Dear Parish Family, Please know of my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has expressed to me their feelings about the completion of my pastorate here at OLR this upcoming June and to those who took the time and effort to attend the parish town hall meeting this past Monday concerning future leadership. While I was not at the meeting, I have received some information about how things went and I understand there were some strong concerns about why this needs to happen to the parish and about how I feel about the process and about moving on. First, God bless you for being concerned about me. As I mentioned in my article two weeks ago, my main concern is about you and the future of OLR. I know that as difficult as it will be for me to leave OLR, I also know that I will be fine. I have known for some time that I would be called upon to move on at the completion of my second 6-year term as pastor. God has blessed me so abundantly with allowing me to serve here for nearly 15 years. I have no right to complain. Most importantly, I also know that OLR will be more than fine. The future is filled with hope because it is in God s hands and there s no better place to be. The prospect of receiving a new pastor who appreciates the blessing of our parish and can bring new focus and pastoral leadership is a wonderful thing. Still, change can be quite difficult, especially the older we get. It often involves a range of emotions including a sense of loss and of uncertainty, perhaps even fear of the unknown future. I invite all of us to be patient and allow God s grace to be present to us. For clarity sake, from what I have gathered about Monday s meeting, it seems that some mixed messages were being heard. Please let me be clear: I am not being forced out. In a sense I would, of course, love to stay. I do, however, understand and believe in term limits for pastors, in the process involved, and in the newness and hope it enables. It is healthy and best for the future of the parish and for me. I have great confidence and trust in the Priest Placement Board. The process for parishes and pastors is prayerful, thorough and discerning. I am confident that they will do their best to find the very best fit for OLR and for whatever parish to which I may be called to serve. To that end, if you would like to offer your input in writing, please feel free to respond in whole or in part to the following questions: 1) What are the top 3 strong points of the parish (3 best things about your parish)? 2) What are the 3 greatest challenges in the parish currently (areas of concern)? 3) What specific talents and skills are needed in the next pastor of your parish? 4) What effective existing programs are currently active in your parish that greatly contribute to your parish vitality and must continue? Our friends look forward to the many jackets, coats, sweaters, boots, gloves, scarves, etc. that we donate to them. We are also asking for clean warm blankets. Many of the needy guests live in shelters and are given one thin blanket. As the colder weather is here, please be thinking about helping those who are less fortunate. NOTE: Drivers are needed November 21 to bring the clothing to the school at 4641 N. Ashland in Chicago. You do not need to stay - just drop off the clothing at the lower level. Blessings!
