3 November 20, 2016 Our Lord Jesus Christ King of the Universe Page Three Today our Church celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe; on the final Sunday of the Liturgical year. The Solemnity of Christ the King is a newer feast in the Catholic Church. It was established by Pope Pius XI in The pontiff was witness to a turbulent time in the world s history. Secularism was on the rise and dangerous dictatorships were emerging in Europe and beyond. Christ had long been referred to as King, but Pope Pius and the Christian faithful saw the respect and reverence for Christ s authority waning in the midst of the unrest during the first part of the 20 th century. In response, Pius XI wished to affirm the "Kingly dignity of Christ" by remembering the words of the Nicene Creed, "and his Kingdom will have no end." The PPC is a group of faith-filled men and women who, through prayer and discernment, strive to implement the Parish's mission and its ministry, listen to the voices of the Parish community, create a unified vision and plan for the future of the Parish. Along with other parishes and Our Lady of Ransom Parish, we collected over 300 boxes of oatmeal. Quaker Oats Co. matched this number with an additional 300 boxes. for a total of over 600 boxes of oatmeal. Feed My Starving Children contributed 22 pallets of food. With your generous support 450 students will have nutritional breakfasts and lunches for the next 18 months. Many boxes of medical supplies, school supplies, and other food items were also collected. The need is always great -- please consider taking an ornament (or two). SNOWMAN names a girl/woman from St. Mary of Providence ANGEL names a child from St. Malachy or Precious Blood TREE names a homebound person of OLR No donations of cash or checks, please! Bring your wrapped gift with ornament attached during the weekend of December It is right to give HIM thanks and praise. Thanksgiving is upon us already and our St. Vincent de Paul Society will be packing up Thanksgiving Baskets on Tuesday November 22 to distribute to the needy families in our area for their holiday dinners. Please continue to be generous. We need turkeys, gravy, potatoes, canned veggies and fruit, and anything else you can donate to make the holiday special.
