3 August 28, 2016 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three From the desk of the Pastor... Having read the following reflection, I thought it might be most fitting to offer for Father s Day or the Feast of St. Joseph. Both are many months away... and it s always the right time to reflect on how God s grace works in and through our vocations. I hope you enjoy. Have a blessed week, Joseph, Do Something By Ricky J. McRoskey University of Notre Dame 06 It s surprising the details you remember from particularly horrifying personal experiences. The one that sticks out for me involves my daughter s teeth such tiny, white, stubby little teeth. The scene was something like this: It was a week after Veronica s first birthday, and my wife and I were in the backyard of a friend s house standing over our baby girl as she lay in her stroller. We d just finished saying the rosary with a group of families from our parish and were looking forward to some well-deserved hamburgers and beers as dusk approached. Some of the other kids raced around the yard in sundresses or baseball caps and it felt like summer barbeque, thick air, kids, ticks lurking in the grass. But Veronica didn t look quite right. She appeared tired, but not a normal kind of tired. Her look was foggy, as if she were too exhausted to shut her eyes. Her gaze, the type of look that she d had since she was a newborn, one that pierces you with its wonder and curiosity that gaze was gone. It was distant, more distant, too distant and then Veronica s eyes rolled back and she stopped responding to anything, even our shouts. Our friends called an ambulance. Seconds later, she was lying limp on the ground and my wife was performing rescue breaths on her as her face turned blue and we were praying to her guardian angel, to the Blessed Mother, to anyone in heaven who would hear us in this awful hour. And then, in that moment, I saw those perfect little teeth, resting atop gums that had suddenly turned purple, and it all looked so wrong. No, no. No, Veronica. Veronica, please. * * * * * Joseph of Nazareth was a carpenter. If you ve ever been around a carpenter, something becomes quickly evident: They are two people in one. On the one hand, they embody this beautiful, simple strength of manhood. Their hands are hard and tough, swollen with power. Their forearms are trapezoids. They know their tools like their own children each with its beautiful quirks and a unique story. Used that one to make the maple chair for the Stewarts. That one carved the recipe box for mom. Their toolshop is their kingdom, and they preside over it as a king with humility, with respect, with skill and, by God, with power. They plan, they draw, they sand, they saw, they strip, they paint, they finish. They are creators. They are men.

4 August 28, 2016 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Four (Continued from page 3) Yet there s also this very real, childlike vulnerability to them. Doctors typically have steely, unshakeable temperaments. Lawyers are used to being questioned. Good writers don t take edits personally. But a carpenter is different. If you want to, you can absolutely destroy a carpenter simply by looking at the chair he s made and saying it stinks. Because that s part of him. In the contours of the wood, scribbled in sweat, is his signature. When he presents his work, it s as if he s holding up a finger painting: Mommy, look what I made! Don t you like it? They get this gleam in their eyes, this excitement in their voice, this giddiness at the thought of you liking their work. It s a beautiful vulnerability. When I think of this, I think of Joseph when he and Mary realized they had lost their 12-year-old son after going to Jerusalem on pilgrimage. In hindsight, we have a tendency to recall The Finding in the Temple with bemusement ( Oh, kids what can you do? ), but the reality was terrifying: Three days passed with Mary and Joseph not knowing if Jesus had been injured, abducted, or killed. Three days. As a father, I can t imagine what s going through Joseph s head then. Does he feel like Joseph, the brave carpenter of Nazareth, or Joseph, the vulnerable boy? He ducks into room after room, asking sheepishly, Have you seen my son? Other parents look at him with a frown, maybe a little condescending. They mumble among themselves when he leaves thank heaven we re not that irresponsible. He s probably thinking, some protector and provider I am. His vocation was to take care of Jesus with at least the same amount of care as creating a table. And he had failed. Joseph, the fearless carpenter of Nazareth, had failed. I think of Mary s face when she learned the news. Her face, so gentle and beautiful, must have had all the color flushed out of it, as if to say, No, no. Jesus, no. Joseph, do something. I saw that same look from my wife on that bright spring afternoon as I carried our limp daughter from her stroller to the grass. What sort of father am I? I ve been entrusted with this golden-haired baby, and what can I do? Veronica, come back. Veronica, listen to Daddy. Guardian angel, Blessed Mother, Jesus, Holy Family, Joseph! Do something. Joseph, do something. Because I can t do a thing right now. * * * * * Veronica came back. I don t know exactly how long it was maybe 10 seconds, maybe 45. Amid the prayers of our friends, her cheeks quickly turned rosy and she let out a faint whine and her eyes turned curious again. We d later learn that she d suffered a seizure prompted by a fever from an infection. Hindsight would tell us that it wasn t life-threatening we really had nothing to fear. Kind of like Joseph and Mary discovering at the end of their gut-wrenching ordeal that Jesus was fine all along just studying with the scribes. But somehow that s tough to believe when your son has been missing for days or your daughter is unconscious and turning blue before your eyes. No, as a father, our job means worrying. Are my children safe? Is my wife? Are we all fed? Are we raising them right? Are they making good friends? Is their faith growing? Is ours? As a father, you re supposed to be this pillar of great strength, the carpenter for your family. But from that position of strength there also comes this realization that you yourself are just a little boy, that you are running from room to room asking for help, that you yourself are really a baby in someone else s arms. We re not the real creators and protectors; we re instruments. And that s where Joseph comes in. He realized, whether from his table-saw or from the empty rooms in Jerusalem, that true strength as St. Paul says comes from weakness. It s only after recognizing how powerless you really are that you can become a bold, courageous, powerful instrument of God s plan. As a father, you learn, like Joseph, to take solace from knowing that, in the end, there is only one Father that can bring back the child you thought you d lost. This reflection was originally published at the Catholic Business Journal and is used here with permission.

9 August 28, 2016 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Nine The summer has been long and hot. Seems normal for Chicago, doesn t it? Well, even in these stressful times let us not forget those among us who struggle more than we. Our pantry, in spite of your great help, has seen better days. We are in need of many items: pasta, pasta sauce, canned vegetables, soups, fruit, potatoes, and so much more. Suffice it to say Old Mother Hubbard s cupboard is bare! Your support will be appreciated again. The St. Vincent de Paul Society has been active at Our Lady of Ransom parish for about 25 years, and we enjoy being a part of this active parish. You, the parishioners, by your contributions of foods, quarterly envelope collections, and other anonymous donations, have allowed us to work with and help many families in our area. We can do nothing without your generous assistance, and we are so very grateful. Some of our volunteers have been SVdP members since the beginning and cannot continue to be active in our ministry of help to the poor. We are looking to add new parishioners to our conference. Do you feel that you can be with us in our wok? Have you a desire to assist those in need? It can be a most rewarding experience when you find that you have helped someone in need. Interested??? Just call the Ministry Center and leave your name. We will be sure to contact you. Hope to hear from you.
