3 April 10, 2016 Third Sunday of Easter Page Three Dear friends in Christ, Several months ago I was invited to join the college seminary faculty and work with young men who were taking the first concrete steps in discerning a call to serve God's Church as one of his priests. After much prayer and deliberation, I was open to the possibility, if it was how Archbishop Cupich determined I could best serve the people of God. The Archbishop approved and has appointed me to this new assignment, beginning July 1st. I will be switching my primary assignment, duties, and even living space (I will now be living at Loyola University with the seminarians), which opens up many exciting new horizons. As part of my new assignment, I will still be helping at parishes with Sunday masses. Fr. Chris has graciously offered for me to stay on at OLR as a Sunday celebrant. While this is not set in stone and all the details are not worked out, it is a great chance to continue to serve the community which I have grown to love. Please be assured of my prayers as I begin this new endeavor and I ask you to pray for me and for all those who are seeking to serve God with an openness of heart. God Bless, Fr. RELICS FROM OUR PAST or THE SAINTS AMONG US All of us have some possession or experience in our lives that evokes great value or sentiment. It could be a scarf, an old coat, a coin, a set of silverware, a tool, or a scenic location. Attaching great meaning to material items brings us close to the person or the event to which they are connected. They invoke in us a deep personal touch stone that transports us back to the origin of its use, who we were with, and how we enjoyed the experience. The Church understands that we are a relational people. We remember people, times and places by those touch stones in our lives. They are a kind of relic of the past making them present to us. The Church views RELICS as material objects that have a direct connection to Jesus or the saints. There are three levels or classes of RELICS. First Class Relics are actual body parts such as fragments of bone of a saint. Second Class Relics are items that the saint owned such as cloths, a belt, a ring, sandals, a book, or fragments of them. Third Class Relics are items that the saint touched or were, in turn, touched to a FIRST, SECOND, or THIRD Class RELIC. Relics of the saints are held to be of great value, worthy of veneration by the faithful. The Old Testament (Sirach 48: 13-14) records that a dead body came back to life when it was touched to the bones of the Prophet Elisha. The New Testament witnesses that a woman was healed from hemorrhaging when she touched the hem of Jesus garment, as well as many others who did (Mark 6:56). Christians in the early church were in awe and wonder of the Apostles. So great was their faith that they brought out their sick so that even the shadow of the Apostles might fall on them (Acts 5:12-15). St. Paul s secondary clothing, such as handkerchiefs and aprons were placed on the sick and they were healed and evil spirits fled from them (Acts 19:11-12). Mass, in the early Church, was originally said directly over the tombs of the Martyrs. The altar was usually the cover stone on top of the tomb. Mass was also said in homes and larger venues using wooden tables. The Latin Church preferred the use of a more durable material, a single natural stone, such as marble. The tradition of keeping a connection with a saint was preserved by having a relic placed and sealed underneath the table top (mensus). Today, wooden altars can be used outdoors but must have a movable consecrated flat stone with a saint s relic sealed underneath. Great care is taken to assure that relics are authentic and can actually be attributable to a saint. The main altar of a church is dedicated, consecrated, and given a title (titulus), usually the name of church that surrounds it. If a relic is known to exist from that saint then it will be procured if possible. Otherwise, currently two relics are required for each altar. Though unseen by us, the saints continue to be present in our worship, and in our Catholic Christian Community. Their witness encourages us to carry on the work of the Church. They gave their lives for Jesus. Their example calls each of us to do no less. The Communique is a monthly publication of Our Lady of Ransom Communications Committee. On Saturday, April 23, at Fairway Banquets located to 6700 West Howard Street in Niles (between Caldwell and Milwaukee) we will enjoy a family style meal with a cash bar available. We will be entertained by the musical group Cielito Lindo. Tickets at $40 per person are being sold after weekend Masses and at the Ministry Center. Big ticket raffle tickets are also available after all Masses. The tickets are $2 each and you can view the fabulous prizes! You do not need to be present to win! We are in need of big baskets and gift cards. Drop them off at the Ministry Center marked CWC this week. Get your tickets and bring your husbands, relatives and friends for a fun filled afternoon! 2017 Mass Book opens Wednesday, April 27 The opening date for the Mass Book for 2017 intentions will be Wednesday, April 27 at 9:00 a.m. in the Ministry Center. Unfortunately, we cannot accept advance bookings and checks. Any checks received before the opening date will be returned to sender. Intentions for the Mass are limited to one person and/ or spouse per Mass. Should there be more family names, they will be listed as Deceased Members of the Family. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. The Archdiocese allows 2 Masses per week to be multiple intention Masses. These will be celebrated each Tuesday and Saturday at 8:15a.m. There will be a limit to one Sunday Mass per calendar month (12 Sunday Masses per year.) There is no limit to weekday Masses.
