1 October, Month of the Rosary Our Lady of the Rosary of Chinquiquirá Patroness of Colombia Traditionally the Catholic Church has dedicated October as the Month of the Holy Rosary. Why do Catholics pray the Holy Rosary? According to the tradition, Our Mother appeared to St. Dominic in 1206 after doing severe penances in order to have success against the heresy people. Mary praised him for his valiant fight against the heretics and then gave him the Rosary as a mighty weapon, explained its uses and efficacy, and told him to preach it to others. Since the XIII Century the prayer of the Holy Rosary has been an important prayer in the life of the Catholics. Originally the Holy Rosary had three mysteries: Joyful Mystery (1. The Annunciation of the Lord; 2. The Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth; 3. The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ; 4. The presentation of Our Lord; 5. Finding child Jesus in the temple), Sorrowful Mystery (1. The Agony of Jesus in the Garden; 2. The Scourging at the Pillar; 3. Jesus is Crowned with Thorns; 4. Jesus Carried the Cross; 5. The Crucifixion of our Lord), and the glorious Mystery (1. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ; 2. The Ascension of Jesus to Heaven; 3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit; 4. The Assumption of Mary into Heaven; 5. Mary is crowned as Queen of Heaven and Earth). In October 2002 Pope St. John Paul II in his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, recommended an additional set called the Luminous Mysteries (or the "Mysteries of Light") (1. The Baptism in the Jordan; 2. The Wedding at Cana; 3. The Proclamation of the Kingdom; 4. The Transfiguration; 5. The Institution of the Eucharist). In the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary we not only repeat fifty times the beautiful prayer of Hail Mary, but we also reflect on the life, Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Our Lord. We pray and meditate in company of Our Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mystery of our faith. Hopefully we pray the Holy Rosary at home or in Church with our families and friends. If you do not want to pray alone the Holy Rosary, remember that our community of Our Lady of the Lakes has a rosary group who gather together on Mondays at 4:00 p.m. to pray and meditate this beautiful prayer. October should not be the only month dedicated to the Holy Rosary, but it should be every day. Let us pray the Holy Rosary at all time.
