3 November 25, 2018 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Page Three From the desk of the Pastor... Thank You Queen of Peace Guild! This year s annual Holiday Craft and Bake Sale was tremendously successful due to the year-long efforts of the lovely ladies of our Queen of Peace Guild. This year marks their 46th anniversary as a parish organization. They began many years ago by offering plants for sale, then added baked goods the following year, then a hand crafted quilt, etc. Now Paluch Hall is filled each year with all kinds of Christmas gifts, wonderful gift baskets and raffle prizes. Thank you, Ladies, (and all the men who helped out) and Congratulations! We Need You... In celebrating the Sacred Liturgy, there are different liturgical ministries and roles that add to the fullness and dignity of the liturgy. We are grateful to all who make the commitment to serve in various capacities as Altar Servers, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers, and Music Ministers. It is a privilege to be able to do so and to offer our efforts and abilities as we celebrate the Mass. Ministry is always about serving the needs of others. We currently have a real need for more Eucharistic Ministers at all Masses and for more Ushers, especially at our 9:00am Sunday Mass. Please consider contributing in either of these ways (or any other way) and contact Fr. Matt or me after Mass or by calling the Ministry Center. Christ the King This Sunday we come to the final week of our liturgical year with our celebration of the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. As this Sunday s readings reveal, our Lord s Kingdom is not of this world, and yet he came to establish it in this world. Our mission as disciples of Christ is to bear witness to the truth of God s Kingdom here and now by authentically living our lives in communion with God and one another. We might ask ourselves whether our lives look different than the lives of others who do not profess to be disciples of Christ. Is it clear that we believe in and bear witness to a different way of life than the prevailing culture? In other words, is Christ our King in reality, or in name only? It is common at the end of the calendar year to make new year s resolutions. Perhaps we might take some time this week as we come to the end of the liturgical year to do the same, focusing our thoughts and aspirations concretely on how we might more fully bring to bear God s Kingdom in the new year. Thank You for Caring One of the many ways we bear witness to Christ the King is through our love and care for others in need. Thank you to all who served at Our Lady of Lourdes preparing and sharing a Thanksgiving meal with those in need and/or who donated winter clothing. Thanks, too, to the many who have donated food and prepared Thanksgiving Baskets that were distributed to the needy by our St. Vincent de Paul Society. Your generosity is wonderful and inspiring! Have a blessed week,

5 November 25, 2018 Our Lord, Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Page Five Solemnity of Christ the King (USCCB Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 with his encyclical Quas Primas ( In the first ) to respond to growing nationalism and secularism. He recognized these related societal ills would breed increasing hostility against the Church. His encyclical reminds the faithful that while governments and philosophies come and go, Christ reigns as king forever. Jesus is the center of creation; and so the attitude demanded of us as true believers is that of recognizing and accepting in our lives the centrality of Jesus Christ, in our thoughts, in our words and in our works. Homily of Pope Francis Solemnity of Christ the King November 24, 2013 The Kingdom Demands Discipleship We must work everyday with the help of the Holy Spirit, to draw closer to Jesus. In our own increasingly post-christian society, we cannot be complacent in our spiritual lives. To acknowledge the kingship of Christ means that we should dedicate ourselves to prayer, to building up our families and parish communities and to bringing healing to a broken world. The kingdom, already present and growing in our midst, engages us at every level of our being and reminds us of the principle of discernment which Pope Paul VI applies to true development: it must be directed to all men and the whole man. Pope Francis Evangelil Gaudium, 181 Our Lady of Ransom Scripture Study January February 2019: Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John by Dr. Edward Sri Following Christ takes more than simply believing in him or doing what he asks of us. Jesus wants you to be more than just a believer He wants you to be his disciple and friend. Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John is your guide to a personal encounter with Christ. As the Good Shepherd, Jesus seeks after us. He comes to meet us and beckons us to follow him. He calls us to be his disciples, to trust him, to open ourselves to his merciful love, and to love others as he has loved us. Follow Me invites you to experience the joy of a renewed friendship with Christ. Please call Cathy Williams at the Ministry Center ( ) or cwilliams@olransom.org for more information about our scripture studies.

The payment rate, which is based on the age of the donor when the policy is written, never fluctuates. Gift annuity rates have just increased, which makes them even more valuable.
