Be Not Afraid This past week we celebrated both the Solemnity of All Saints and the Feast of All Souls (Commemoration of the Faithful Departed). We prayerfully remembered those who have gone before us, reaffirming our faith in Christ s victory over death and Christ s bountiful mercy. We celebrated the saints who now share eternally in God s life and we prayed for those who have died and are yet on the journey. We will continue to do so throughout the month of November. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. At Thursday evening s Mass we specifically named those who have died this past year and inviting their families and friends in prayerful remembrance. Our hearts and prayers go out to all those for whom the pain of the loss of their loved one is especially acute. Celebration of these feasts might also serve us well by providing us the opportunity to reflect on our own mortality and assess where we are on the journey. One of the more popular hymns of modern times, and one that is consistently requested at Masses for our deceased loved ones, was written by John Michael Talbot and is entitled, Be Not Afraid. You may recall the refrain, Be not afraid. I go before you always. Come, follow me. And I will give you rest. Throughout his public ministry Jesus instructed his disciples to not be afraid. When I was blessed to take a group of young people to World Youth Day in Denver, CO, many years ago, Pope (Saint) John Paul II repeated this refrain over and over again to the youth, Be Not Afraid. It seems to me to be an especially poignant message in our times as we consider the constant threat of terrorist actions, nuclear arms build-up, political insecurity, even natural disasters. All around there seems to be a heightened sense of fear. Whatever our world issues and our personal issues, we need to constantly be reminded to not be afraid. We are in good hands. The Lord loves each one of us beyond anything we can imagine. Awareness of that love should inspire in us a deep sense of trust. This trust, then, is the basis for our hope for the future. This doesn t mean, of course, that we aren t duly concerned about matters that pose danger and threat. We certainly need to give due attention and focus to them, particularly as regards our spiritual lives. But we are not to live in worry and fear. We place our needs and offer our best efforts always with faithful trust in God. When we do we find rest or peace deep within even in the midst of the storm. Have a blessed week,

Halloween has passed and soon comes our American special day Thanksgiving!! A great tradition on which day we share with those who are not as fortunate as ourselves. We will soon be asking your help again. We know you will be there for us with turkeys, yams, cranberry sauce, canned corn, canned beans, etc., etc. Stay tuned, Saint Vincent De Paul Society TURNING PLASTIC BAGS INTO SLEEPING MATS FOR THE HOMELESS This ministry is a project that many people young and old can do from their home. Clean grocery bags are recycled, folded and cut into loops, then tied with slip knots to form a long string called plarn which is then rolled up into balls. These are then used to crochet into sleeping mats which provide insulation and protection from the damp ground, etc. A reference is If you are interested in helping with any part of this or have questions please call Marisue Merchut at CALLING ALL BAKERS! Next Saturday and Sunday the Queen of Peace Guild will sponsor the Holiday Craft & Bake Sale. The Guild would gladly welcome home-baked goodies from all the bakers in the parish. If you remember our November meeting last year, we all sampled delicious appetizers from the Sunset Grill, so please come either alone, or better yet, bring your friends! Remember the deadline for donating gift cards, wine, service cards, and large baskets to be used for the Christmas party raffle is November 15th. Tickets will be on sale for our fabulous Christmas party on December 12th at Fairview Banquets for $40. CWC Board Dates to Make Note of on the Horizon The Christmas Giving Tree - will be up, ready with ornaments to take on Thanksgiving Day. The gifts are for our friends at St. Mary of Providence, St. Malachy and OLR s Shut-Ins. Gifts are to be returned, Sunday, December 10. Soup Kitchen - Once again we will be serving our guests at Our Lady of Lourdes Soup Kitchen on Wednesday, November 22. We will serve a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
