1 The Spirit Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord ~ April 9, 2017 Holy Week Jesus Washed His Disciples Feet on Holy Thursday Anonymous Italian Painter He took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. When he had washed their feet he said to them, "Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me 'teacher' and 'master,' and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do." John 13:4b-15

3 April 9, 2017 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Page Three From the desk of the Pastor... Truly a Holy Week As a Church we move this weekend into our observance of Holy Week. It is a blessed time to really engage ourselves more fully in the Paschal Mystery. I hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to clear away your schedule, creating some spiritual space to truly be present for these most sacred commemorations. We begin our observance on this Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion. We commemorate Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem to the praise and adulation of the crowds. We witness, however, that the picture quickly changes as Satan s hour arrives. On Holy Thursday, the night Jesus was betrayed, we gather at 7 pm and go to the Upper Room where our Lord gathered with his disciples and instituted the Holy Eucharist. We witness how Jesus tied the Eucharist inextricably to humble service -- washing the feet of others. We then spend some time praying and watching with him. Following the Mass, the church will remain open until Midnight to receive those who will visit the Eucharistic Lord at the Altar of Repose. Others of us will board buses on a pilgrimage of sorts to visit other churches to do the same. On Good Friday we gather in a barren church with an empty tabernacle to prayerfully accompany our Lord throughout his Passion. At noon our 8th graders will lead us in the Living Stations. At 3pm, Bishop Kane will preside at the principal celebration on Good Friday, the Liturgy of the Passion of the Lord. With a reading of the Passion, we will walk with Jesus through his agony in the Garden of Gethsemane and throughout his horrific suffering, death and burial. We will come forward to venerate the cross upon which he hung for us and to receive Holy Communion consecrated the night before. At 7pm we will gather again to celebrate the Stations of the Cross. On Holy Saturday night at 7:30 pm we process into a darkened church with the newly blessed Paschal Candle signifying the Light of Christ that is to emerge victorious from the tomb, conquering sin and death once and for all. We recall the history of our salvation and welcome a new member into the Body of Christ, the Church. And as with all of our holy liturgies on Easter Sunday morning, we celebrate Christ s victory with the joy and newness of life that the Resurrection brings when we live in Christ. We witness that God s love is greater even than death. I hope you will be with us this Holy Week to share in these most holiest of days. For as we share in Jesus death, so shall we share in his Resurrection. Have a blessed Holy Week,

Calling all Ladies of the Parish. Often in sacred scripture you will find that Jesus went out into the desert to pray to His heavenly Father, if Our Lord needed time away to pray certainly we need time away from our busy lives to pray too. For this reason we invite you to step away from all the demands of life and spend some time with Our Lord (and other women from OLR) on a Women s Ignatian Retreat at Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House, May 5-7. The grace you receive will benefit you & your family as well! Please call the Ministry Center for more information

We are looking for HAMS, YAMS, PINEAPPLE, CORN, BEANS, and any festive food items that you may want to include. Thank you for your generosity. Remember we will be packing the baskets on Wednesday, April 12. Thank you for your continued help! St. Vincent de Paul Society For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life. John 3:16 Prayer to Jesus Crucified Here I am, good and gentle Jesus, kneeling before you. With great fervor I pray and ask you to instill in me genuine convictions of faith, hope and love, with true sorrow for my sins and a firm resolve to amend them. While I contemplate your five wounds with great love and compassion, I remember the words which the prophet David long ago put on your lips: "They have pierced my hands and my feet, I can count all my bones." Psalm 22/17-18.
