Baptism Riley Theresa Nelson, daughter of Ryan Nelson & Mary Beth (Runtz) McGing-Nelson Wedding Banns I Michael Polizzi & Eliana Melecio II John Nixon & Jessie Stachulski III Justin Loftus & Barbara Przybylowicz Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah, writing several centuries before Christ, tells the story, My friend had a vineyard on a fertile hillside and planted the choicest vines. The vineyard was well cared for but did not produce the intended crop of grapes, but wild grapes instead. He asks, What more was there to do for my vineyard that I had not yet done? The owner then says he will let the vineyard be destroyed because it did not produce good fruit. This is a parable of God s kingdom and a warning to the people to reform. St. Paul tells the Philippians to have no anxiety at all. He says this can be achieved through continuous prayer to God who will guard them. Paul then tells them to imitate him and to do whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and gracious. If they do these things then God will be with them. In the gospel Jesus tells the religious leaders the parable of the landowner who leases his vineyard to tenant farmers who beat or kill the owners servants sent to collect from them at harvest time. The owner finally sends his son to make the collection, thinking, They will respect my son. When the son is killed, Jesus asks the religious leaders what they think the vineyard owner s response will be. They answer that the tenants will be destroyed and replaced with new tenants. Jesus shocks the religious leaders by saying to them that they are the tenants in the story and that the kingdom of God will be taken from them and given to a people who will produce good fruit. Isaiah 5:1-7 Philippians 4:6-9 Matthew 21:33-43 Respect Life Month October is a month that Catholics have traditionally devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of God made flesh in Christ Jesus, the mother of the Church, and spiritual mother to each of us. Throughout the Archdiocese we honor the Blessed Mother by promoting the dignity of all human life and by making a conscious effort to bring peace and justice to all our relationships. As we celebrate Respect Life Sunday, we should all ask ourselves how well we promote a respect for life in the way we talk about others, the way we talk to others, the ways we treat our family and friends as well as the strangers, the marginalized and others whose beliefs we do not share, be they political, religious or social.

3 October 2, 2011 Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures tell us about God s invitation to us to participate in his kingdom and our response to that invitation. Our response to God has definite consequences on the salvation of our souls in this life and where we will spend the rest of eternity. The prophet Isaiah tells the parable of the vineyard that produced only wild grapes even though the vine dresser had given it the finest care. Wild grapes are sour and unfit to eat. He tells them that the vineyard is the House of Israel which will be trampled under foot. In the gospel Jesus tells the parable of the wicked tenants who would not pay the owner of the vineyard his share of the produce. The tenants beat or killed the owner s servants and finally killed his son as well. In response, the owner of the vineyard will send his wrath upon the tenants and destroy them. The context of the gospel is that of Holy Week. Jesus has entered Jerusalem in triumph and is teaching in the temple precincts. This parable immediately follows last week s parable of the two sons sent to work in their father s vineyard. Jesus is hammering home the point that verbal assent to faith is not enough for salvation. The faithful must also walk in the path of righteousness, responding to the law of God by producing the good fruits of peace and justice and compassion. He has no time for subtlety since he knows that he is going to suffer his passion and death in a few days. In fact, in this parable he warns the leaders that they are going to kill him and that it is going to cost them dearly. He calls them wretched men who will suffer a wretched death and that the kingdom of God will be taken away from them. This is a warning for us also. The scriptures continually call us to act righteously by being generous in thought, word and deed. We are called to take care of the poor and the needy. How we treat others will be the measure by which we are judged by God. St. Paul reminds us that the way to salvation is to think about the things that God has taught us, that which is true, honorable, just, pure, gracious and worthy of praise. And then, he says, we are to keep on doing what we have learned and received. In the context of Respect Life Sunday, the scriptures call us to act justly toward the unborn, the terminally ill, the defenseless and the marginalized. Life is a gift from God for which we are all responsible. This includes, among others, the unborn babies, the infirm, those on death row, the outsider and the immigrant. The Church also teaches a preferential option for the poor as a reminder to consider the legitimate needs of others above our own comforts and preferences when making our decisions. Some of the issues highlighted this month are the rights of the unborn, Inclusion awareness for those of disabilities, support of the Dream Act for the children of undocumented immigrants and support for missionary efforts working with the poorest of the poor throughout the world. It was a pleasure to have Michael Grzesik back with us last weekend to share his vocation journey. Thank you for your prayers and generosity. The Graziano Night fundraiser will be held this Monday, October 3rd from 4-10 p.m. Graziano s will donate 25% of the dinner and beverage cost for everyone who identifies themselves as a St. Robert s parishioner to our school. Last fall we raised over $400 simply by going out to eat with family and friends. The School will host We Love Our Kids Day this Tuesday, October 4th. There will be a special program for the families in the lunchroom and projects in the classrooms with the children. We will also celebrate mass at 9:15 a.m. All are welcome. Also on Tuesday there will be a special Pet Blessing in honor of St. Francis of Assisi at 3 p.m. in the back parking lot. The Harvest Gala honoring our Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur will be celebrated on Saturday, October 15 beginning with the 5 p.m. mass followed by the social in the gym and school. More information can be found on page five. Tickets are available after all masses. Earlier that day we will celebrate our annual Healing Mass with Anointing of the Sick at 10a.m. followed by refreshments in the hall. Please pick up a Baby Bottle as you leave church today, fill it with your change, dollar bills or a check and return it to the rectory or the church by October 23. All funds collected will go to the Women s Center to assist them in their work with families in crisis pregnancy. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

4 Page Four Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2011 The Roman Missal Changes: Give it To Me Straight: The Liturgy of the Word As we continue our reflections on the new Roman Missal translation, we next move into the Liturgy of the Word. Except for the Gospel dialogues The Lord be with you. And with your spirit and A reading from the Holy Gospel according to N. Glory to you, O Lord nothing will be changing in regard to the Scripture readings, Responsorial Psalm, and Gospel Acclamation. The Profession of Faith, however? Now, THAT S another story. Perhaps some of the most significant changes will be noticed in the Nicene Creed. Roman Missal Changes to the Creed The first change that we encounter in the Nicene Creed is the changing of We to I from the plural to the singular. This is not to diminish our sense of community but is simply a more accurate translation of the word Credo I believe. The reciting of the Creed is a communal act;, however, each individual in the assembly is called upon to profess his or her own faith just as he or she did in Baptism. Our individual profession is then joined together with the profession of the whole assembly. Seen and Unseen Changes in the Roman Missal Next, the words of all that is seen and unseen will become of all things visible and invisible. There is a difference between something that is unseen and something that is invisible. Something may be unseen for a number of reasons, including an obstacle in our line of vision. Something invisible, however, is clearly unable to be seen with the naked eye, for example, the saints and angels who occupy a place in our worship. They are not just unseen but invisible. The second part of the Creed, which deals with our beliefs in Jesus Christ, has a number of changes in the new Roman Missal: the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages the words Only Begotten also appear in the Gloria and express our belief that Jesus did not simply materialize as the Son of God but was intentionally begotten by the Father as part of his divine plan. The words born of the Father before all ages emphasize that Jesus dwelled with the Father before time began. consubstantial with the Father this replaces the phrase one in being in describing the relationship between the Father and the Son. The early Church labored intensely to find the correct words to define Jesus relationship with the Father. Consubstantial, while an unusual word in English, means literally having the same substance, which is more technically accurate than one in being. To be sure, it s an unusual word, but then again it is describing someone and something unusual and unique: Jesus Christ and his relationship with the Father. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary here, the word incarnate replaces born. To be born describes the moment of birth. To be incarnate describes the moment of conception: the Word became incarnate became flesh in Mary s womb. he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures while the Latin word for suffered implies death, the same is not true in English. As a result, we ve been using two verbs: suffered and died. Now, we will use only one verb suffered while adding the word death to make it clear in English that Jesus indeed died. The word accordance with the Scriptures is simply more precise than the word fulfillment. In the last part of the Nicene Creed, as we profess our faith in the Holy Spirit, we will say with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, which is a more precise translation of the Latin than the words worshipped and glorified. A little later, instead of saying we acknowledge one baptism, we will now say I confess one baptism. To confess, which means to express belief in, is a more forceful expression than to acknowledge because it implies involving both the heart and the head. And last but not least, we will say the words I look forward to the resurrection of the dead instead of we look for This expresses eagerness as well as confidence that the resurrection of the dead is indeed going to happen. In our next article, as we continue to explore the new Roman Missal translation, we will reflect on the changes in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Your help is needed to write the St. Robert Bellarmine Parish Mission Statement What makes our St. Robert Bellarmine Parish Community unique? What values do you see here, how can we grow? These questions are at the heart of how any parish understands its mission and plans its future. A Parish Mission Statement expresses the purpose of a parish. It helps the parish identify itself as a community of faith and gives direction for the future efforts of the parish. The Parish Mission Statement is to be inspirational, motivational and give overall direction for parish life activities. It explains the reasons why a parish exists with words that are straightforward and meaningful to the people of the community. It is meant to be understood and used by the parish as it sets its goals and strives to be faithful to the mission entrusted by Christ: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the Good News to all of creation". (Mark 16:15) Encouraging the development of a Parish Mission Statement and periodically reviewing and revising it is a function of a Parish Pastoral Council. But all parishioners participate in the mission of the Church and the whole parish is involved in the development of the Mission Statement. There will be a number of ways that parishioners will be invited to participate in the development of our St. Robert Bellarmine Mission Statement. This weekend and next, all parishioners are invited to fill out a feedback form. All parish organizations and Commissions will also be asked to fill out these forms at one of their meetings in October or November. Parish Pastoral Council members will be available to come to those meetings to talk about the process and facilitate discussion. During Advent some preliminary responses and statements will be posted in the bulletin for additional feedback. Then the Parish Pastoral Council will finalize the Parish Mission Statement on their retreat day in January. When the Parish Mission Statement is finished, all parishioners and parish organizations will be asked to reflect on how their work at St. Robert Bellarmine is shaped by and challenged by this Mission Statement. The Parish Pastoral Council with the help of the Commissions will continue the Pastoral Council with the help of the Commissions will continue the pastoral planning process by assessing the parish's strengths and needs and by setting broad goals and priorities which are rooted in the Mission Statement. Please take a moment this week to fill out one of the Parish Mission Statement Feedback forms. They can be found in your pews at church, or you can use the one below and return it to the rectory. Thank you for your help! We Would Like Your Input St. Robert Bellarmine is a unique and caring community and the Parish Pastoral Council would like to envision our future through a parish mission statement. As we begin the process of writing one, we would appreciate your input. Please take a moment to answer the questions below. Thank you. What makes our St. Robert Bellarmine Parish community unique? What values do you see evident in our St. Robert Bellarmine Parish community? In what ways would you like to see our St. Robert Bellarmine community continuing to grow?

7 October 2, 2011 Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Seven The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has stated its support for the Dream Act. Now they invite all of us to do what we can to make it a reality. Thousands of hard working people who were brought to the United States as children want to go to college, live the American Dream and become contributing citizens. Instead they are detained and deported to countries they ve never known. The DREAM Act would stop the injustice by giving students who have grown up and graduated high school in the United States the opportunity to earn legal status through higher education or military service. President Obama also has the executive authority to protect vulnerable population including DREAM Act eligible students and parents of citizen children from unwarranted detention and deportation. Take Park in DREAM Actions! Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me: and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me (Mk 9:37). Put your faith into action to support our DREAMers: Go to to send the following postcard electronically to President Obama: Dear President Obama, grateful for you recent shift in policy and support for noncriminal undocumented immigrants, we urge you to protect vulnerable populations, especially DREAM Act eligible youth, from deportation by supporting the DREAM Act. As Catholics, we support the DREAM Act because we believe in protecting the dignity of all humans being, allowing everyone to reach their God given potential. This weekend our church will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God s Grace, The Women s Centers have saved over 33,000 babies and their mothers from abortion since opening in Please take a Baby Bottle home with you and fill it with your spare change. Please return the Baby Bottle to the rectory or give it to a usher at church on or before October 23, This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women s Centers. Thank you for helping defend life, and remember to keep all prolife undertakings in your prayers. Deacons in the Catholic Church Deacons are referred to as transitional or permanent. Transitional deacons are in the process of moving toward priesthood. Permanent deacons (who may be married and have families) are on a distinct path to remaining as a deacon permanently. Their role and function is different from priests. Deacons assist at liturgies, proclaim the gospel, preach, evangelize in the workplace and help the poor and needy in direct ways.
