2 ORDINARY TIME fieldwork was to be easy that day, with the slight brush of a breeze, grapes sweet and ripe for tas ng under a merciful, rose-colored sky. Yet it may be that the choice between the narrow road and the broad byway had nothing to do with the nature of the request itself. Perhaps the real choice confron ng the sons was the road of pride versus humility, obs nacy versus obedience, a broad byway of self-will versus the narrow path of bending one s will into a knee bent in service or an arm outstretched in love. The Road to Life Sr. Elisabeth Meadows, OSB, Give Us This Day, October 2017 When it comes to choices, it seems as if we all have two roads, two ways, two voices within us, each making a claim on our will. When a decision looms, or a call comes, how shall we respond? Standing at the junc on of call and response we look at the choices available to us. O en, it boils down to pondering two roads a hard, narrow path and a broad, easy byway. Two ways, two roads, two voices... like a father with two sons who take two separate roads to two different ends. For the two sons in today s Gospel, perhaps the The narrow way, although a choice of the will, is ul mately a choice of the heart. It is not really a path we follow but a voice that beckons. The son who eventually made the right choice didn t get it right the first me. And some mes neither do we. But even if on a wrong path, the one who loves is ul mately able to hear and turn and follow. The path of love is some mes steep and narrow, but the wild grapes that grow alongside it are sweet and ripe for tas ng under a merciful, rose-colored sky. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5: Why is it that the longer we are on vacation the more anxious we are to get back home? After having the summer off, our light may be getting dim, so join us. We started our new season of Praise & Prayer on Wednesday, September 6th. As we sing praises to our Lord, share God s Word, our gifts from the Holy Spirit, and our prayers together, the darkness of this world lifts away, and the light of Christ enters in so that we can leave rejoicing and lifted up to go out and share with the world His love, which will overcome the darkness and glorify our Father in heaven. 4 ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT Archaeology Series Archaeology: An Introduction to the World s Greatest Sites A DVD series of lectures by Archaeologist and Professor Eric H. Cline of The George Washington University, produced by The Great Courses and National Geographic Thursday, October 5, 1:00 PM 2:15 PM Lesson 3. Pyramids, Mummies, and Hieroglyphics Everyone seems to be fascinated by the ancient Egyptians and knows a little something about them, especially about pyramids, mummies, and hieroglyphics. Or do they? In this lesson, we ll look at these three popular topics related to ancient Egypt to help us sift through the often-dubious claims made about them. Lesson 4. King Tut s Tomb On November 26, 1922, Howard Carter peered into the tomb of King Tutankhamen for the very first time. Everywhere in the room, there was the glint of gold. In this lesson, we ll discuss this amazing discovery in the Valley of the Kings. This class is fully enrolled at this time.. Books of Interest Act Justly, Love Tenderly: Lifelong Lessons in Conscience and Calling John Neafsey, Orbis Books, 2016 In his new book, John Neafsey focuses on how we respond to God s calling to become just and loving persons, at home and at work, for the sake of our communi es, in an ever-expanding network of connec on and solidarity with people both far and near. (Preface) The book presents a lifespan perspec ve on voca on (calling) as it is experienced in different ways over the course of our lives. John Neafsey is a clinical psychologist who writes about personal conscience and social jus ce. He writes clearly and without jargon whether theology or psychology. He cites many of the people whom I have been reading without presuming that the reader knows who they are. You may recognize the tle, Act Justly, Love Tenderly, from the Book of Micah: This is what Yahweh asks of you: only this, to act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8, Jerusalem Bible transla on) The four chapters of the book are organized around Micah s words. Neafsey fills his book with stories of people who have responded to the prophet s call to bear witness to a life of jus ce, love, and humility. In addi on to his own personal story, he recounts stories of Bryan Stevenson, founder of The Equal Jus ce Ini a ve, based in Alabama; James Foley, the journalist beheaded by ISIS in 2014; Kathy Kelly, a peace ac vist from Chicago; E y Hillesum, a young Dutch Jewish woman who died at Auschwitz in 1943, among others. Throughout the book, Neafsey emphasizes that our calling is not only about what we do; it is about who we are and how we are. Voca on has to do with the kind of person we are called to become. Regardless of circumstances, everyone has a capacity to sense a calling. Callings come to people as they are, wherever they are, in whatever circumstances they find themselves. (p. 30) You may already be in the second half of life, or like me in the final third, but it is not too late to sense a calling to act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly. According to Neafsey, most of us are not called upon to engage in prophe c public heroism or to endure the ul mate sacrifice of martyrdom for a just cause. But all of us are called to ordinary courage and personal generosity, which require the day-to-day inner sacrifice of egocentric concerns a kind of daily dying to self in the interest of steadfast love for others over the long haul. 5 PASTORAL MINISTRY STEPHEN MINISTRY Frequently Asked Questions Why the name Stephen? The name Stephen comes from St. Stephen, who was the irst lay person commissioned by the apostles to provide ministry to those in need, as recorded in Acts 6. What do Stephen Ministers do? Stephen Ministers are caring Christian friends who listen, understand, accept, and pray for and with care receivers who are working through a crisis or a tough time. Are Stephen Ministers counselors? Stephen Ministers are not counselors; they are trained lay caregivers. Their role is to listen and care not to give advice or counsel. Stephen Ministers are also trained to recognize when a care receiver s need exceeds what they can provide. When that happens they work with care receivers to help them receive the level of care they really need. Can I trust a Stephen Minister? Trust is essential to a caring relationship, and Stephen Ministers are people you can trust. Con identiality is one of the most important principles of Stephen Ministry, and what a care receiver tells his or her Stephen Minister is kept in the strictest con idence. How much does it cost? Stephen Ministry is a caregiving ministry available to all of our members free of charge. Encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. to each other and to everyone else. The Prayer Shawl Ministry Next meeting Friday October 13, :30-9:30am Summer is over and our monthly meetings are starting up again. Thank you to those who were knitting over the summer! If you have not yet participated in our Shawl Ministry please come and find out more about this rewarding ministry. These beautiful shawls are easy to make and greatly appreciated by the receiver. Work on them at home and at your pace. If you know of someone who is ill, home bound, having surgery, in a nursing home or assisted living, has lost a loved one recently, or anyone who could use a warm loving embrace, please let me know or inform someone at the reception desk. SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING As Christian adults, we have a moral and legal responsibility and are entrusted by God with the spiritual, emotional and physical well-being of minors and vulnerable adults. As they participate in activities within or sponsored by our diocese, it is our commitment to provide an environment which is safe and nurturing. In accordance with the Diocese of Venice policy to offer continued Safe Environment Awareness to all employees and volunteers, OLMC will hold a Regional Safe Environment Awareness training session. All diocesan employees...clergy, religious, laity, and those volunteers who have routine contact with children or vulnerable adults, MUST BE TRAINED in Safe Environment Awareness issues. No one should attend Safe Environment Training until their fingerprints have cleared. Continued employment/volunteer status requires that you attend one of these sessions. OLMC is hosting a regional safe environment training on Thursday evening, October 12TH at 6:00 PM, and on Saturday morning, October 14TH at 9:30 AM. Please refer to the Diocesan website, dioceseofvenice.org, for additional training times and locations.
