The last two Tuesday evenings were great. Bishop Barron s presentation on the seven deadly sins and converse lively virtues was insightful and practical. Many were deeply engaged and moved this past Tuesday by the music, Scripture, silence and candlelight setting of our gathering for Taize prayer. And, of course, we had another outstanding Fish Fry replete with delicious food and warm fellowship. Many thanks to our 7th and 8th graders who took our orders and served us; to those who sold tickets in advance and that evening; and to our Men s Club who do such a terrific job in the kitchen and enjoy doing it. Don t miss out on upcoming events including this Tuesday s Family Reconciliation Service and our second (and final Lenten) Fish Fry on Friday, March 9th. Ticket s are on sale this weekend. Craig Hulfachor and Jeffrey Viloria have been praying, discerning and studying with our R.C.I.A. team in preparation to be received into the Church at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. It is an exciting time for them and for all of us. We ask that you keep Craig, Jeffrey and their families in your prayers and help us to extend to them a warm joy-filled welcome! My name is Jeffrey. I work as a Registered Nurse. My heritage is Filipino, however I grew up in Chicago my whole life. I was raised Catholic and have practiced the religion. I came to R.C.I.A. because I have not been confirmed. Although my reason for coming might not be ideal, but I truly do appreciate that I did come and have participated throughout the whole process because everyone has taught me a lot about life and reaffirmed my Catholic faith that ai will continue to carry on and learn from as I continue my journey to my upcoming marriage and hopefully a family of my own. Sincerely, Jeffrey Viloria The following is a brief biography. I wish to express my gratitude to Father Chris and Deacon Charlie, and all the members of our instructional group (Ed, Lucille, and Jeff) as well as Father Andrew, for the fellowship, insights, and encouragement. Being part of the body of Christ is now a living reality for me. I grew up in (at that time) the farm country of Dekalb County, in a small town about 60 miles west of Chicago. My father s forebears, who came to America in the 1730s, were German Methodists, and I was raised as a Methodist, though never formally baptized or confirmed. I lost connection with my religious upbringing when I attended college for quite some time and trained as an academic in the liberal arts, specializing in the discipline of Philosophy, with an undergraduate background in English. I taught for several years in a university as a philosophy instructor, then more recently as a part-time adjunct in writing courses for graduate students in the social sciences. I currently work as a paralegal in State government. In terms of family life, I have been happily married for 17 years and have a lovely 15 year old daughter, who attends Whitney Young High School. As a remnant of my days on the farm, I still have a great love of animals and the natural world in general, which is now focused on our two cats, a recently added dog, my daughter s leopard gecko, and gardening. Our home is located in the Oriole Park neighborhood, not far from the Harlem Blue Line train station, and about 4.5 miles from Our Lady of Ransom Church. After my decision to convert to Catholicism, I asked one of my Catholic friends in the court system if she knew of a good church not too far from my home. It turned out that one of her friends lived in Niles and attended Our Lady of Ransom Church; I spoke with this person, and she had great things to say about the church and Father Chris, so I got in contact with him, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, here I am. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. The Archdiocese allows 2 Masses per week to be multiple intention Masses. These will be celebrated each Tuesday and Saturday at 8:15a.m. There will be a limit to one Sunday Mass per calendar month (12 Sunday Masses per year.) There is no limit to weekday Masses.

And, as usual, we will be preparing an Easter Sunday dinner basket for the poor in our area, complete with ham, yams, instant potatoes, canned corn, beans, pineapples, and some other treats for the children. We won t be packing the baskets until Wednesday, March 28th. There will be more notices soon, but please be prepared since we will need your help once more in making this come true. Lenten Almsgiving Special Collection This year for our Lenten almsgiving, we are partnering with the Catholic Extension Society (C.E.S.). C.E.S. was founded by Father Francis Clement Kelly. During his travels to frontier America, Fr. Kelly recognized that Catholics in geographically isolated areas did not have access to church buildings, or the regular presence of Catholic priests. Without weekly Mass or the sacraments, Catholics in these areas had little participation in the life of the church, and struggled to keep their faith alive and growing. In 1905, Father Kelley organized the Catholic Church Extension Society now recognized as Catholic Extension to raise money that would help bring the Catholic Church to these isolated faith communities. Originally headquartered in Lapeer, Michigan, the Catholic Church Extension Society was granted a charter by the state, highlighting a mission to construct church buildings, support priests, and develop the missionary spirit in Catholics across the United States. This mission first travelled across the country by way of the railways. Priests rode into tiny frontier towns to celebrate Mass and distribute the Eucharist from the back of Catholic Extension s three rail cars. In places inaccessible by this mode of transportation, Catholic Extension sent motor chapels. Today they continue the mission started by Father Kelley though the ways they serve have multiplied to meet the changing needs of the Church. Since 1905, Catholic Extension has contributed more than $500 million ($1.2 billion in today's dollars) to poor mission dioceses across the United States dioceses where the faith is thriving but the resources are scarce. Today, Catholic Extension s support reaches over 11 million Catholics in poor mission diocese across the U.S. Under the leadership of Catholic Extension President Father Jack Wall, C.E. S. is providing funding to strengthen and support poor mission dioceses in the United States so they can become self-sustaining. This weekend, Matt Paolelli (OLR parishioner) who works for C.E.S. will speak at all the Masses and explain more about the great work being accomplished through C.E.S. In lieu of Rice Bowls we will take up a special collection to support this important and invaluable cause. Thank you for your generosity.
