3 August 5, 2018 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three From the desk of the Pastor... Words of Saints This past Monday we celebrated the Memorial of St. Peter Chrysologus. He was a pivotal bishop who helped preserve the faith of the people in his region of Italy in the fifth century. His title, Chrysologus, means goldentongued so named because he had a great impact on those who heard him. Many of his homilies are still intact and most were very brief. During his homilies he would sometimes become so excited and animated that he would find himself at a loss for words. His simple and straightforward explanations of what we believe led the Church to declare him a Doctor of the Church. Here is an excerpt from one of his homilies: Listen to the Lord s appeal (from the Cross): You may run away from me as the Lord, but why not run to me as your father? Perhaps you are filled with shame... Do not be afraid. This cross inflicts a mortal injury, not on me, but on death. These nails no longer pain me, but only deepen your love for me. I do not cry out because of these wounds, but through them I draw you into my heart. My body was stretched on the cross as a symbol, not of how much I suffered, but of my all-embracing love. I count it no loss to shed my blood: it is the price I have paid for your ransom. Come, then, return to me and learn to know me as your father, who repays good for evil, love for injury, and boundless charity for piercing wounds. On Tuesday we celebrated the Memorial of the great St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits ). He often useed the phrase, Ad maiorem Dei gloriam a Latin expression for To the greater glory of God. His work, the Spiritual Exercises, is one of the great treasures of our faith tradition. His humility, simplicity, and arduous desire to always seek out the will of God continues to inspire. The following prayer is attributed to him: Take and receive, O Lord, all my liberty, all my memory, all my understanding, my whole will. All that I am, all that I possess, I have received from You, and I return to You, that you may dispose of it according to Your holy will. I ask only for Your love and Your grace.
