Like many of you I watched recent news coverage that deeply saddened and sickened me. On the 46th Anniversary of the fateful Roe v. Wade decision that first legalized abortion, amidst a throng of cheers and applause and set against the backdrop NYC skyscrapers illuminated in pink to show support, Governor Cuomo signed into law the so-called Reproductive Health Act. It was a jubilee celebration guaranteeing the right of a woman to end her child s life up to the very moment of birth. There were warm, celebratory embraces for all, except, of course, for the babies whose death warrants were just signed. It isn t just the immoral legislation that is so abhorrent, it is the delight with which the new bill was received by legislators and abortion advocates. Even if one could argue, however errantly, that abortion should in some cases be justified, to celebrate with delight the killing of viable babies is inhuman and nothing short of demonic. Within a few days of the law s implementation, in the Commonwealth of Virginia, delegates to the state Legislature introduced a bill, subsequently tabled, that likewise proposed abortion up to the moment of birth. In a radio interview, Virginia Governor Northam, a physician, tried to defend the bill with what he apparently thought was a compassionate pledge that, should a child survive an abortion, the infant would be kept comfortable. [And] the infant would be resuscitated if that s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue. In the meantime, back home at the headquarters of Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the nation, our newly elected Governor Pritzker signed an executive order, also on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, ordering that state departments must include abortion procedures in their medical benefits. These indefensible actions mark a dark moment in the long, somber history of abortion in America. And, as some have pointed out, it is a new chapter in the abandonment of the Church s teachings by politicians who still call themselves Catholic. Fortunately there are some states that still seek to protect unborn children. Among them: Alabama has all but banned abortion in the state, and Louisiana, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia are following suit. In early February, Alabama petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold its law restricting dismemberment abortions. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota and Utah joined the petition. Many steadfast, wonderful, dedicated warriors continue to fight the good fight of defending human life at every stage. Please join me in praying for them and for a profound change of heart among civic leaders that they begin to promote a culture of life. Let us pray daily for an end to the scourge of legalized abortion that now includes infanticide. And may God have mercy on us. Have a blessed week,

ANGELA MERICI ( ) It is appropriate that this image of St. Angela includes a young girl with an open book, the symbol of the teacher. Orphaned at the age of 10, she spent her life teaching children, then teaching others to teach. She ultimately founded the Company of St. Ursula, or the Ursulines, which was the first teaching order of women in the church. Canonized in 1807; her feast is celebrated on January 27. ST. PETER The keys in his hands symbolize the keys to heaven that Jesus gave him. This is the Rock whom Jesus chose personally to lead His new church. First Pope, Leader, Missionary, Preacher, Teacher. All of these fit this man. His feast is celebrated on June 29. ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI ( ) This image includes such symbols as the cross he carried, a Bible which he used as the only guide for his life, and the robe he chose to wear instead of the fine clothes of his birthright, tied with a rope as his followers still do. He was described as a poor little man who astounded and inspired the Church by taking the gospel literally ; and he did it without rancor, without reservation and without question. He is the patron saint of animals and the ecology. His feast day is celebrated on October 4. ST. FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI ( ) Frances was born in Italy. She became Mother Cabrini when she made her vows and took the religious habit. She found the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Pope Leo XIII urged her to come to the United States where she established schools, orphanages and hospitals. She became a naturalized citizen in 1909; was the first US citizen canonized in 1946 as the patron saint of immigrants. Her feast day is celebrated on November 13. SACRED HEART OF JESUS When Jesus died on the cross his pierced heart became a sign of the completeness of his love for us, a love that compelled him to die for us and that prompted him to remain with us in the bread and wine of the Eucharist. In art the Sacred Heart is pierced, surmounted by a cross and encircled with thorns. Light radiates from it to show that it is a burning furnace of love. St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a sister in France, promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This year we celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart on June 28.
