2 EASTER TIME Love and law intui vely feel like very different territories to us. We give ourselves to love freely and passionately. We surrender to law under compulsion, some mes begrudgingly. How can these two forces ever be happily married? The Incredulity of St. Thomas, Rembrandt, 1634 Let s Get Together Alice Camille, Exploring the Sunday Readings, April 2018 First Reading Acts of the Apostles 4:32-35 The community of believers was of one heart and mind. Is your family on the same page when it comes to goals, values, and priori es? How about your neighborhood, parish, work environment, or city? We all know the na on isn t pulling together at the moment. We see how badly that goes when finger-poin ng and uncoopera veness rule the day. Unity is rarely a natural state in any gathering. We have to consciously choose it, and then methodically work to build and sustain it. Unity grows in an environment where trust is possible and mutual care is demonstrated. Consider the model of the early Church: first they embraced the way of Jesus, then they acted as if they did. The richness of that original communion of hearts and ideals remains something to strive for. Second Reading 1 John 5:1-6 For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. God s love is profoundly experienced in abiding by divine law. First, the law comes to us as a gi of caring guidance. Live according to this way, and you ll save yourself a world of hurt. The world is designed to be compa ble with this behavioral blueprint of love, honesty, and respect. Devia ons from this pa ern lead to conflict, pain, and remorse. It s love that cau ons us: don t go there. The second way we experience love in law is when we commit to following it. If divine law is given in love, it s also embraced as an act of love. Which makes it easy for Jesus to boil all of law into loving God by loving each other. Gospel -- John 20:19-31 So the other disciples said to him, We have seen the Lord. Ten disciples in the upper room encountered the Risen Lord. Thomas didn t. What was the difference between his experience and theirs? They stayed together. Thomas had chosen to go his own way. We don t know why Thomas wasn t around when Jesus showed up the first me. All we know is that he was with the community the second me around. Togetherness comes easily for some of us, and it s harder for those who are more naturally loners. Yet the ideal of Church is only a ainable in community. We have to come together, know each other, celebrate and suffer as one, take responsibility for our sisters and brothers. When we do these things, we too will see the Lord. If we insist on going it alone, our faith may more and more resemble our own reflec on. Q. What the best part of being Church to you? Q. What s the most challenging part? Into your hands O Lord, we commend the souls of our recently departed. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace: Erma Capron

We will gladly give them a shawl. Questions? Call Tina O Leary Our mission is to provide, hope, comfort, joy and healing to those who most need a reminder of God s love for them through the work of our hands and the prayers in our hearts. Divine Mercy Sunday In a series of revela ons to St. Maria Faus na Kowalska in the 1930s, the Lord called for a special feast day to be celebrated on the Sunday a er Easter. Today, we know that feast as Divine Mercy Sunday, named by Blessed John Paul II at the canoniza on of St. Faus na on April 30, Divine Mercy Sunday is not primarily about St. Faus na nor is it altogether a new Feast. The Second Sunday of Easter was already a solemnity as the Octave Day of Easter. The tle Divine Mercy Sunday does, however, highlight the meaning of the day.
5 Witnesses for Our Time LIVING OUR FAITH MaryFrances Cunningham (Mother Demetrias) Founder, Mission Helper Sisters ( ) She is remembered on April 9. God s will is the holiest thing on earth. Mary Demetrias Cunningham, the daughter of Irish immigrants, was born in Washington, DC, one of thirteen children. At the age of ten, her family moved to Baltimore. It was only a few years after the Civil War, and Mary was disturbed to witness the blatant discrimination against African Americans even in her parish church, where black children were not permitted to receive religious instruction. Eventually, she began to teach them herself on the church stairs until she was inally given the use of an unoccupied classroom. In time, with other interested women, she leased a house, intending to form a community dedicated to the religious instruction of African American children. Despite her importunate entreaties, she could not win the support of her pastor. Finally she threw herself on the ground before him and begged, For the love of God, let me go. The priest agreed to put the matter to Cardinal Gibbons, who replied, Let her go; something may come of it. This was the origin in 1890 of the Mission Helper Sisters. Aside from religious education, the Sisters opened centers for vocational training. In time their services extended beyond the original focus on African Americans to the needs of the poor in general, including daycare centers for immigrants and schools for the deaf. They spread throughout the United States as well as Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Mother Mary Demetrias died on April 9, Today s Responsorial Psalm Today, the 2 nd Sunday of Easter, our response to the reading from the Acts of the Apostles is Psalm 118. The refrain is Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlas ng. Bob Dufford, SJ has set this psalm to music. (You can find a performance of Psalm 118 by searching for the tle and the name of the composer.) Sing to the Mountains Bob Dufford, SJ Based on Psalm 118, 1975, Breaking Bread 2018, #531. Undy Sunday (and Saturday) Our community outreach partner, The Center of Hope, distributes used clothing to men, women, and children. Many of you have already donated so generously. Thank you. On the 4 th weekend in April, April 21 and 22, in lieu of our Sing to the mountains, sing to the sea. Raise your voices, li your hearts. This is the day the Lord has made. Let all the earth rejoice. I will give thanks to you, my Lord. You have answered my plea. You have saved my soul from death. You are my strength and my song. Holy, holy, holy Lord. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. This is the day the Lord has made. Let us be glad and rejoice. Death has lost and all is life. Sing of the glory of God. Jesuit Father Bob Dufford has worked as a campus minister at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska and as an interna onally acclaimed composer of liturgical music. 6 YOUTH CORNER If you were asked to name some women who changed history, you might come up with Marie Curie or J. K. Rowling or Malala Yousafzai. But, what about Sissi Lima do Amor or Viola Desmond or Leymah Gbowee? I want to recommend a new book about 13 women (and girls) who changed history by their persistence. She Persisted Around the World: 13 Women Who Changed History by Chelsea Clinton, illustrated by Alexandra Boiger (Philomel Books, 2018) The publishers rate this book for ages 4 to 8. I believe that girls from 8 to 14 would enjoy reading the stories for themselves. And women (and men) of all ages can draw inspiration from these stories. The illustrations are exquisite. Here s one of the stories: When Sisleide (Sissi) Lima do Amor was young, it was against the law for girls to play soccer in Brazil. But Sissi wanted to play, even if she got in trouble. So, she persisted, first in secret, turning other toys into soccer balls and practicing whenever she could Eventually, Sissi s parents got her a soccer ball. When she was fourteen, two years after Brazil made it legal for girls to play soccer, Sissi started playing professionally and then joined the first Brazilian women s national soccer team. At the height of her career, Sissi was called the Queen of Brazilian Football and today is credited with inspiring a generation of Brazilian girls to be unafraid to take the field. In addition to Sissi s story, you can read about Marie Curie, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Viola Desmond, Leymah Gbowee, Caroline Herschel, Wangari Maathai, Aisha Rateb, Joanne Rowling, Kate Sheppard, Yuan Yuan Tan, Mary Verghese, and Malala Yousafzai. Happy Reading! E A S T E R
