3 April 30, 2017 Third Sunday of Easter Page Three From the desk of the Pastor... First Holy Communion In the midst of our Easter joy, how wonderful it is that our First Communicants will receive our Lord in the Holy Eucharist for the first time this upcoming Saturday. We congratulate these precious little ones and pray that they will always know how much Jesus loves them and always treasure the tremendous gift of our Lord s presence to them in the Blessed Sacrament. In a special way we welcome their families and friends who will celebrate with them at this important milestone in their faith lives. Let us also allow this celebration to stir us to a deeper appreciation of the unspeakable gift we too often take for granted of our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. Please Thank Our Governor Cardinal Cupich recently issued a public thanks to Gov. Bruce Rauner for his promise to veto House Bill 40 if it reaches his desk. I also contacted the Governor s office to do the same and encourage you to do so as well. The controversial legislation would allow taxpayer money to be used to pay for elective abortions a provision that is currently prohibited by state law. The State of Illinois is broke and hasn t passed a balanced budget in 2 years and this is how our legislature is choosing to spend our tax dollars! Gov. Rauner last week, through a spokesperson, promised to veto the bill if it passes the Illinois Legislature. Cardinal Cupich issued the following statement: Last Friday, Governor Rauner promised to veto House Bill 40. This legislation, which is pending in the General Assembly, would use public dollars, through Illinois Medicaid and employee health insurance programs, to fund elective abortions at any stage of pregnancy for any reason. I thank him for this principled stand. Abortion is a controversial issue in this country, but using public money to provide abortions should not be. The federal government prohibits the practice, and polls show a substantial segment of the American public rejects it. I pray that this divisive issue will be put behind us and our government officials will now concentrate on the many difficult challenges facing Illinois. Most importantly, our political leaders must find a way to cooperate and craft a budget that serves all our people. It is essential that we unite in this effort, and I stand ready to help in any way. HB 40 also deletes so-called "trigger" language in current Illinois law that states that if the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade is ever overturned, the "former policy of this State to prohibit abortions unless necessary for the preservation of the mother's life shall be reinstated." Sadly, this past Wednesday, HB 40 passed the House on a vote, including a Yea vote from Representative John D Amico (D) whom I contacted and urged to vote otherwise. The bill now moves to the Illinois Senate for consideration. Please see below information on how to write or phone the Governor to express your thanks for his promise to veto House Bill 40. Gov. Bruce Rauner OR Gov. Bruce Rauner 207 State House James R. Thompson Center Springfield, IL W. Randolph, Phone: Chicago, IL Phone: Have a blessed week,

5 April 30, 2017 Third Sunday of Easer Page Five THANK YOU! Your response to our request was, as usual, almost overwhelming. The thank you s that we were given for making their Easter especially joyful this year were gratifying to hear. And the credit for all this goes to parishioners such as yourselves. They thanked us and we thank you. There are of course some items that we are in short supply such as canned peas, mixed veggies, chili, Spaghetti O s and instant potatoes. Please continue to be generous. Saint Vincent de Paul Society MOMS HELPING MOMS Mark your calendar for our final meeting of the year on Thursday, May 11 at 7:00pm in Room 5. As always we will have wine, cheese and great conversation. We will also be joined by Tina Haisman, a master life coach and local speaker. Tina will discuss... How to Communicate with Your Husband to Invite More Love. Through her 21 years of marriage Tina has learned that men and women communicate very differently. So many times when a woman thinks she is saying one thing, her husband hears something very different. This causes a lot of stress in a marriage. In this talk, Tina delivers her top communication secrets to break down those communication barriers and bring more love into your relationship. Come and bring a friend! All Moms are welcome! Did You Get Rid of Your Landline or Move? If you eliminated your home phone s landline, kindly call us at the Ministry Center ( ) so we can update your family registration information. 7 April 30, 2017 Third Sunday of Easer Page Seven CHANGE OF DATE Our last meeting of the year, and our Annual Potluck is Tuesday, May 16th. We will start the evening with holy Mass at 6:30p.m. where our Woman of the Year will be honored. There were three worthy women nominated, and each one will be recognized for their devotion to helping others. Eleanor Laraia will crown the Blessed Mother as Audrey Scholly (former Woman of the Year) wishes her well and hands the flowered crown to Eleanor; while we will sing the old familiar hymns in honor of Mary. A Blessed Tradition! We know we have many talented cooks and bakers in our Parish! So please be thinking about one of your favorite potluck dishes to bring to our final meeting. It s always amazing to see and taste the delicious and varied potluck items we receive. Remember to label with ingredients (especially if your choice has nuts in it) and include your name. WOMAN OF THE YEAR Eleanor Laraia has lived in the area for more than fifty years, and is one of Our Lady of Ransom s founding members. As soon as the church was built and dedicated, Eleanor and her family became active members of the parish. photo Eleanor was a force in starting the Catholic Women s Club and her participation of over five decades of devotion to her church and the Club are too numerous to list, but some of the highlights of her fifty-seven years as a parishioner are: a member of the Ave Maria Guild, and as President of the guild she helped to organize the first craft show; in she served as President of the CWC; she modeled at this year s Fashion Show as she has many times throughout the years; she serves as a Lector at the Sunday nine o clock Mass; previously was a Communion Minister, she ran the Irish Room at the Kaleidoscope; currently serves as co-chair of the CWC Hospitality Committee; and is sharing her time and talent as this year s Vice President of the CWC. Eleanor is always the first to volunteer for the many tasks the CWC experiences each year, and her quiet demeanor is misleading as she is a dynamo while working with others or just by herself. You can always count on her to be there when volunteers are needed. No job is too small or too big for Eleanor and she continues to be a great asset to her church and our Club. Her years of devotion and service make her a worthy candidate, and it is our pleasure to name her as our 2017 Woman of the Year.
