors administering the drugs and the spectators. We also pray for conversion of non-believers. We pray for the abolishment of the death penalty as well, but as you can see, our scope is far wider than one person being executed. We also pray the Rosary, light candles, pray and petition God to end violence everywhere. Please come and see what we do. You might be as moved as our participants are. Our Lady off Mt Carmel is one of the very few churches that hold these. We need to understand that for us to ask God for forgiveness, we also need to forgive. If you can help before one Mass each month with collecting donations, we would greatly appreciate it. The Center of Hope of South County, Inc. 110 E. 6 YOUTH CORNER Hi! This is Margaret with a story about a man who was passionate about eternity. During a visit to Sydney, I happened to hear how this graffiti artist captured the soul of the city with a single word. It's a story worth repeating. For over twenty-five years, from 1930 to 1956, the people of Sydney woke up each morning to see they'd been visited by a phantom of the night. This phantom would become the most famous graffiti artist in Australia's history. A single word was found handwritten on the sidewalks, on the train platforms and on city streets. That word was, "Eternity." Where it came from, how it got there, what it meant and who was behind this phenomenon was a mystery to everyone. The mystery became fascination and eventually, turned to obsession. But despite all the curiosity, sleuthing and intense scrutiny, the artist and his intentions remained anonymous for twenty-five years. Finally in 1956, a Baptist minister happened to see the church cleaner writing the word "Eternity" on the walkway. When the minister asked him, "Are you Mr. Eternity?" he quietly responded, "Guilty, your honor!" An interview by journalist quickly followed and the story was out. The curious citizens of Sydney soon learned that Arthur Stace had seen the worst of life, both growing up, on the WWI battlefields and in his own struggle with alcoholism. He had recently become a Christian but was still living on the streets when he went to hear a sermon by a famous "fire and brimstone" preacher named Rev. John Ridley on November 14, He respected Ridley, not only because he was a religious man, but a decorated WWI veteran. When Ridley during the course of his sermon declared, "I wish I could shout eternity through the streets of Sydney," the words resonated powerfully with Arthur Stace. Stace, remembered that moment for the rest of his life as a powerful catalyst and recounted, "He repeated himself and kept shouting ETERNITY, ETERNITY and his words were ringing through my brain as I left the church. Suddenly, I began crying and I felt a powerful call to write, "ETERNITY." I had a piece of chalk in my pocket and I bent down there and wrote it." This became his practice and commitment for the next thirty-three years of his life. As Arthur himself said, "I've been writing it at least fifty times a day ever since." As I reflected upon this, I came across a song by Nathan Tasker, "Eternity (What We Were Made For)" also inspired by the story of Arthur Stace. It made me think that "Eternity" is an important, but almost a curiously quaint word today. I wonder if Arthur Stace was alive and still writing his daily graffiti, would people even notice?! Sometimes I wonder if, while we enjoy so many good things, we may have lost our sense of eternity, This is a terrible thing because once we forget other-worldly view, we often lose sight of what we're made for... Perhaps we first start to think about eternity when death is staring us in the face and we feel fearful and unprepared. Maybe we need to start talking about eternity right from the beginning, so that it becomes part of our language and worldview? Has any one of you come face to face with eternity recently? Eternity. Let's start thinking about it!
