2 EASTER TIME Our Creed Is Joy Alice Camille, Exploring the Sunday Readings, May 2018 First Reading Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, Can anyone withhold the water for bap zing these people? A thousand things can make you miserable today. The weather. The news. The condi on of your health. Money worries, family issues, traffic jams, the shoes you re wearing, the slowness of an Internet server, what s being served for lunch. If you keep a list of everything that annoys, angers, frightens, disappoints, or depresses you today, the list might scroll down quite a ways. I used to keep such mental lists. The day s failures felt personal, even blameworthy. Mul plied across a week, or a year, and the burden approached unbearable. Then I discovered joy: not in a pill of a glass or a romance, but in the way the folks at Cornelius house found it. The Holy Spirit is eager to pour down the full complement of spiritual gi s that bloom into a garden of spiritual fruits one of which is joy. This Easter joy isn t the product of circumstances, so a change in situa on can t take it away. Easter joy collects reasons to hope, not evidence of despair. If you don t like the list in your head or heart, seek the news that remains good. Q. Are you a joyful person, or do you need daily elements to align correctly to bring you happiness? Gospel Reading John 15:9-17 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy might be complete. As a cradle Catholic and product of twelve years of parochial schooling, I can vouch that much of our religious educa on does not underscore the idea that God wants us to be happy. We hear about the many demands God puts on us if we wish to be counted among the people of faith. There are things we must do and things we shalt not do. There are rules we have to obey and tempta ons we have to avoid. We re supposed to choose the narrow gate and find a way to squeeze through it with a bag full of pie es and devoid of major flaws. We re expected to collect a lot of sacraments, say a lot of prayers, do a lot of pew me, and be as moral and decent as possible. None of this is bad advice. But it s missing that famous cateche cal founda on for why this is useful. God made us to share in eternal happiness. We see, know, and love God to prepare for our shared life. Life in Christ completes our joy, as Jesus tells his disciples. If joy is the des na on, why wait for the end of the trail to begin the celebra on? Q. With whom do you share your joy to make it more complete? Into your hands O Lord, we commend the souls of our recently departed. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Lee (Orbis Books, 2018) A window into the soul of an ordinary man who was an extraordinary witness to the mercy of God in a merciless world. Daniel G. Groody, University of Notre Dame Many years a er his death in 1980, the world is s ll absorbing the witness of Óscar Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador, martyred for his commitment to the poor and social jus ce. In this work, Michael E. Lee offers a profound reflec on on the theological implica ons of Romero s life and ministry. Drawing on Romero s biography as well as his homilies and other wri ngs, Lee considers specifically how Romero s witness challenges Chris ans in the U.S. to reimagine a robust Chris an spirituality that is at once a mys cal encounter with God and a prophe c engagement in the struggle for jus ce. In light of Romero s bea fica on and pending canoniza on, Lee reflects on the implica ons of the archbishop's recogni on as a martyr and on the model of holiness he offers for the wider church today. Michael E. Lee is associate professor of theology at Fordham University. He is the editor of Ignacio Ellacuría: Essays on History, Libera on, and Salva on (Orbis 2013), and author of Bearing the Weight of Salva on: The Soteriology of Ignacio Ellacuría (Crossroad). 5 May Celebrations Dedicated to Mary LIVING OUR FAITH Pope Ins tutes New Celebra on of Mary, Mother of the Church May 21 Last month, the Va can announced Pope Francis decision that the Church celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as Mother of the Church every year on the Monday a er Pentecost, as a way to foster Marian piety and the maternal sense of the Church. This year, the memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, will be celebrated on May 21. A celebra on of a memorial generally means that prayers and readings specific to the day s memorial are used in the Mass. The Pentecost, 15 th century, Waldburg-Wolfegg Collec on at Wolfegg Castle The Marian tle of Mother of the Church, was given to the Blessed Mother by Bl. Pope Paul VI at the Second Va can Council. It was also added to the Roman Missal a er the Holy Year of Reconcilia on in Subsequently, some countries, dioceses and religious families were granted permission by the Holy See to add this celebra on to their par cular calendars. With its addi on to the General Roman Calendar, it will now be celebrated by the whole Roman Catholic Church. The Crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary May 13 Here at OLMC, we will honor Mary with a crowning ceremony that will take place on Sunday, May 13 at the 10:30 AM Mass.
