Parish Listening Session Once again, on behalf of the Church, and in union with our Holy Father, Cardinal Cupich, our bishops, and my fellow priests, I wish to express my deepest sorrow and regret to all who have been victimized by the scourge of clerical sexual abuse. It has truly been a dark chapter in our Church s history and despite the pain involved, it is so important that it be faced directly, honestly, prayerfully and with firm resolve to ensure that nothing like this can ever happen again. The victimization certainly is felt greatest by those who have suffered directly at the hands of perpetrators and those who have bravely and steadfastly sought to bring light to the darkness. It is shared also by all the faithful, lay and clergy, who love their Church and are shocked, horrified and dismayed not only at the crimes that have occurred, but by the manner in which they have been handled/mishandled. The pain is real. Fr. Matt and I have listened to individuals who have expressed a desire to talk about this crisis. We are wondering if it would be helpful to provide a forum for any others who may wish to speak about it aloud in company with others. Bishop Bartosic, our Vicar, is very supportive of this and is asking all parishes to do the same. If you would like to share in a Listening Session attended by fellow parishioners and your parish priests, please come to Paluch Hall on Tuesday, February 5th at 7pm. The purpose is to give parishioners an opportunity to make their voice heard regarding the crisis and the Church s response. If the opportunity presents itself to clarify some of the steps the Church has taken or to correct misinformation, that may be involved. The purpose, however, is truly and simply to listen. Some Clarification One of the frustrations I continue to have with news regarding this crisis is the sensationalization and misinformation involved in some of the reporting that can serve to thwart healing and progress. Without in any way intending to be defensive, but simply by way of clarification, it might be helpful to keep the following in mind regarding the most recent report of the Illinois Attorney General: The Attorney General s report relates to the entire State of Illinois, not the Archdiocese of Chicago alone. The allegations concerning 500 clergy cited in the report include clergy from all six dioceses in Illinois over many decades; include all allegations made including those that were determined to be unsubstantiated; and include allegations made when the priest was deceased. Starting in 2002, the Archdiocese has reported every allegation of child sexual abuse to civil authorities and, at that time, reported all historical allegations, and copies of same were provided to the Attorney General s staff. The Archdiocese has been a leader in working to develop strong policies and procedures to heal victims and to prevent abuse since Every person who comes forward with an allegation is offered the services of our Victim Assistance Ministry. An independent review board deems an allegation to be substantiated if it is determined that there is reason to suspect that abuse occurred, a very broad standard. The Archdiocese has a robust safe environment program aimed at preventing abuse. Every employee and every volunteer are screened and attend training, as do children, in recognizing, resisting and reporting abuse. Please continue to pray for the healing of all victims of abuse and for true reforms. Have a blessed week,
