2 ORDINARY TIME Blessed, fortunate, happy are you who are full now, who are sleek and well fed, because you are strong enough to feed the hungry, to touch empty stomachs with compassion. But blessed only if you have the mind of the hungry, the mind of Christ. Only if you do not take your food for granted. Only if you are uncomfortable as long as one sister or brother cries in vain for bread or jus ce or love. Only if you experience your own emp ness how desperately you need the hungry, how far you s ll are from God. Blessed are the full, if you are always hungry. The Bea tudes Sermon by James Tissot Turn the Woes Around Walter Burghardt, SJ, Give Us This Day, February 2019 Blessed, fortunate, happy are you who are rich, rich in money or power, in talent or me, because you can do so much for the poor, can li the yoke of the oppressed. But blessed only if you have the mind of the poor, the mind of Christ. Only if you recognize that you may not do what you will with what you have. Only if you realize that you are stewards, that whatever you own you hold in trust. Only if you employ your power for peace, your wisdom to reconcile, your knowledge to open horizons, your compassion to heal, your hope to destroy despair. Blessed are you who laugh now, because you can bring the joy of Christ to others, to those whose days are woven of tears. But blessed only if you can laugh at yourselves, if you don t take yourselves too seriously, if human living doesn t revolve around you and your needs, your hiatus hernia and your latest rebuff. Only if you take delight in all God s crea on, in snow and star, in blue marlin and robin redbreast... in the presence of the Trinity within you. Only if laughter means that you let go let go of all that shackles you to yesterday, to dead hopes, imprisons you in your small selves. Blessed are you, because you are free. Walter Burghardt, SJ ( ), spent much of his career as a scholar of Church history and theology. He was a spellbinding preacher whose powerful calls for social jus ce and understanding influenced genera ons of priests and pastors. Pope Francis, Give Us This Day, March 2019 Blessed Are Those Blessed are those who remain faithful while enduring evils inflicted on them by others, and forgive them from their heart. Blessed are those who look into the eyes of the abandoned and marginalized, and show them their closeness. Blessed are those who see God in every person, and strive to make others also discover him. Blessed are those who protect and care for our common home. Blessed are those who renounce their own comfort in order to help others. Blessed are those who pray and work for full communion between Chris ans. All these are messengers of God s mercy and tenderness, and surely they will receive from him their merited reward.

4 ADULT FAITH ENRICHMENT Witness for Our Time BREAKING OPEN THE WORD: Dorothy Gauchat ( ) Co-founder of Our Lady of the Wayside in Avon, Ohio She is remembered on February 22. In Dorothy s own words: My husband Bill and I were literally drawn together by the spirit of Dorothy Day. Our marriage and our mission in life were shaped by her message: that Christ comes to us in the disguise of our neighbor. I first met Bill in the 1930s when he operated a Catholic Worker house of hospitality in Cleveland. A er our marriage, we se led on a farm in Avon, just west of Cleveland, where we raised three children and con nued to prac ce the works of mercy. A turning point came with a call from a Catholic hospital asking if we would care for a severely disabled infant, not expected to live. At first I resisted but then I was overwhelmed by the thought that this was one of God s immortal crea ons: hurt, yes; sick, yes; hopelessly handicapped, yes; but immortal. We took in the child and cared for him. From this small beginning, we found our lifelong voca on as foster parents to a stream of other children, most o en labeled as hopeless cases. In the case of one boy, severely disabled with cerebral palsy, we adopted him as our own son. When Bill was seemingly healed of terminal cancer following a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we undertook a new ambi ous plan, opening a home large enough to care for dozens of severely disabled children: Our Lady of the Wayside. Long a er my husband s death, I carried on with this mission. In 1987, I also founded a hospice for infants with HIV/AIDS, where I worked un l February Our faith supported our ac ons: If one does not love his neighbor, he cannot love God. These unwanted waifs are our neighbors. CORINTHIANS CHAPTER 15 Darwin Reeck, Master s in Pastoral Ministry Tuesday, February 19, Rooms 3 and 5 10:30 AM 12:00 PM In this final session, we con nue to explore Chapter 15 of Paul s First Le er to the Corinthians. We will study the passages from the le er prior to hearing them proclaimed on the upcoming Sunday. Please bring a Bible. Dewane Responding to "No-Limit Abor on" Law in New York Let us be reminded that all Life begins at the moment of Concep on, which for Catholics is not in dispute despite any new laws such as the recent law passed in New York State and introduced in the Virginia State Legislature. Regarding abor on, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of concep on. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life. Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abor on. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abor on, that is to say, abor on willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law." ( ) This should remind us that the killing of an innocent child through abor on is abhorrent. It is natural to want to speak out about such egregiousness, but first all are called to pray for an end to the scourge that is abor on. Pray also that our legislators and judges at the state and na onal levels stop celebra ng laws that will end the life of a child. If you disagree with laws such as the one recently passed in New York State, please write to your state and federal poli cians to share your thoughts, disagreement and disgust on this cri cal issue. Meaningful change pertaining to this ma er will not come un l all stand together to give a voice to the voiceless, the vulnerable unborn children who in some places can now poten ally face death up un l the moment of their birth. + Frank J. Dewane Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida

6 YOUTH CORNER Taking Your Children to Mass Isn t Always Easy But It s Worth It By Beth Meleski, America, May 9, 2016 (Cartoon: Bob Eckstein) These days, when my family arrives at 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass (usually fast-walking in just as our celebrant starts up the aisle), my husband and I can be relatively secure in the knowledge that we will make it through the service without incident. This was not always the case, and one Sunday morning, not long ago, those more capricious days were brought back to me. The woman in front of my family was heavily pregnant with her second child. Her oldest was a lively and curious 2-year-old. The toddler colored quietly through the readings and snacked on impossibly tiny and uniformly cut pieces of fruit through the parable of the barren fig tree. During the collection she found her lovey an item often given to provide a child with comfort deep in the recesses of her mother s purse and settled in for a cuddle. By the time of the consecration, however, she wanted only to tap dance on the pew as we kneeled. I watched as the mother made a face at her husband. I heard her exasperated whisper, She s being so bad today. I stifled a smile as the little girl scooted out of their reach with a giggle. By the end of the Mass, the 2-year-old was frantic and her mother exhausted. I could relate. Once upon a time, I had two toddlers, just a year apart in age, so the look on that mother s face and the slump in her shoulders were muscle memory to me. I stopped the mother after Mass as she shrugged into her coat and collected the crayons scattered around her pew. The father already had led the little girl out, anxious for damage control. She looked at me guardedly, probably steeling herself to be berated or criticized for her daughter s behavior. It s worth it, I said to her, Bringing her to church each week. It s worth it. She apologized anyway, She s usually so much better. I don t know what got into her today. To start with, I thought, she s 2. She has a 10-minute attention span, but has been asked to remain still and quiet for over an hour. Instead I responded, She did great. As I told the mother to have a good week and turned to find my own brood, my youngest child raced past me on her way to play tag in the grass outside the church with her friends. I made a halfhearted effort to slow her down to a more dignified pace. But in truth, I was delighted that she felt comfortable enough in this place to let her hair down. She is not disrespectful, only joyful. Over the years, and still today, we choose, time and again, to brave the wrath of children awakened too early on a weekend morning, in order that we might continue to attend Mass as a family. There are still Masses in which arms remain crossed and frowns never budge. There are Sundays when my husband and I must insert ourselves between feuding children. During these mornings I, like the owner of the fig tree, wonder if the fragile buds we are nurturing will continue to bear fruit. But on that Sunday morning, I wiped away a tear and silently repeated the words I said to that mother: It s worth it.
