2 EASTER TIME Dear Friends, We are fast approaching that time of year when we must say goodbye to our winter residents and break out the shorts and flip-flops for another steamy summer. We have had fun during the past six months with our international dinners, Carmel Fest, Saints Joseph/Patrick picnic, pancake breakfasts, bread and soup dinners, rummage sale, card parties, and a wide variety of educational opportunities. The best part has been the comraderie we have shared and the many get-togethers that take place amongst friends all over the parish. The collection has increased considerably this winter for which I am very grateful. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel has blessed us with a church community that is vibrant and friendly. We extend our prayers to all who are leaving us for the summer, that you have a safe trip home and that the Lord will keep you safe until we meet in the fall. During the summer, we have to make a few changes in our weekend schedule. We normally discontinue our 3:00 PM Mass on Saturday, and we will do that again, effective Saturday May 19th. We are also going to move the 4:30 PM Mass on Saturday to 4:00 PM, effective May 19th. Many have asked for this in order to take advantage of all the early bird specials at the restaurants. I know that this may sound a little confusing. Our timing is based on the coordination of our time changes with the Bishop s schedule for Confirmation. I remind you that Bishop Dewane will be joining us at the 4:30 PM Mass on May 12 th to confer the sacrament of Confirmation on our youth. We welcome the Bishop and extend our congratulations to the candidates for Confirmation: Maximillian Banuch, David Del Purgatorio, Christina DeMattia, Juliana Hernandez, Lam Nguyen, and Martha Cooper. We will have only one priest in the parish during some of the summer months. The priests from the Carmelite retirement house are no longer available to help us, and either Father Fred or Father Richard will be away for several weeks during the summer. Therefore, we are going to combine the 7:30 AM and the 9:00 AM Masses on Sunday morning by having Mass at 8:30 AM, beginning on Sunday May 20th. The 10:30 AM Mass will continue as normal. I know that the early birds will be disappointed with this change, but I hope that it will not be a major inconvenience for you. Remember that your priests are not getting any younger and deserve a break, too, during the summer. Have a wonderful summer. Blessings, Fr. Fred Into your hands O Lord, we commend the souls of our recently departed. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. The special collection April 28th & 29th supports the Catholic Home Mission Appeal. Nearly half of our country is considered home mission territory. This appeal helps our neighbors here in the United States who do not have access to basic pastoral services like Mass, the sacraments, and religious education. Through your support, the Catholic Home Missions Appeal helps these mission dioceses form vibrant faith communities and strengthens the Church at home. Please be generous.

4 ADULT FATH ENRICHMENT A More Open Ear Fr. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI, Give Us This Day, April 2016 My sheep hear my voice! But how do we know which is Jesus voice? How do we recognize the voice of Jesus inside countless websites, tweets, blogs, television channels, movies, advertisements, ideologies, and religious viewpoints? The earliest voice that spoke to me as Jesus voice was that of my parents. They were immigrants, economically poor, pious, Catholic, and their voice said this: Worldly success and personal fulfillment aren t important. Christ, family, Church, duty, and self-sacrifice are. This world needn t give us happiness. We live as in a valley of tears, where all symphonies remain unfinished. But already as a child other voices began to seep in, saying: Family, Church, and Christ are important, but so too is your happiness. Don t be so suspicious of the world. Rather, be suspicious of the Church and its timidities. I ve spent my life caught between these voices, among others. The voice of my parents eventually won out, but it isn t always so clear that their voice is everywhere identifiable with Jesus voice and that others aren t. My parents voice too had its faults. For all its truth and goodness, it could also be racist, narrow, and unhealthily fearful. Other voices sometimes spoke of a wider inclusiveness within which I would recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd. So where does that leave me? With a more open ear, challenged to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd in unexpected places, to accept the truth whatever its particular cadence. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI, is president of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas. His books are popular throughout the English-speaking world, and his weekly column is carried by more than seventy newspapers worldwide. Roseate Spoonbill (2017) Photography Exhibit D. Chesterton The Evangelist Catholicism The Pivotal Players A DVD series with Bishop Robert Barron Thursday, April 26, 1:00 PM 2:30 PM How does one engage a culture that is befuddled by Christ and suspicious of the Church? The life and witness of G. K. Chesterton show that the fundamental disposi on of effec ve evangelism is joy, and life in Christ is a day-to-day encounter with an abundant and surprising offer of grace. In this session, we travel to Oxford, London, Beaconsfield, and all of the loca ons that played a significant role in the forma on and voca on of G. K. Chesterton. Join us for an insight into the life and wri ngs of this 19 th - century literary convert. Please bring a Bible. Breaking Open the Word: The First Letter of John Facilitator: Darwin Reeck, Master s in Pastoral Ministry Tuesdays, April 10, 17, and 24 10:30 AM 12:00 PM, Rooms 3 and 5 In these three sessions, we will explore Chapters 1 through 5 of the First Letter of John. We will dig a little deeper into these Scriptural passages in an attempt to learn what John s message says to us and how we can apply that message to our daily lives here and now. Selections from these chapters will be read at weekend Masses during the month of April. Note: Please bring a Bible. We recommend the New American Bible (NAB) translation

5 LIVING OUR FAITH Witnesses for Our Time Margaret Brennan Pioneer of Religious Renewal ( ) She is remembered on April 28. Now in the autumn of my life I see more clearly how events nged with grief or seeming loss have been invita ons for the stretching of my mind and imagina on, for the deepening of my faith and the widening of my understanding. It is these blessings for which we were born. Late in her life, Sr. Margaret Brennan wrote, My life has been a long love affair with the Church.... [And] like all love affairs, mine has had its seasons. That love affair began in 1945, when she joined the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe, Michigan. In 1953, she became one of the first women religious to earn a doctorate in theology. Elected superior general of her community in 1966, she played an instrumental role in naviga ng the renewal of religious life, mandated by Va can II. In 1972 she became one of the first presidents of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. In her inaugural address she called on women religious to be countersigns to the prevailing mores of the dominant culture. Brennan was a bold, crea ve, and prophe c leader. A pioneer in promo ng theological educa on for women, she ensured that for every hundred members of her congrega on, there should be ten theologians. She herself taught theology at Regis College in Toronto for twenty-four years. But many remember her mostly for her deep and evident faith. She knew God by heart, recalled one of her novices. Prayer was who she was. One of her familiar mantras was, No ce! Don t miss the extraordinary in the ordinary. She died on April 28, Prayerful Rally to Protest Planned Parenthood On Saturday, April 28, the 3rd Annual "Protest Planned Parenthood" rallies will be held nationwide, including one at Planned Parenthood in downtown Sarasota on Central Avenue at 8th Street. The schedule begins at 10:00 a.m. on the grounds of the new Community Pregnancy Center located right next to Planned Parenthood at th St. (off Central), with a prayerful walk to follow. Those unable to join the walk can line the street in prayer in front of Planned Parenthood; those who need it may bring a small chair or stool. Parking is available behind Planned Parenthood in the Sarasota Military Academy lot. Signs will be available or bring your own. Everyone is asked to keep a peaceful attitude throughout, witnessing to the love of Christ. It is important to remember that Planned Parenthood is the leading provider of abortion, over 320,000 a year by their own statistics. Contact James Kurt at jameshkurt@gmail.com or Free in the Pamphlet Rack On Care for Our Common Home (Laudato Si ) Pope Francis (Our Daily Visitor, 2015) The Church is likewise conscious of the responsibility which all of us have for our world, for the whole of creation, which we must love and protect. Our Sunday Visitor's pamphlet, in response to Pope Francis' release of his encyclical Laudato Si', outlines the encyclical s main points, breaking it down so Catholics can understand it, and takes an unbiased look at what Pope Francis is calling us as a Church to do. Laudato Si (Praise Be!) takes its name from St. Francis of Assisi s famous Canticle of the Creatures, which begins: Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with colored lowers and herbs. The encyclical is developed along the idea of an integral ecology that addresses the fundamental relationships each of us has with God, oneself, our fellow human beings, and with our planet. 6 YOUTH CORNER I Am the Good Shepherd With thanks to Danielle s Place, How would you describe God? What is he like? Here are some of the ways God is described in the Bible: He is a shelter from the storm, our hiding place, a gardener, a friend, the light of the world, a savior, a teacher, and our creator. Today we are going to look at how King David describes God. Does anyone remember what David's job was? He was a shepherd before he became king. He described God as the Good Shepherd in the Psalms. Do you know what a shepherd is? If God is our shepherd what does that make us? Sheep. Did you know that we are a lot like sheep? Sheep need a shepherd to guide them, protect them and help them. We need God to guide us, protect us and help us too. Tangled up Sometimes sheep get themselves tangled up in brambles because they aren't looking where they are going. Their fleece is thick and the more they try to free themselves the more stuck they become. The shepherd has to come and cut the sheep free. Lost Sheep don't always pay attention to where they are going. Sometimes they are so concerned about what they are eating that they tend to wander off and get lost and the shepherd has to go out and look for them. We need God to help just like sheep need a shepherd to help them when they get in trouble. We need God to help us do the right things. Sheep need the shepherd to save them when they are in trouble. Protection Sheep can't protect themselves very well. They don't have sharp claws or sharp teeth and they don't run very fast. The shepherd has to protect his sheep from dangerous animals. He carries a rod or stick that he uses to fight off any wild animals. We also need God's protection. We can go to him when we are in trouble or scared and he will comfort us. God is our shepherd. He is a good shepherd. A good shepherd knows each one of his sheep by name. He not only knows their names, but he knows every thing about them. He knows what they sound like. He can tell by the way they cry if they are in trouble, or lost, or sick. God, our shepherd, knows everything about you. He loves you just the way you are, bad things and all. He knows when you are sad, or happy, or lonely. The Bible tells us in John 10:14, "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me." Prayer God, thank you for being our good shepherd. Thank you for protecting us and guiding us. Forgive us when we don't always follow you. Keep us on the right paths and show us the way you would like us to go. Amen. A Prayer for Our Earth All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one. O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgo en of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollu on and destruc on. Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contempla on, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for jus ce, love and peace. Pope Francis, Laudato Sí
