2 ORDINARY TIME The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant by Jan van Hemessen, c Doing Unto Others Alice Camille, Exploring the Sunday Readings, v 27 n 12, September 2017 First Reading: Sirach 27:30 28:7 Those who live by the sword, die by the sword. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. We all get what we deserve. These sayings are about the curious matter of reciprocity, which most of us either want or fear. Reciprocity is like karma: the Eastern idea that people shape their fate in the next life based on the forces they generate in this life. Many of us are at home with a more instant version of karma: if we do a rotten thing to someone, we expect to pay for that sooner rather than later. The writer of Sirach, wisdom teacher Ben Sira of the century before Jesus, was onto something when he saw forgiveness coming to those who forgive, and pardon available to those who show mercy. On the other hand, if the outgoing expression to our neighbor is anger, we can t expect healing and peace to be coming our way. These aren t just mysterious formulas of justice built into the universe; they re as close as the chemistry in our bodies generated by our acts of kindness, or deeds of darkness. Q. How do you feel when you do a generous thing? Q. How does brooding and rehearsing injuries you ve suffered feel? Gospel: Matthew 18:21-35 The story continues to sound fantastic, though we ve heard it many times. A servant is forgiven a sum so astronomical he could never have paid it back. Yet this same servant throws his own debtor in prison for pennies, comparatively. What kind of whacked out standard was this guy living by? Why wasn t he consumed by his own good fortune enough to share a little of the joy with a fellow servant? And then it hits us like a two-by-four. Oh. This isn t a tale of unbelievable smallness of heart. It s how you and I behave every day. Jesus goes to the cross to demonstrate the absolute forgiveness of the entire debt of human history. And we respond by gross irritation at every trifling offense we perceive against us. Someone takes our parking place, gets our order wrong, cuts us off in conversation, and we re ready to erase them from the book of life. If we begin each day reminding ourselves how wealthy in forgiveness we are, we might dole some out by the hour. Q. In which circumstances do you find yourself routinely prepared to make someone pay? Q. What does it take to return you to the spirit of charity? Join us as we gather to pray for God's peace to be poured out upon the world. We pray for those in countries torn by strife, war, injustice and we pray for victims. We pray for those who suffer. We pray for each other - that we have the courage to be peacemakers. Share with us for an hour to pray in our faith community for peace in our world. Thursday, September 21st, 5:00 PM.

4 Storytelling Through Photography ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT Using Photo Essays to Tell Stories Wednesday, September 20, 10:30 AM 12:00 PM Everyone is welcome to join us, whether you have been part of the group in the past or not. Note that we will meet on the 3 rd WEDNESDAY of each month, 10:30 AM 12:00 PM. This year our classes include a DVD series of National Geographic photographers. Monthly topics will include light and color, landscapes and nature, people in their environment, and birds and animals. Our assignments will be slightly different this year, with more emphasis on creating photo essays that tell stories that matter to each of you. Bozeman Stampede, D. R. Brodeur (2017) No prior photography experience is required. A simple camera and a desire to share your stories in images will do. Please bring a journal or notepad. For more information, contact Doris R. Brodeur at OLMC, dbrodeur@olmc-osprey.org, PASTORAL MINISTRY COMING SOON! Stephen Ministry Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish has enrolled to become a Stephen Ministry parish. What does that mean? OLMC is beginning a ministry that will help us train and organize some of our members to provide quality care to those in our parish community who are in need of support; particularly those experiencing divorce, grief, recent health diagnosis, a terminal illness, loss of a job, relocation, retirement, loneliness, and many other stresses or challenges. Our Stephen Ministry will be led by staff member Darwin Reeck. Darwin became a Stephen Leader at his home parish in Minnesota in 2010 and has trained more than 40 Stephen Ministers in that parish. Watch future bulletin announcements for more information. Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 1 Peter 3:8

5 LIVING OUR FAITH Witnesses for Our Time St. Andrew Kim and the Korean Martyrs (d ) Their feast day is September 20. This is my last hour of life, listen to me a en vely: if I have held communica on with foreigners, it has been for my religion and for my God. It is for Him that I die. My immortal life is on the point of beginning. Last words of St. Andrew Kim The Church in Korea claims the dis nc on of having been founded not by foreign missionaries but by indigenous lay Beatification on September 23, 2017 Stanley Rother Priest and Martyr ( ) Bea fica on is a declara on by the Pope that one of the deceased faithful lived a holy life and/or died a martyr s death and in now dwelling in heaven. Bea fied persons are called Blessed. In the early morning hours of July 28, 1981, Father Stanley Rother was murdered in the rectory of the church of San ago A tlán in Guatemala. Unlike other martyred priests of Central America, this lanky Oklahoma farm boy did not pose an obvious Community Outreach Ministry: The Center of Hope Catholics. In China in the eighteenth century, Korean diplomats first heard the Gospel and returned to Korea with Chris an wri ngs. In 1784 a young Korean named Yi Sung-hun traveled to China where he was bap zed with the name Peter. He returned to Korea and established the first Catholic community in the country. Over me foreign priests arrived to serve the growing community, and in 1831 the vicariate apostolic of Korea was officially established. By this me, however, the Chris an community had already suffered waves of bi er persecu on. In 1984 Pope John Paul II canonized 103 Catholic martyrs, including Andrew Kim, the first na ve-born Korean priest. These martyrs died over the course of many years, along the way suffering horrible tortures along with weeks and months in confinement. St. Andrew was himself the son of a Chris an convert and martyr. Bap zed at fi een, he le for seminary training in Macau and eventual ordina on in Shanghai before returning to minister in Korea. He was arrested in 1846 and spent three months in prison prior to his execu on. Before his death he wrote a moving le er of encouragement to his fellow Chris ans. threat to the rich and powerful. To some, Father Rother might even have seemed naively detached from the social upheaval around him. But in Guatemala there were those who saw subversion in any effort to affirm the dignity of the Indian peasants. Fr. Rother s first challenge was to master the Mayan dialect of the Tzutuhil Indians. He quickly won their trust and respect by his complete dedica on to the needs of the community. Eventually, the violence in Guatemala reached San ago A tlán, and Fr. Rother and his pastoral team could no longer avoid the need for precau ons. For a more complete story, see the bulle n board in the hallway. Prayer cards are available there. paper with specific needs of The Center for this month. The lists usually include razors, deodorant, shampoo, bath soap, combs, etc. If you can help before one Mass each month with collecting donations, we would greatly appreciate it. Monthly Collection of Personal Hygiene Items Next weekend, September 23 and 24, OLMC will collect personal hygiene items to be distributed by The Center of Hope of South County. There will be a covered box at the desk to receive any cash (or check) donations. The posters in the foyer have pockets with slips of The Center of Hope of South County, Inc. 110 E. Colonia Lane Nokomis, FL (941) Hours: Tuesday Friday, 8:00 AM 12:00 PM For more information: Contact Donna Pierson at OLMC, , dpierson@olmc-osprey.org, or the Center of Hope, thecenterofhope2@yahoo.com.

6 From Our Pastor Well, they have finally arrived. The new church doors are in place and I hope that you like them. I am especially grateful to our generous donors who made this project possible. These doors are meant to complement the friendly welcome that you receive from our greeters and hopefully they remind you that the church is both a communion of saints and sinners. Each of the four figures, sculpted in the glass panels, welcome you into the community of Christ s Body and remind and illustrate an example of lives governed by prayer, service and love of God and neighbor. Blessed Titus Brandsma O.Carm. A Dutch Carmelite priest, martyred by the Nazis on July 26, 1942, bea fied as a martyr by Pope John Paul II on 3rd November Soon to be canonized. Father Titus was the Chancellor of the University of Nijmegen in Holland and a chaplain to the Catholic Press of Holland. An educator, mys c, journalist, priest and martyr, he argued passionately against the Na onal Socialist ideology of the Nazis and defended the right to freedom in educa on and for the Catholic Press. Arrested by the Nazis, he endured great personal suffering and degrada on even as he brought solace and comfort to the other prisoners and begged God s blessing on his jailers. His love for Mary, Splendor of Carmel, was a reflec on of his deep, in mate rela onship with her, whom Carmelites call both Mother and Sister. He was finally killed at Dachau. Pray for his early canoniza on. A signature phrase from his notes reads: He who wants to win the world for Christ must have the courage to come in conflict with it. Saint Teresa of Calcu a On 10 September 1946 during the train ride from Calcu a to Darjeeling for her annual retreat, Mother Teresa received her inspira on, her call within a call. On that day, in a way she would never explain, Jesus thirst for love and for souls took hold of her heart and the desire to sa ate His thirst became the driving force of her life. He asked Mother Teresa to establish a religious community, Missionaries of Charity, dedicated to the service of the poorest of the poor. The whole of Mother Teresa s life and labor bore witness to the joy of loving, the greatness and dignity of every human person, the value of li le things done faithfully and with love, and the surpassing worth of friendship with God. Her signature phrases are many but one that resonates is: We are not all des ned to do great things but we can all do small things with great love. St. Therese of Liseux O.C.D. At the age of 14, on Christmas Eve in 1886, Therese had a conversion that transformed her life. From then on, her powerful energy and sensi ve spirit were turned toward love, instead of keeping herself happy. At 15, she entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux to give her whole life to God. She took the religious name Sister Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. Living a hidden, simple life of prayer, she was gi ed with great in macy with God. Through sickness and dark nights of doubt and fear, she remained faithful to God, rooted in His merciful love. A er a long struggle with tuberculosis, she died on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24. Her last words were the story of her life: "My God, I love You!" The world came to know Therese through her autobiography, "Story of a Soul". She described her life as a "li le way of spiritual childhood. Therese lived and taught a spirituality of a ending to everyone and everything well and with love. She believed that just as a child becomes enamored with what is before her, we should also have a childlike focus and totally a en ve love. Therese's spirituality is of doing the ordinary, with extraordinary love. One of her signature quotes is: My mission on earth is to become love I will spend my heaven doing good on earth. I will let fall a shower of roses." St. John of the Cross O.C.D. Saint John of the Cross was born in Fon veros, Avila, Spain in In 1563, he was able to join the Carmelite Order and took the name, "John of Cross." He was sent to the university in Salamanca to study theology and philosophy. He became an expert in the Bible and dared to translate the Song of Songs into Spanish. He encountered Teresa of Avila, a charisma c Carmelite nun who asked him to join her in the reform of the Carmelite Order. John was persecuted by his own brothers for his aggressive reforms and he suffered trial, imprisonment and torture. Each week he was taken into public and lashed, then returned to his cell. His only luxuries were a prayer book and an oil lamp to read it by. To pass the me he wrote poems on paper that was smuggled to him by the friar charged with guarding his cell. A er nine months, John managed to pry his cell door from its hinges and escape. He joined Teresa's nuns in Toledo, and spent six weeks in the hospital to recover. In 1579, he was sent to the town of Baeza to be rector of a new college and to support the Discalced Carmelites in Andalusia. During the last few years of his life, John traveled and established new houses across Spain. Saint John of the Cross was bea fied by Pope Clement X in 1675, and canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in Of the many books that he wrote, perhaps the one most familiar is most is The Dark Night of the Soul. Of the many signature quotes, the most revealing is the simple phrase, In the evening of life, we will be judged on our love.
