3 October 2, 2016 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three From the desk of the Pastor... Feast Day/Service Day Last Saturday, September 24th, we celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Ransom. We remembered the feast in our Sunday worship with prayers and hymns to our Patroness, but we also commemorated it in a special way with our Parish Service Day. Over 100 volunteers of all ages came together to offer their time and labor to help those in need and help care for our own parish grounds. Decked out in this and last years T-shirts, all assembled in church to begin the service projects in prayer and then set out to their various cites. After about 3 hours of work, we all returned to Paluch Hall to reflect on the varied experiences, attended 5pm Mass together, and then reassembled downstairs for some pizza and fellowship. A great team of volunteer landscapers (who got an early start) attacked the grounds weeding, hoeing, trenching, trimming. Within a few hours of hard work they had amassed 18 large black plastic bags full of debris cleared from our grounds. Two other teams set out to visit, sing with and play bingo with patients at Avantara and Presence Nursing Homes. Another team stayed here writing letters of care and hope to our service personnel/veterans. Another group went off to help organize and present for sale items to benefit persons with disabilities at Avenues for Independence. Another group headed out to Catholic Charities in Des Plaines armed with bread, meat, cheese, pears and all needed to prepare lunches for those in need. Here back at the parish many of our young people scraped and painted the fence and garage at the north breezeway as well as the ramp railing leading to the Ministry Center and the yellow safety curb. Some went around the grounds picking up garbage. Others cleaned, scoured and polished our parish hall kitchen. Even the brass church door handles and altar railings got polished. The common refrain of all involved is that it was a wonderful, worthwhile day that helped us, as one boy reflected to the group, to remember how fortunate we are and how important it is to help others in need. Many thanks to all who participated and, in a special way, to all who worked so hard organizing and making it happen including Chris Paolelli, Marilyn Kirschten, Deborah Bosco, John Dobbins and Angie Ruggero. Have a blessed week,

5 October 2, 2016 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Five COMING - QUEEN OF PEACE GUILD HOLIDAY CRAFT & BAKE SALE November 12-9:00am to 6:00pm November 13-8:30am to 2:00pm The call of the Holy Spirit to consider a vocation may sometimes be a gentle voice stirring the soul or a personal longing in our hearts. It may be the urging of a friend or spouse. It can also find birth in the invitation of pastors, deacons, and parish leaders to pursue such an inquiry. No matter the source of our questions, each of us needs to be affirmed and encouraged to bring a call to a vocation to prayerful discernment. Our first meeting of the new year began with a meaningful Mass where Father Chris stressed that we need to help all people here and all over the world, including some right in our area. A Bingo Bash was held with fun prizes! Tickets for the Four Winds casino trip were sold; and there are just a few seats left for this event on October 18th. In November Chef Jose of Sunset Grill will demonstrate four easy hors douvres to prepare for the coming holidays. And we will get to taste them! Dues remain at $10.00 Please consider joining us! Catholic Women s Club We have sought your assistance over the past so many years to keep our pantry to a level that we can offer food packages to the poor in our area that need our help, and you have been so generous in providing that help. We thank you greatly for that. But our assistance needs keep increasing because of the lack of job opportunities, mothers without husbands to support them and their children, and other dire situations that require our help. Our pantry is in such a state that we are in need of most items that we regularly inventory. This may sound like a broken record, but your help in donating canned foods of all types (veggies, soups, fruit, beans, etc.) and more is urgently needed. Thank you for understanding our needs, St. Vincent de Paul Society

This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing and monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God s Grace, The Women s Centers have saved over 40,000 babies - and their mothers from abortion since opening in Please take a Baby Bottle home with you this weekend, fill it with your spare change during the next few weeks, and return it the weekend of October This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women s Centers. Note that the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards, so please return upon completion of the project. Thank you for helping defend life, and remember to keep all pro-life undertakings in your prayers. Please remember to pray for the sanctity of life at all of its stages.
