May blessings come to all who follow the way of Mary: mothers & grandmothers stepmothers & godmothers adoptive mothers & mothers of the heart. May each find joy and grace in her calling: giving life & to sustaining it, treasuring the world in her heart, & suckling redemption at her breast. 2 The Eucharist: Jesus Last Will and Testament Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them unto thy soul with hoops of steel... ~William Shakespeare In Shakespeare s elegant play, Hamlet, lies a memorable scene, the verses of which have been committed to the memories of many a Jesuit high school student. It is Polonius farewell advice to his son, Laertes, as he embarks on an adventure. It is filled with pithy sayings and advice that has come down to us today piecemeal. You may recognize: To thine own self be true, and it must follow as night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man (sic). Neither a borrower nor a lender be. Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel. Jesus does something similar in the Gospel passage we heard today. He is offering his farewell to his closest friends and disciples before he departs from them. His words are his final instructions and advice to them. It is his last meal with them before he is arrested which leads to his ultimate death, burial, and subsequent resurrection. This section of a long monologue by Jesus focuses on his pledge to them, his promise. He goes to prepare a place for them in his Father s house, but lets them know that he will return to take them with him, so they may be where he is. This entire aspect of promise and pledge, of covenant and binding, runs like a golden thread through all the Scriptures. God s promises keep being fulfilled, even though the Chosen People continue to be eerily unfaithful. Even though the disciples doubt. A significant aspect of this lengthy conversation with his disciples is that it takes place at the last supper. In John we have no description of Jesus taking bread and wine and giving it to them as his Body and Blood at this meal. But understood in John s gospel is that Eucharist is presented in the feeding of the people and the discourse that follows about the bread of life. I am the bread of life. If you eat my flesh and drink my blood you will have life in you. This is the promise, the pledge, that is fulfilled every single time we celebrate the Eucharist. Eucharist is where we come face to face with the Risen Christ, with Christ the Son of God, with the Spirit Christ has sent to open our hearts and minds to his invitations and call. Jesus promised he would return. It is in Eucharist that Jesus fulfills his promise to us. 2

4 Spring into Action Today we see spring has arrived and the winter has let go of Missoula. What a great time to start a new exercise and fitness plan to honor our bodies and our faith. We can go outside, be active, and engage our bodies and minds in healthy activities for ourselves and to the service of others. Just as the apostles were called to go out and spread the message we can also spread the message and reach out into our beautiful community and make a difference. Walking to work, riding bikes as a family, hiking the M, picking up trash on the way are all ways to make our community a beautiful place as well as get our bodies in shape. Meeting with a friend once a week to walk along the river, taking bike rides or hikes together are fun activities, which create connection and develop friendships.
