2 ORDINARY TIME seems like no big deal, even with the Sta ons of the Cross tacked up around the church like so many warning signs that this way of Jesus is not as carefree as it may seem. Q. The just one suffers for jus ce s sake. How much have I been willing to risk for jus ce? Gospel Mark 10:35-35 Can you drink from the cup that I drink. They said to Jesus, We can. Drinking from the Jesus Cup Alice Camille, Exploring the Sunday Readings, October 2018 First Reading -- Isaiah 53:10-11 Through his suffering, my servant shall jus fy many. Holy Communion is such serious business, I wonder how so many of us dare to get up and receive it, Sunday a er Sunday. Ea ng this bread and drinking this cup has very clear-cut ramifica ons. We re par cipa ng in the life of Jesus, and also in the death of Jesus. We take on the responsibility to inhabit Christ-life and to be Christ-bearers into the world, like Mary of Nazareth so long ago. This bread and wine are, in faith, crucified flesh and blood poured our for the sake of the world. Do we really intend to par cipate in a life this daring, a death this costly? Of course, most of us aren t thinking about this as we spill out of the pews and head toward the front of the church. We re just ge ng communion, receiving a sacrament that we ve received to no worse effect for years or decades. It Every me I hear this story, my heart twists painfully. James and John are so sure they can drink from the Jesus cup. How readily they tell him, We can. And they can t. Which they ll come to realize in just a ma er of days. I want to shout out from the pews and across the centuries: Guys, guys, don t say it! Don t make that stupid request and even more ignorant pledge. Posi ons next to Jesus in his glory are not what you think. Those sta ons will be taken by two common thieves, strangers to this story, while you re saving your skins across town. Sharing a cup with Jesus is not just an honor to be enjoyed; it s more urgently a surrender of your very selves. Then I consider how I make the same miscalcula on, week a er week. I drink from the Jesus cup; I recite creeds and profess allegiances. Yet you ll find me cowering across town and under the covers when the hour comes for courage, and the real price of religion is being paid. Q. On this World Mission Sunday, what are you willing to sacrifice? Q. How far does your courage go for what you profess? Community Outreach Ministry: The Center of Hope The Center of Hope has moved! The Center of Hope of South County moved to their new space a few weeks ago. The new address is 2395 Shamrock Road in Venice. We had suspended our monthly collection of personal hygiene items during their moving process. Next weekend, October 27 and 28, OLMC will resume our monthly collection of personal hygiene items to be distributed by The Center of Hope of South County. There will also be a covered box at the desk to receive any cash (or check) donations. The posters in the foyer have pockets with slips of paper with specific needs of The Center for this month. The lists usually include razors, deodorant, shampoo, bath soap, combs, etc. Please note that we are collecting personal hygiene items only. Food donations will continue to be collected for Immokalee on the 2 nd Sunday of each month. Collections for the Center of Hope will be on the 4 th Sunday of each month. Used clothing and shoes should be brought directly to the Center in Venice, and NOT to the church. If you would like to volunteer at the Center of Hope of South County, please contact Janice Rousseau at the Center. If you can help at OLMC before one Mass each month with collecting donations, we would greatly appreciate it. North Carolina The History of Christianity II: From the Reformation to the Modern Megachurch A Great Courses DVD Series with Molly Worthen, Ph.D., University of Thursday, October 25, 1:00 PM 2:30 PM Lecture 5. The Catholic Reformation The Reformation was really two intertwined events: the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Reformation. That is, both those Christians who broke away from the authority of Rome and those who affirmed it believed that some change was necessary to preserve and spread the true faith. For hundreds of years before Martin Luther wrote his famous 95 Theses, reformers within the Catholic Church had been working to banish corrupt or ungodly practices and bring the church more into line with God s will as they understood it. This lecture is a tour of Catholic life in the 16 th century from the top of the church to the grassroots, covering the geopolitical picture of Europe as well as the experiences of individual believers. How to Read and Understand the Bible The Historical Books Led by Fr. Fred Tillotson, O.Carm. Thursday, October 25, 9:00 AM 10:00 AM In this session, we will take a tour through the Historical Books of the Bible: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, 1 &2 Chronicles, Ezra, and Nehemiah. We will explore tradi onal and contemporary interpreta ons. Bring a Bible with you. The Church Militant in the Spanish Empire Queen Isabella of Castile was one of the toughest women in European royal history. She was also a religious zealot who took it upon herself to tramp around to the convents of Spain, dressed in plain clothes, to pray with the nuns and convince them to reject worldly things in favor of the simple Christian life. But she was ruthless, too. Her ambition for a global empire and religious purity became very clear after she married Ferdinand of Aragon in In this lecture, we ll consider their powerful vision of Catholic empire. Tuesday mornings 10:30 AM-12:00 PM October 30-December 4, 2018 In the OLMC Library Contact: Darwin Reeck at the parish office to register Witnesses for Our Time Richard McSorley. SJ Jesuit and Peacemaker ( ) He is remembered on October 20. I see my mission in life, as God has made it known to me, to help make the Catholic Church what it should be, a peace church. Jesuit Father Richard McSorley became one of the preeminent voices for peace in the American Catholic Church. He marched, sat in, went to jail, and used every pulpit, classroom, and opportunity available to proclaim the Gospel message of nonviolence. Before embracing the Gospel of peace, he had experienced the face of war. In December 1941, while teaching in the Philippines as part of his Jesuit forma on, he was seized by the Japanese and imprisoned un l the end of the war, enduring starva on, torture, and the constant threat of death. And yet the great turning point in his life came many years later while teaching theology at Georgetown University. It was then that he came under the influence of Mar n Luther King Jr. King explained the meaning of the Gospel to me, he said. He taught us that Jesus was serious about nonviolent love, racial jus ce, and peacemaking, and King showed us how to live the Gospel as well. For the rest of his life McSorley became a reless crusader for peace and an opponent of all violence, par cularly the nuclear arms race. The intent to use nuclear weapons, he said, was the taproot of violence in our society today. In blunt language, he declared, It s a sin to build a nuclear weapon. He remained ac ve and outspoken un l his death at eightyeight on October 17, Immokalee Food Drive We had a wonderful collection for the Immokalee Food Drive. Thanks to your generosity, a great amount of food and a donation of $ were delivered Monday, October 15th. The next collection will be held on the 10th and 11th of November. Grocery bags will be distributed at all Masses on the 3rd and 4th of November.

6 YOUTH CORNER Excerpts from the MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS FRANCIS FOR WORLD MISSION DAY 2018 Together with young people, let us bring the Gospel to all. Dear young people, I would like to reflect with you on the mission that we have received from Christ. In speaking to you, I also address all Christians who live out in the Church the adventure of their life as children of God. What leads me to speak to everyone through this conversation with you is the certainty that the Christian faith remains ever young when it is open to the mission that Christ entrusts to us. Life is a Mission Every man and woman is a mission; that is the reason for our life on this earth. To be attracted and to be sent are two movements that our hearts, especially when we are young, feel as interior forces of love; they hold out promise for our future and they give direction to our lives. More than anyone else, young people feel the power of life breaking in upon us and attracting us. To live out joyfully our responsibility for the world is a great challenge. Transmitting the Faith to the Ends of the Earth You too, young friends, by your baptism have become living members of the Church; together we have received the mission to bring the Gospel to everyone. You are at the threshold of life. To grow in the grace of the faith bestowed on us by the Church s sacraments plunges us into that great stream of witnesses who, generation after generation, enable the wisdom and experience of older persons to become testimony and encouragement for those looking to the future. And the freshness and enthusiasm of the young makes them a source of support and hope for those nearing the end of their journey. DIOCESE OF VENICE IN FLORIDA Office of the Bishop October 10, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In his message for today's celebra on of World Mission Sunday, Pope Francis explains that "life is a mission." Each one of us is called to reflect on this fact: "I am a mission on this Earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world," the Pope writes in Evangelii Gaudium (#273). Focusing on young people, the Holy Father went on to note: "In speaking to you, I also address all Chris ans who live out in the Church the adventure of their life as children of God." All Faithful of the Diocese of Venice are invited to see World Mission Sunday as a special moment to live out the mission shared as God's children, the mission to bring the Gospel to the whole world. I encourage you to be a "voice for mission" through your prayers and through the help that you are able to give in support of the priests, religious and lay pastoral leaders in mission lands. These men and women work relessly, day in and day out, proclaiming the Gospel, building the Church, and serving the poor in more than 1,100 mission dioceses throughout the world. The prayers and financial considera on given this weekend for the Society for the Propaga on of the Faith on World Mission Sunday, the Pope explains as con nued support for the "preaching of the Gospel to every na on," thus "contribu ng to the human and cultural growth of all those who thirst for knowledge of the truth." "Mission revitalizes faith," Pope Francis reminds us, quo ng Saint Pope John Paul II in Redemptoris Missio (#2). May your commitment to the Lord's con nuing mission renew your faith and be a blessing in your life. Please know of my personal gra tude for your generous response on this unique day for the en re Church. Sincerely yours in Christ, + Frank J. Dewane Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida
